And Jim Ivers (and another Jim whose last name escapes me), Pasi, and Pim, too. I think there was one other woman too? I also thought for a long time that William was there before me, but I have come to accept he is right about that issue. We're up to about 500 members--a far cry from that band of 30. What on earth did we manage to talk about back then? I do remember being completely intimidated by the knowledge of the folks who were there with me (although everyone was extremely nice to me in my ignorance), and my impression of myself is that I was relatively quiet back then. As far as I can see the punchline is an attendance of only 2500! Dell.unico failure Italian concert: only in 2,500 yesterday to Assago for the band of Bryan Ferry Roxy Music, fan disertano the return of the group MILAN - c.h be onslaught of public for the Roxy Music yesterday to the Filaforum di nell.unico Assago Italian concert, that it arrives in tail to along tour world-wide, begun the 9 june to Dublino: approximately 2,500 spectators, under whichever forecast, for the band that it has been found again after 20 years. The narrow platea was composed from quaranta-cinquantenni and young connoisseurs. That they have assisted plaudenti to one of the more important res-unification of the rock: Bryan Ferry, one warm, special voice, Phil Manzanera, a vituous chitarrista like little, a suonatore of breaths like Andy MacKay. Here firm the redivivi hard hoof of the Roxy Music, placed side by side from a drummer of experience like Paul Thompson, a added chitarrista of great experience, Chris Spedding, others three musicians and two coriste. L.operazione is of pure nostalgia: it is opened in fact with the first trace of the first album published in the 72, " initial Re-Make/Re-model " and all the show it privileges the two album of the career, is worth to say " Roxy Music " who contained the single " Virginia executed Plain " in closing. Also the scenografia and the dresses wink to the glam-rock of the Seventy, to begin from the jacket of black skin Bryan Ferry (then replaced from one silverplated), to the lights red-torbid that rischiarano drape of the theater box. The proposed repertorio sortisce various effects: brani like " Avalon ", " Love Is the Drug " and the famous " Jealous Guy " of Lennon (Ferry and Manzanera indeed triggered in a synergy total with the band), a lot cultivated from the specialized wireless programs in revival, come applauded, while others, plus " antichi ", available in order much single time on vinile like " Remake/Remodel ", " Both Ends Burning ", " In Every Dream Home ", " Heartache ", are for some discovered pleasant solos. The most refined evening yesterday they have eccepito that a fundamental element of music of the Roxy Music of the origins lacked in the concert, is worth to say the contrast between the creative stranezze and the nervous energy of Brian Eno and the serene vocalit` of Ferry, that it transformed all in a hybrid to horse between tradition and future. In compensation much rigorous a sonorous reconstruction with Colin Gold to the keyboard that the same old sintetizzatore of Eno used, one technical total indeed only, and l.impatto, remaining substantially invariato, of brani which " To Song for Europe " with an intense Ferry, arches and fused voice, with sax and organ in a song that, like many others, also seeming of an other century, has not lost the ability to be strange. Between the brani, " Streetlife ", " Ladytron " (ipnotica, with old the laser greens), " My only love ", " Oh yeah ", " Tare " (with a wonderful crossing between sax and violino), " Dance Away " (with those riff electrical workers whom they sent in visibilio the platee), " Editions of you ", dragging glad and. Insomma, has been one evening dominated from the triumph of the old rock-show, long son born dell.ottimismo dall.onda of the Sixty. Like rileggere after many years a beautiful book. Without the pretension of rifondare null, some new repertorio to place in the storees, with spensierati moments like " Both Ends Burning " with a lot of dancers. But stavolta, in controtendenza with happened how much till now, the old lions have betrayed the botteghino. Perhaps because, also in their maximum splendor, Italy the Roxy Music never has not been one band for the masses. - ----- Original Message ----- From: To: Sent: Tuesday, September 25, 2001 10:37 PM Subject: [AVALON] the MILAN GIG in the newspapers > a rather sad article (in italian) > > http://www.corriere.it/edicola/index.jsp?path=SPETTACOLI&doc=ROXY > > Cecilia in Venice, Italy > ----------------------------------------------------- > > messaggio inviato con Freemail by superEva > http://www.supereva.it > > ----------------------------------------------------- > > > ___________________________________________________________________________ > The subliminable footer says: > To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: > unsubscribe avalon ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 25 Sep 2001 11:45:51 EDT From: Helchat@aol.com Subject: Re: [AVALON] In The Beginning In a message dated 9/25/01 7:41:58 AM Pacific Daylight Time, cjem@his.com writes: << What on earth did we manage to talk about back then? >> I remember I was on the list for a very short time in 1995-1996. Zen was in touch with Toshio, the official Chris Spedding site’s master, who promised Zen he would provide three back stage passes for us. With this hope, I was gettin’ prepared to leave for Milan; I was though still at work when, at about 12.00 a.m., those crazy Annalisa, Danilo and Zen rang me from Milan: they were in deep excitement ‘cause they had just crossed Phil’s way on a major street in Milan, and made pictures with him. My envy was already at top levels… I came to Milan at 5 p.m. The gang was so nice to pick me up at the railway station and to wait for me at my hotel those 20 minutes that were necessary for me to artificially contrast what nature provided. Off we went. Please note: in Danilo's car, there was no way to listen to Roxy Music... thousands of cassettes of anything else but NO ROXY! shame shame Gates were supposed to open at 6 p.m.. There we were at 7.30 (bloody traffic!!) but the gates were still closed, and a exiguous number of (maybe 30?) fans were waiting outside. In the meantime Andrea from Rome-Avalonia had reached us, so there were the 6 of us: Annalisa, her friend Maurizio, Zen, Andrea, Danilo and Cecilia. What wonderful people Avalon brings together!! There wasn’t any backstage passes for us at the cass. Toshio had forgetten us. As gates opened, we could easily reach the very first row. At 8 p.m. the arena seemed to hold less than 2000 people. What a shame, Italy! We were very excited and all the people round us had to understand who the real fans were. Annalisa and Andrea spent their very last money on the merchandising, and I suddenly thought the best way to spend some time was to draw with my lipstick a “-2: Happy birthday, Bryan” on the back side of the tour poster Andrea had just bought. Zen and Danilo, who’s an artist, helped me out with pencils. At about 8.30, lights were suddenly off and the finnish support band was stepping on stage. I recognized Emmi and greeted her loud, which she seemed to appreciate. The support band was not bad at all; much better than Joshua Kadison in Munich. They played some rock, very energic stuff. What’s best - it didn’t last long. At something past 9, lights were on again. Then we surprisingly noticed an english speaking pair standing close to us. Danilo got talking to them and what a surprise to find out they were Avalonians too! Mark Heptinstall and his wife were there. This must be really the Avalonia’s attraction power: without even knowing us, we had come straight to the same place! Afterwards I recalled having seen Mark’s wife in Castle Howard last year. It’s a small world, she commented. Finally the show started. Not many changes to Munich; one was Andy’s dress, that was blue in Munich, in Milan violet (nobody told him violet in an unlucky colour in Italy?!) with an orange stripe on the arms and an orange tie. Somehow discussable, but Andy can wear whatever he wants. The usual (always moving) start, the usual set list. Only MOP was dropped, and replaced by Avalon and Dance Away (I personally would have preferred Bittersweet and Sea Breezes!!). I feared Virginia Plain would also be dropped and I kept shouting at Phil they should do that song. He just laughed. Actually, Virginia Plain came at the end of the show, Phil smiled and we went crazy. We shouted and yelled and danced all the time. The only song the audience respected with most silence was In Every Dream Home a Heartache, that was perhaps the highlight of the whole concert. We were standing in front of Phil and I could notice all details of his white shoes, but unluckily I could hardly see my latest favourite, Andy, because we were too far away from his side. Photographers and cameramen were constantly standing on the way, so that Lucy too was impossible to see. We had a ball with Phil. We were singing and waving up all the time and he was laughing and smiling back at us, he seemed to recognize Annalisa, Danilo and Zen from the morning. Yannick was there too, she smiled at me often and seemed to have a great time as well. One difference I spotted to the Munich gig is concerning Bryan’s presence on stage. There he was holding back, like he didn’t want to put the other ones in the shade; here he was more present, just seldom he was leaving the centre to stand on a corner. It seemed like he wanted to be the scene’s master again. Bryan was in a great form, quite handsome (!!) and seemed to have a ball. When photographers went besides and we were better to be viewed from the stage, Annalisa, Maurizio and I lifted up our poster with the “Happy birthday!” painting. Bryan saw it and blinked at us (not too moved, probably). I personally had a own mission: I wanted to make Andy smile. I waved up at him, threw him kisses, he would look at me but always so serious and statuary. Till the moment in which he (standing by Phil) couldn’t resist any longer and broke in a timid smile: Annalisa and I were making such a big show to catch their attention and Phil was already laughing. We were contagious! to be continued......
