Regards Andy Langley MILAN REVIEW There wasn't a deluge of people for Roxy Music yesterday at [venue name], the only Italian gig, which completes a long world tour begun 9 June in Dublin. Around 2500 attended, less than expected, for the band, which has re-formed after 20 years. The narrow stalls were composed of 40-somethings and 50-somethings and young listeners, who applauded one of the most important rock reunions: Brian Ferry, a warm voice, especially, Phil M, a virtuoso guitarist like few others, and a woodwind-player (? horn? vocals?) like Andy MacKay. That's the core of the revived Roxy Music, with the addition of experienced percussionist Paul T., guitarist Chris S. (not me!), and three other musicians and two backing vocalists (female). It's pure nostalgia: opening with the first track of the first album from '72, and most of the show is given over to the first two albums of their career, closing with 'Virginia Plane'. The set and the clothes nodded towards 70s glam-rock, from Bryan Ferry's black leather jacket (later replaced by a silver one), to the dark red lights which lit the curtains. The songs chosen got varying reactions: some songs, very favoured by radio programmes specialising in revival, were applauded, while other older songs long available only on vinyl proved for some to be delightful discoveries. The most refined last night noticed that the gig lacked a fundamental element of the original Roxy Music, that is, the contrast between the creative strangeness and nervous energy of Brian Eno and the vocal serenity of Ferry, which transformed the whole thing (originally) into a horseback-hybrid (uh??) between tradition and future. The keyboardist did a good job of mimicking Brian Eno's doings (only a rough translation here), with Ferry intense, strings and vocals fused together, sax and organ in a song which, like many others, although seeming from another era, hasn't lost its ability to surprise. So, summing up, an evening dominated by the triumph of the old rock spectacle, born of the optimism of the long seventies. Like rereading, after many years, a favourite book. Without any pretence of making anything new, of presenting any new repertoire, with carefree moments like 'Both Ends Burning', and loads of dancing girls. But this time, in contrast to what's happened up to now, the old lions have betrayed (?) the box-office. Maybe because, for all their greatness and splendour, Roxy Music have never been a band for the masses. ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 26 Sep 2001 10:08:18 +0100 From: "Simon Galloway" Subject: Re: [AVALON] Manchester meet A suggestion has been made, and I have to trust those who know Manchester as I don't! Well, that's > what she said! Simon - you're right - the Tap is the pub that adjoins Boddingtons Brewery (confirmed by Tourist info). I would guess that it would take approx 5 mins to walk from "The Tap" to one of the entrance doors of the Arena. "The Tap" is on the opposite side of the Arena to Victoria Railway Station and is in the Direction of Cheetam Hill/Bury. Basically - Boddingtons Brewery has a huge chimmney so if people head towards that they should find it. From what I know of this pub, I don't think it has any dress restrictions so it's "All styles served here" Hope this helps Aleks ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 26 Sep 2001 13:37:18 +0100 From: "Dave Taylor" Subject: Re: [AVALON] Where to stay in Manchester Hi Pauline, I've just reserved at the Renaissance for wifey and myself.
