I'm so tired. It's the day after the 4 months before. A roller coaster. It's hard to reconcile all that's happened since that first Gig in Dublin, but I'll have a go. Some 18 Roxy concerts for me later, and a great deal of it is, not surprisingly, a bit of a blur. Firstly though, last night. Things were different. Members of this list would not, nay, NOT, let things slip by without a last party. All 'up' from the start, the crowd were light years from the usual tepid London brigade of the night before. Screaming, shouting, chanting. That's more like it. And - the usual wonderful sight - glancing along the front row, either side of me, all I could see were all the friends from this list, met over the past couple of years. This was OUR gig, and OUR Band were playing. Way, way back when, we used to go to Roxy gigs. But recently, we've attended Roxy 'social events', all over the world, of which the concert itself is but one part. This sort of social whirl began with the ATGB solo tour, and so many of us have never looked back. Very pleased that Mother Of Pearl was back in last night, but in all honesty, none of us really expected 'extras'. In my own little extras dreamworld, I'd have had the Sadistic Mika Band as support. Then, Eno would have come on for a couple of numbers near the end of the gig and 'noodled' on the synths. As Colin Good was so efficient in tracing the original equipment, he would also have traced the original peacock jacket for Mr. Eno too, naturally. Jobson would have made an appearance too, on violin for Street Life, meaning Lucy W. would have been able to join us in the front row briefly, to lead us through her manic dance steps. Then 'Out Of The Blue' ? It's gotta be Lucy... Can I ask for just one extra track ? Ok then, 'Beauty Queen', please. Back in the real world, for many of us it was 4 gigs in 5 nights, which began with our second visit to Manchester, last Friday. The following night, Glasgow, is a gig I'll never forget. Amazing. But, back to last night. Into the early hours, a merry band of us tucked away in a Hammersmith hotel, drinking, reminiscing, coming to terms with it all. Scots, English, Dutch, American - exactly what I was referring to earlier. My god, we get everywhere. Give us a Roxy music gig anywhere in the world, we present ourselves. Special thanks to all who made it an amazing time since June - too many of you to mention, but you all know who you are. Best gigs I saw ? That's a tricky one - but Glasgow 2nd one was the one most special to me. Rotterdam and New York are up there too. In the middle of all the madness of the past few months, I had a month long holiday in the USA, my first proper 'holiday' for 10 years. I guess it was only right that Roxy were a large part of it. I would also like to personally thank a company called MBNA, for if they hadn't granted me a new business credit card in the early days of June, I wouldn't have been able to do even a quarter of this madness. Approx 5000 quid on the dreaded piece of plastic later, let me tell you somethin'... It was worth every damn penny, pound, cent, dollar, belgian franc, punt, guilder. I'd do it all again. It didn't hit me until I got into the taxi, leaving Hammersmith, to head home, about 4am this morning. That was it. It's over. It was quite shattering. It was hard to say goodbye to everyone, all leaving for different homes, in different countries. When I reached home, I should have just collapsed in a weary heap, but I couldn't damn well sleep. Too many memories of the last few months still bouncing around my head. And I think they'll be there for a very, very long time. So, is that really it ? Do we know the meaning of goodbye ? Next time is the best time ? See y'all next year, Tara, Reecey... Listen to your Yahoo! It was going to be my last opportunity probably and didn't want to miss out. Manchester 2 and Hammersmith 1 were my chosen ports of call. And how Roxy had improved during their travels. I was a bit puzzled by the Apollo audience who remained in their seats until Both Ends Burning. By contrast the Manchester crowd was great, up from the first note. At B'ham first time around, the band blew me away with the choice of songs and the sheer strength of their performance. At Manchester and the Apollo, the musical unit was on peak form. Old and new songs were performed with a stylistic consistency missing from earlier shows. The musicians seemed to have blended perfectly while they were away from these shores. Even Avalon, a song difficult to translate live, retained the smoothness of the original at Manchester. Heart Still Beating has grown in stature, while Dance Away, My Only Love, Oh Yeah and Jealous Guy all had an added muscularity absent from the album > versions - something to do with TGPT no doubt. The pre-Manifesto songs had a new depth, a more sophisticated and thicker sound. This was due to the standard of the support musicians as well as the quality of performance from Mackay, Manzanera, Ferry and Thompson. Out of The Blue was a highlight at all three concerts I went to. Lucy was superb each time, with her grin lighting up the crowd almost as much as her violin. Zev Katz is a great bass player and thankfully didn't overdo the usual histrionics. Julia Thornton and Sarah Brown would have been missed if they hadn't been there while Chris Spedding proved the perfect foil for Phil. On the second leg Andy Mackay and Phil Manzanera had clearly benefited from the worldwide trek. I was particularly impressed with Andy at Manchester and the Apollo. His subtlety was evident throughout and when needed drove the material along with youthful enthusiasm. Tara was superb - a favourite each night. Manzo obviously enjoyed having Spedding on board and it showed in his playing As for Ferry, I was delighted he played the piano quite a bit - a move which emphasised the 'Roxyness' of it all. Thanks for doing that. What really made it for me at the second two shows was that they looked as though they were having fun rather than just playing the songs. They had added details, flourishes and subtelties to each song to bring their catalogue to life. For me the highlight of the shows was Remake/Remodel - a song which for me captures the very essence of what we know as Roxy Music. I'm so sad its all over but thanks boys and girls for three great shows.....here's hoping........ From TOTP in May to the Apollo in October, & various places in between. Last night for me was the peak, not for any musical reasons but for the occasion, the last time I will EVER see Roxy, & to top it all I actually shook Ferry's hand for the first time. I tried to say "great show Bryan" but it came out as "htjhfjgfuyru jhgfkuy jhfjuh"! It was nice to meet some old & new friends, I even purchased a classic Ed Byrnes EP from Reeceys shop, & I had lunch with Mike Sarne , which as name-dropping goes, will not mean a thing to 99% of you.It was as the song says a perfect day......... Here's to the next four month holiday.. And, after the high of the last few days, the following encounter brought me down to earth with a bump. As one of the "4 concerts in 5 nighters", I arrived home from work this evening to realise that basic provisions such as milk and bread were in urgent need of replenishing. So, I have just been round to the local corner shop. No sooner had I entered the door than the strains of "Dance Away" started up from the radio behind the counter - what a coincidence I thought (well, how often do you hear Roxy on the radio?). Naturally a big grin spread across my face and before I could stop myself I was humming along (taking up where I left off last night - although rather more quietly!). I headed for the counter to pay (probably by now having been branded as the village idiot) and the girl on duty was also singing along. The following conversation ensued... Shopgirl: "It's good this isn't it?" Me: "Yes - actually, I saw them live last night" Shopgirl: "Oh - remind me again, who is it?" Me: "Roxy Music" Shopgirl: "Oh, are they still going?" Me: "Yes"..... ..... and then it hit me. They are no longer "still going" are they ? Last night was the end. The strange feeling that had been surrounding me all day gave way to a dawning realisation that, if all is to be believed, I will almost certainly never see Roxy perform live again . I am now listening to "Kiss the Past Goodnight" and admit that during "Song for Europe" the tears started! I know many of you are feeling the same today. What a show (I can't decide between Glasgow on Saturday and Hammersmith last night!). What a tour! It's been great meeting old and new friends again. And, as I said in June, thank you Roxy Music, you've done us proud. Someone in a review on Amazon.com remarks that he must have used a body double, or not inhaled, for his videos, judging by his voice and energy level at his advanced age! ;-) Optimistically, Karen _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 3 Oct 2001 17:49:15 -0700 From: "PeteK" Subject: [AVALON] Good Rockin' Tonight ? It seems Good Rockin' Tonight tribute has been pushed back to Oct 30th, according to cdnow.com The L.A. Daily news said it was released on Oct 2nd. Probably an old source. Another web site said Oct 16th. One of our avalonians once said the 18th. Somebody has to be right. Bryan's version of Elvis's "Dont Be Cruel" is on this release. Chris Turner has provided info on this in the past. Any help would be appreciated. Now that the party is over. Running out of time. ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 27 Sep 2001 11:50:58 +0100 From: "Chris Turner" Subject: Re: [AVALON] Good Rockin' Tonight ? Hi Pete, I was told formally by the distributors that it was the 16th, put back from the 2nd, but I wouldn't be surprised at another delay. This has been a very complex eighteen-month plus project with lots of star names to accommodate, and a corresponding documentary to film. They have also had unexpected problems such as the Ben Folds Five, er, folding, and their track having to be pulled. At least BF's part is finished, having been laid down over a year ago. Release can't be too far away though, as I saw a promo copy on eBay three weeks ago (I didn't win), and the documentary is slated for US PBS broadcast on the 28th November I believe. I've tried to get more info, but Middlefork won't answer my mails. She was featured guest singer with (and support for) Afro Celt Sound System on Tuesday. But I can find nothing on the web, other than mentions that she sings one track on the ACSS CD3. Some sites (in foreign languages) list her full name as Pina Kollars, but then one site says she is Austrian and I'm pretty sure she's Irish. So are these even the same person? Normally someone here knows something... Only link with Roxy is they played both London on Tuesday, a couple of miles apart, so apologies for the off-list topic. Although you could try the Kevin Bacon approach - two members of ACSS produced an album by Baaba Maal who featured a Brian Eno cameo on an album in 1998 and he once was a member of... If anyone wonders why I'm so suddenly interested in all things afro celt, the Tuesday gig was webcast and is available still at www.afrocelts.com Now why couldn't Roxy organise something like that?
