That's around $50 per week more I'll have to spend on Ferryphernalia, or other fun stuff for my family. Is Bry still puffing? Someone in a review on Amazon.com remarks that he must have used a body double, or not inhaled, for his videos, judging by his voice and energy level at his advanced age! ;-) Optimistically, Karen _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 3 Oct 2001 09:45:29 +0100 From: Rosalind Bull Subject: RE: [AVALON] The morning after the night before ... I'm sure I'm not the only one who woke up this morning to a feeling like someone has hit me in the stomach with a hammer - it's all over. There was such a good vibe amongst the audience, all talking to each other despite being complete strangers very often. I think Andy even got to sit in his original seat after all, so lots of happy people. I won't go on because there will be far more lucid accounts than I could ever attempt. Just to say that my most abiding memory will be during Jealous Guy (I know, sorry) I was gazing up at Bryan who was 10 feet away from my eyes but infitnitely far from me in every other respect, and I turned to look at Andy who I realised was watching me and who gave me a quick smile as if to say "Never mind, eh". It's time to return to lurker status. I just want to say a big thank you to every one I've met over the summer, particularly Carol and Anne, and of course, my knight in shining armour, SimonG. It's been great being a sixteen year old Roxy tart again for the summer. Thank you Roxy Music. Fantastic, met the lovely Rosalind, Jane, Rick.......and more and of course the normal suspects who will review better than me... Chris, John, Jocelyn, Martin.... Quick notes..... Fantastic, got right at the front...everyone on their feet all through, got MOP...... No ENO, all the band seemd to love it. Brian May and Anita Dobson were next to me in my official seats and standing in front of me during most of the concert taking a few pictures was one lanky, spotty, Ferry offspring (Isaac is it, about 17?). I noticed he clapped a bit, mouthed a lot of the words but did not really know them. He did burst out laughing when everyone screamed "Virginia Plain" and laughed at his dad's glee at the audience reaction at the end of "Do the Strand" and the "Roxy, Roxy" chanting. Oh yes, and I got a Roxy, Phil Manzanera monogrammed plectrum - what should I do with it? How would you wear it ? :) xx Andy ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 3 Oct 2001 10:45:22 +0100 From: "terrypaulrigz8c" Subject: Re: [AVALON] Last night - Andy Langley - ----- Original Message ----- From: > Oh yes, and I got a Roxy, Phil Manzanera monogrammed plectrum - what should I do with it? I was going to offer it for sale for 5000 pounds then go for a fab holiday to recover from my Roxy fuelled summer, but now I know there are 2 of them I suppose I will only get 50p, oh well:( The morning after the ultimate night, time to be 42 again, oh dear. It's a hard life in front of the cameras you know... ;-) ...and like we needed encouragement last night (duh), but the chap beforehand who came on to give the health and safety tips gave the Apollo the reassurance it needed - GET UP AND GET DOWN!!! Which of course myself and Rosalind did almost immediately South Downs piped up, but were told off by a cameraman! Never mind, down the front for Re-Make/Re-Model and stayed there for the duration. I actually thought Monday nights performance was better than last night, but the band interaction and stage craft was better last night (for the cameras no doubt). And the audience? Absolutely no comparison between Monday's dead fishes and last nights joyous riot! Lots of Roxy chanting, lots of singing along and clapping (which means sore throats and swelled hands today). Andy was on great form, moving a lot AND smiling at the same time, and Paul was of course the heart and soul. Ladytron was more powerful than a herd of stampeding buffaloes! Special mention must go to Bryan's pants (the underwear variety) which were on display for us all to see during the encore. Big white ones, sticking right out the back of his trousers. So our last, lingering memory of Bryan's exit (oo-er) was his big old Y-fronts. Nice. At the end of it all grown men were seen crying (not at the pants). But there was one final highlight to come... ...Brian May (in clogs) and "the lovely" (TM) Anita Dobson were in attendance (as already reported), but after the show, after loitering outside the Apollo in the cold for too long and for no good reason, I began the journey home. As I headed for the tube station I caught sight of Brian and Anita, coming out of a chip shop, sharing a bag of chips. Classic! So, no extras (other than a slightly rejigged MOP), but in the end it didn't really matter. Did it? Ta-ra. I've already written this e-mail once, only for it to disappear on sending (boo-hoo), so one more time, my observations in no particular order: WHY did they need to move so many people for the camera position? From my circle seat viewpoint, it was just a guy with a shoulder-held camera. They could have removed people from two seats and those behind could have stood (as I am sure most forward seated fans wanted anyway). Furthermore, upstairs there were HUNDREDS (I do not exaggerate), HUNDREDS of seats unsold in whole blocks. Why not put the camera in the middle of one of those and fit a zoom lens? To cut Street Life and lose the immortal words "Education Is An Important Key" is inexcusable but why oh why oh why leave those lines out on a date when they are filming for posterity? The set was the shortest yet and seemed to have got even faster in tempo than back in June when people were already detecting unseemly haste to get the show done and go home and count money. If people pay 50 pounds, can't the guys in the band play the songs at the right speed and feel the glow of a great performance rather than count the seconds until they can leave the stage? Lucy tried to dance along to some songs and looked like some aerobics victim rather than someone having a good time, just keeping up with the tempo. "No pain, no gain...feel that burn!" The crowd were as previously described by others, apathetic at best. If you heard the roar of 'Virginia Plain' from the circle (at the appropriate moment), that was me. Upstairs, I had the odd experience of seeing all three rows in front of me jump in unison with fright. No-one seemed to know any of the words and when dancing eventually commenced, it was an apathetic sway from side to side. I do not have any idea what Manzo meant by 'extras', but it would appear to mean Yannick Etienne. I'm glad to have heard her sing on Avalon, but it wasn't worth the extra 20 pounds. I am glad not to have missed Eno jamming on the encore, but I would have wished everyone who paid money for the last night to have had that memory to go home with. But I think we all knew all along the extra money was only to guarantee Roxy members the same fee for playing with less than half the number of punters. I know, it sounds like I didn't enjoy the show. But I did. Enormously. And not just because I got to meet Simon Galloway (for the first time), Ivor (who I did not mean to slight) and Reecey. I just know (from Wembley in June) and in my heart that they are capable of so much better. The Afro Celt Sound System, by the way, were staggeringly great. They played for 2hrs 20 mins, I didn't know any of the material and it was brilliant. Video screen was well used (much more so than Roxy's), minimal stage area for band musicians, providing space for dancers and virtuoso performances (by featured singers and musicians from almost every ethnicity you can name), fire eaters, etc... Even though I knew what was happening two miles away, there was so much joy and commitment in the ACSS performances, I didn't think of Roxy once... I can dig up the article if you're interested. Their CDs are also great, but the concert was something else. Highly recommended.
