Probably, but I would never know. King Crimson seldom play Sweden. After seeing Roxy I realised that live concerts are not for me any more. Too many people for someone living out in sticks. I like Stockholm's concert hall where I saw Ferry, my first concert, in 1977. But it's six hours on the train to Stockholm these days and there are not that many I would do that for. It was Thursday, September 13 th. 02.00 PM when I arrived at the AHOY. I had taken a day-off from work. I thought this would be the last chance to meet them. I'm a Roxy-fan from the beginning and a collector for more than 10 years now. I've seen RM once in 1982 in Ahoy, but never met one of them personally. The red coloured trailers were already there. Some crewmembers were walking around the parking place wearing polo-shirts with the Tour 2001 emblem. Other people were walking in en out the artistentrance. But no Roxy Music members. "Are they inside already?", I asked the doorkeeper. "No", he answered. Thank goodness!. Then Esther, Renate and Ed arrived. I could reassure them that they were not too late. In the following hours some more fans arrived. I met Jimbo for the first time. He had some photoalbums with him with pictures from the 70's. Some great photo's of Phil with Quiet Sun. Then Julia Thornton, Zev Kats, Lucy Wilkins and Colin Good arrived. Zev was not in a good mood, because the disaster in America. All of them were so kind to sign my Roxy Music Magazine and Julia and Lucy took some time for a little talk. Lucy told us that Bryan and Andy would arrive apart by plane from England. Then Paul Thompson and Phil Manzanera (and his wife) arrived. Paul signed my magazine and Phil and his wife watched Jimbo's photoalbums. Phil said to his wife: "I didn't change much, did I?" After that Phil promised us to come back later for some pictures and autographs. And he did. From Phil we heard that Chris Spedding was already in the hall. We missed him (or did'nt recognize him). Phil would ask Chris to come to meet us and so Chris did. At 04:00 PM Bryan and Phil arrived at the Ahoy in a Mercedes-bus. Bryan tried to open the side-door and I helped him. Andy tried to walk in the hall directly, but we could hold him up. Bryan also took some time for Jimbo's photoalbums and posed for some photo's and gave his autograph. Although the concert hadn't even started yet, this day was one of the best days in my life.......... The gig was great. I enjoyed it very much and I think RM enjoyed it too. Then we went to "De Blauwe Vis" for the Re-make/Re-model afterparty. They played as good as usual and the audience enjoyed it very much. I even saw some English avalonians go on their knies............ Next day a couple of Dutch Avalonians got to Antwerp for the next RM gig. We arrived at 06:00 pm and inspected the in and outs of the "sportpaleis" to find the artists-entrance. Then a security-man made us clear that there was no possibility to wait there for the artists and asked us friendly to leave. We arranged some posters (took them from the windows of the hall) and Dick, Petra and I were interviewed by the Belgian television (which was broadcasted next monday!) We had no arena-tickets, but before the gig began we were reunited with the other Avalonians in the arena, because there was no security at the doors and we could walk in without any problem. The gig was great. In my opinion the sound was better than AHOY. Tara, tara, tara and one by one RM left the stage. I thought this was the last time I saw them. But then I heard someone whisper: "Walk-on, walk-on" and so we walked backstage. I heard two security people say to each other: "They don't have a back-stage pass", but they weren't able to stop us. So there I was, backstage, hoping to meet some Roxy members. Lucy was the first one who came in and we talked a while. From the place where I stood I had a view to the dressingrooms of Phil and Andy. The doors were open. Slowly I moved in that direction with the tourbook and a pencil in my hands. Andy looked my way and then I thought: "It's now or never", entered his room and asked for an autograph. Andy was very kind to me and signed the tourbook. Then I entered Phil's room, who was also very kind and signed the tourbook. Then I saw Paul standing in the corridor. He was talking to Ron (the singer of Remake/Remodel). After that I talked a little with Paul and he also signed the tourbook and posed with me for a photo. Chris, Zev, Colin and Victoria signed the tourbook too but Bryan's autograph was still missing. I went to his dressing room. The door was open, but a security-man was barricading the doorway. A lady who, I think, belonged to the staff was so kind to get an autograph of Bryan for me. Then we went back to Holland, tired but satisfied. A dream came true.........47 years old, a fan from the start, a collector since 1990, an Avalonian since a couple of years, a proud father of a 3,5 years old son, named Danny Bryan. Also some question in regard to the original "First Kiss" CDs: 2) There are 2 versions of "Do the strand", tracks 8 and 11 on CD2. On my copy, about the first 2 seconds of the song are missing on track 8 and on track 11 the word "sensation" has 2 nasty silence gaps in it to make the word unrecognizable. Do the originals have the same problem? If yes, are there any undamaged versions of the same tracks on other bootlegs? 3) BTW I discovered recently, that the unlisted track 13 on CD2 is a rather crackly version of "The Pride and the Pain", which appears in a flawless remastered version on "The Thrill Of It All". I rather like this instrumental, it sounds very mysterious, like a very dramatic and moody film score and has some beautiful piano, sax and guitar work and also some mysterious ambient noises (like some sudden drum beats or slaps on wood or something) and voices , probably in Spanish. Anybody else who likes this track or knows anything about it that they'd be prepared to share? Anybody understands what is being said? 4) Track 3 on CD2 is "Grey Lagoons", but it is introduced as "The Bogus Man Part 2"! I suppose that is a hint, that this performance must have been pre album release. On the "For Your Pleasure" album GL follows straight after BM, but I suppose that is the only connection between those 2 songs? 5)I remember an Eno quote in which he said about his time with Roxy that he often did not know what he was doing with that synthesizer during live performances. Maybe he was a bit harsh there on himself, certainly it does not apply to his contributions on the studio albums. But I do find that it shows up in some tracks of "First Kiss". Try track 6 on CD2 "Chance Meeting" , the synthesizer really goes against the grain there in a rather disturbing manner. Also on some other tracks it sounds a bit, like he is doing his own thing rather then blend in. I am aware that this is the very raw, random edge of the early Roxy Music that some fans enjoy and I still like it myself, but I personally feel that Roxy live sounded more together with Eddie Jobson and now Lucy Wilkins. Maybe Eno really is at his best and at home in a studio but left a bit high and dry with the on the spot demands of a life performance? 6) The whole "First Kiss" double CD is a real treasure and I've heard rumours that this BBC material was or is being considered for official release. Any information on that? While we are waiting, anybody knows a source to get hold of an original copy of the bootleg? Hope I did not ask too many questions that have been covered in the past but I don't have the time or inclination to go through the whole lot of the archives. thank you Gunter ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 24 Sep 2001 04:39:10 +0100 From: "Chris Turner" Subject: Re: [AVALON] "First Kiss" questions, request for some Bootleg cover art scans Gunther, You can get First Kiss here: http://www.midnightrecords.com/60scds6.html The Deluxe BBC Files 2CD listed there has identical content to First Kiss, but slightly inferior artwork.
