I have always really liked Roxy/Ferry because of the different takes on romantic love present in Ferry's lyrics (and how the music supports and enhances them). But I really think Mr. Ferry is particularly wonderful on what I'd broadly call unrequited love, although it's not quite as simple or naive (pathetic) as that. "Rock of Ages" turns out, for me, to be a pretty good example of that--a story from the point of view of the long-suffering person who loves "more" in that relationship, waiting patiently for the one who loves "less." Or, now that I listen again, is RoA a song about someone truly miserable and obsessed? "Try to move me as of old" "Will you stay and share my sorrow?" Perhaps your viewpoint depends upon your viewpoint of what Mr. Ferry is like. And perhaps it's not an "either/or" situation either (which always makes things that much more interesting). Disclaimer: Just as I don't believe that all of Mr. Ferry's songs are autobiographical, all of my posts should not be read in that same light. She has been really thrilled by the reception she has received from everyone in England and she asked me to assure all Americans in any doubt about coming over here that they will be made more than welcome. She had serious doubts about coming and her travel plans were disrupted by recent events but she is so glad she came. My reaction to seeing her unexpectedly was to hug her and tell her how sorry I am about what has happened in her country and she says this has been typical. She said Continental Airlines were actually polite and pleasant and genuinely thanked all passengers for travelling with them instead of the usual grudging acknowledgement of their presence. Her flight was delayed by a couple of hours because of extra security checks which were thorough, to say the least, and she felt very confident to travel. Hope this helps reassure anyone in the US still trying to decide whether to come over for next week's concerts. Viva is my favorite Roxy album, I like live albums, ans one of the reasons I still like Roxy, but has stopped listening to other bands I liked in 70's (King Crimson, Genesis, Yes, Family eyc). The other reasons is that Roxy's music is more original and timeless. This tour proved it, did it not? And if they have recorded every concert of the tour, we'll might get If There Is Something since it has been preformed.
