I was genuinely surprised that they didn't do something 'different' from what had become a fairly rigid set; a thundering Pyjamarama, Thrill of it All, Amazona, Sentimental Fool or even Cry, Cry, Cry!!! In fairness I have to say that I was 'surprised' when Yanick suddenly appeared at Manchester last Friday as I'd forgotten she was coming over!. As for the 'others' well, best laid plans and all that, and as they had no management (?) there were bound to be hiccoughs, not everything was going to run perfectly was is, as we saw with the front row ticket/camera fiasco? I certainly didn't feel let-down big-time or heaven forbid 'conned', just momentarily disappointed. Maybe I'm a touch blinkered/naove when it comes to Roxy/Ferry, but as far as I'm concerned I've never had any reason to question their integrity. We stood shell-shocked for about 45 minutes outside the Apollo and took photos with the neon 'Roxy Music' insignia and giant posters as the back-drop. There were a number of people waiting to catch a glimpse/word with the band etc.. I think I missed Andy and Chris's departure. After a while Bryan came out in a People Carrier and signed a few autographs through the window and chatted with fans. He was in good spirits, laughing and joking. I managed to get a quick masonic handshake and then he was gone. As legend would have it, a bevy of beautiful Women were crammed into the back seat - possibly the dancers? All this was being filmed so I would suspect we'll get more than just the stage stuff on the DVD. I then noticed Zev who had earlier fleetingly appeared at the front of the theatre looking for friends/family. He was very relaxed chatting and signing autographs etc. He said he was returning to New York in the near future and was trying to get his web-site up and running soon. A thoroughly nice Guy who must have been through a difficult time recently. Hopefully he'll be back with Bryan. There was little else to hang around the Apollo for after that, so those who remained retired to the warmth and peanuts of the Novotel and enjoyed further conversation and camaraderie. I look forward to meeting as many of you as possible again soon, hopefully in May 2002 at the rumoured Ferry shows to promote his new album, if not before.. As far as Roxy are concerned, looking back, it now seems an amazingly short, crazy, wonderful 29 years since I first heard Virginia Plain, with about 10 or part thereof of those 'on the road'. I've had the sheer exhilaration and ecstasy of seeing the greatest band ever conceived about 20 times on every tour since '72. This last tour seems to have been the best but Oh I don't know, I can't honestly remember, it's all relative, how could it be better than when as a mere 14 yr old I saw then for the first time in that great big City so far away, Birmingham? Unfinished business has been well and truly put to rest. Our memories will live on for as long as the relevant brain cells function and the recorded legacy will always be there at the touch of a button, but it was evident on Tuesday - at least to me - that it's now time to move on and look to the future. I look forward to getting my hands on that 'Rock' album......one step at a time eh! TA-RAAAAAAAAAAAAA (extended version of course!) I know you folks can indulge me a little. Tuesday night at 8.50pm I was sitting looking at the clock in my front room and wondering why the hell I hadnt blown some more dosh and gone to Hammersmith, and I get to thinking .. what has all this meant to me? Its been odd. As someone who narrowly missed Roxy first time around (got properly into them about 83/84) outside of my family (the indoctrinating brothers) I was a bit isolated in my Roxy appreciation. This aint great when as a bullied, bookish, acne-ridden 14 year old female youre pretty easily isolated anyway. Roxy was all too difficult to explain anyway, you either got it or you didnt. Anyway, there I was ensconced in my own wee world, in my own wee room, utterly captivated by the cover of For Your Pleasure. Dear God, the sheer glamour of it was just too much. Was there ever a creature as threateningly chic as Amanda Lear and was there ever a more heavenly vision than BF in a chauffeurs outfit? This album embodied the perfection of darkness of the soul. It did so with a stiletto and a backward glance. It was great but it was pretty far away from gawky reality. There was the odd moment of lightness. The fellow pupil who used to do Bryan Ferry impersonations in O grade chemistry to cheer me up, and the fellow student who serenaded me with the end of SFE in a dismal advice centre during a university placement, being particularly memorable occasions. Another was the playing of AIWIY which made me happy no matter what. So the years come and go. Things change a lot, leave school, uni comes and goes and so to the world of work where I am now. Chug chug chug. Skin abates (only more or less, damn), bullying ends with me giving at least two boys a good hiding (I may be slight but Im bloody wiry and I get VERY angry), bookishness hasnt really ended I suppose but at least I now get paid for that bit. Things move on and I only occasionally think of Roxy Music, although when I do, it provokes an emotional flip for me. The what happens? I go to see BF on ATGB never having seen him before (I know, I know) and its FAB! I find the Avalon mailing list and its amazing like being a teenager with money to go and do what I want i.e. see BF on tour. I can also get admission to events like AMA2 and meet other disciples who don't need to be explained to - they get it. FANTASTIC! Then what happens? ROXY REFORM! My God! Can this be so? Indeed it can. So I chug around the UK, Europe and the US to see a band who got me through adolescence. I owe them money for that. And each time I hear a particular song or note or line I am flashed back to my teenage room and my little mitts clutching album covers, busy creating images for songs (few videos available). But Im not her any more even though I still feel what she felt when she hears this material. So when I said as I did to two Avalonians "Im in the front row in Madison Square Garden in New York and onstage is Roxy Music, does life get any better than this?" I can say no it doesnt. And to that awkward and unsure girl in Glasgow in 1983 I can say "Heres lookin at you kid you made it". Hurrah! And i think i do still need a pinch! i got my pictures back today, hopefully i can scan them and John can put them on his site or something. i got a few good ones, the one of bryan passing me back my pen (believe me i cant hardly recall anything that was said!) also after my 'main' meeting with bryan i walked around the side of the building to see if my friend was ok and bryan was there, with mobile phone to ear in one hand and glass of red wine in other. i asked if i could get a pic and he was very obliging, but from the looks of this photo someone had slipped a few squeezes of lemon juice into his wine! zev was also very nice and got a good pic, he should get his site sorted out. i also met up with others that i hadn't seen since rotterdam, such as reecey and chris turner and unfortunately i think it maybe longer till we do again as the tour has finished. but it has been brilliant. well, ive just got back from france and im so tired. ktx Return-Path: Received: from rly-ye03.mx.aol.com (rly-ye03.mail.aol.com [172.18.151.200]) by air-ye02.mail.aol.com (v81.8) with ESMTP id MAILINYE23-1004094237; Thu, 04 Oct 2001 09:42:37 -0400 Received: from smoe.org (jane.smoe.org [66.89.201.78]) by rly-ye03.mx.aol.com (v80.21) with ESMTP id MAILRELAYINYE39-1004093807; Thu, 04 Oct 2001 09:38:07 -0400 Received: from smoe.org (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by smoe.org (8.12.0.Beta16/8.12.0.Beta16) with ESMTP id f94DbCv1025580; Thu, 4 Oct 2001 09:37:13 -0400 (EDT) Received: from localhost (daemon@localhost) by smoe.org (8.12.0.Beta16/8.12.0.Beta16/submit) with SMTP id f94Db9T9025575; Thu, 4 Oct 2001 09:37:09 -0400 (EDT) Received: by smoe.org (bulk_mailer v1.10); Thu, 4 Oct 2001 09:36:44 -0400 Received: from smoe.org (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by smoe.org (8.12.0.Beta16/8.12.0.Beta16) with ESMTP id f94Dagv1025538 for ; Thu, 4 Oct 2001 09:36:42 -0400 (EDT) Received: (from majordom@localhost) by smoe.org (8.12.0.Beta16/8.12.0.Beta16/submit) id f94DagB3025537 for avalon-outgoing; Thu, 4 Oct 2001 09:36:42 -0400 (EDT) Received: from imo-m03.mx.aol.com (imo-m03.mx.aol.com [64.12.136.6]) by smoe.org (8.12.0.Beta16/8.12.0.Beta16) with ESMTP id f94Dabv1025529 for ; Thu, 4 Oct 2001 09:36:38 -0400 (EDT) Received: from KarenASwenson@aol.com by imo-m03.mx.aol.com (mail_out_v31_r1.7.) id p.15c.200a313 (4441) for ; Thu, 4 Oct 2001 09:36:26 -0400 (EDT) From: KarenASwenson@aol.com Message-ID: <15c.200a313.28edbfd9@aol.com> Date: Thu, 4 Oct 2001 09:36:25 EDT Subject: [AVALON] The girl with the puppydog eyes To: avalon@smoe.org MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="US-ASCII" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Mailer: AOL 5.0 for Mac sub 30 Sender: owner-avalon@smoe.org Reply-To: avalon@smoe.org Precedence: bulk Anyone know if our young friend Katie made it to I think the first night in Hammersmith? Hi Avalonians! Just got back from tuesday show. This was my 3rd show. (London-Copenhagen-London). Just want to thank Alan for getting the ticket. Couldn't think of a better seat. Much action on the right side of the stage and the camera was not at all in the way. All the ladies on the right side sure got a lot of attention. And the postertrick at the end of the show will hopefully be on the DVD. Also thanks to O'brien, Bryan from Wales and Cris and Steve who joined later. All of you were a pleasure to meet. My knowledge of RM and BF has tripled. And thanks to Caroline from Paris for a nice chat before and afterwards the show. What a great night it was. Impossible to pick a highlight. Perhaps the BF u-pants? Now I'm looking forward to the DVD. And the spring 2002 Ferry Tour? Hopefully RM will do another tour. They all looked very happy and enjoyed it as much as the crowd.
