After leaving the million plus Metropolis of Stockholm for a house in the woods in a remote village I discovered why I do not like cities or crowds any more. I am not used to being bumped into or touched by strangers... Meeting with my collegue Peter and his girlfriend in Malmo and taking the train over the strait to Copenhagen we arrive to hear the soundcheck at the sports arena that Roxy Music performs at. We waited and were led to Phil Manzanera's dressing room. He was very polite and offered Peter, a Danish journalist and myself cold soft drinks and water. We then had a long talk over an hour I guess. The good news is that they have taped all concerts of the tour and they will probably release it. They will not record an other studio album. The bad news is that it will not be any more concerts after the 50 (that means no Stockholm which surprised even Phil Manzanera) and that my tape recorder gave up. I'll get Peter's notes and hopefully a tape from the Danish journalist. I did not have a chance to ask all of the questions, but will check back with Phil Manzanera after the tour. Here are a few recollections: Phil Manzanera and Roxy Music are very pleased and surprised regarding the response of the tour. They have played better then the last times around, they have gotten better reviews and have had a great response from the audiences. They have no manager so they get on better among themselves. One reason that Manzanera and the others went on tour was to preserve Roxy Music's legacy as something more then the 80's tracks that are being played on the radio. I guess this is why they do not perform all the hits and strong songs from the last two studio albums and none from Manifesto. Manzanera said that Roxy had maybe two classics and I said that he was hard on himself and they had at least ten. Manzanera meantion Ladytron and In Every Dream Home A Heartache as two of the songs that they wanted to breathe life into again. Brian Eno and Bryan Ferry are friendly, as are Eno, Manzanera and Mackay, so the reasons why they did not ask him were two: they know that he dislikes touring and he would have little to do when Roxy are playing songs from "Stranded" and onwards. Manzanera, who is one of the forces behind this tour, have not spoken to Eddie Jobson for eight years or so, and since nobody knew where he is they did not ask Jobson to join them. Manzanera insisted on Paul Thompson and Chris Spedding to get a harder sound then Roxy had for the last tours in the 80's. "We don't want people to just come for Avalon" he said. Well sometimes they don't even get that, I replied to an affirmative smile from Manzanera. Roxy have always had problems with bass players and when they were going to invite John Wetton to join, he left them for Uriah Heep "since they were having their own jet at time". Manzanera liked Alan Spenner, "but he died". (otherwise Spenner might have been invited, but Manzanera did not say that.) Manzanera said that the numeral ever-changing bass players was hard on Paul Thompson and it might have been one, of several reasons, that TGPT left in 1980. Unlike what Ferry said in 1980, Manzanera do not need to change people between albums. Manzanera do have some tapes from the 70's, with Eno and without, but not all of the concerts. The quality is not, if I understood correctly, always up to par but Manzanera will listen to them again. Roxy Music is not under any contract, but Virgin has the rights to their back catalogue, but not to the solo stuff re-released on his own label. Manzanera hopes to bring 801 back on tour, with Eno! Manzanera even hinted that Eno might be a special guest at the up-coming LOndon concerts. When I said that 801 live is one of favorite albums of all time Manzanera was genuinely pleased and asked if I had bought the expanded version, which I promised to do. I asked David Gilmour's question from this list: * Phil co-wrote a song from the 1987 Pink Floyd album ' A Momentary Lapse of * Reason' , called ' One Slip' Manzanera was invited through a mutual friend to help David Gilmour write a single. Manzanera seams pleased with the outcome and liked the royalties. Roxy never split up in 1983, they just finished the tour and "litterally went to in different directions". Manzanera has spent most of the time since to re-explore his Latin American roots, but you know that. It was nice to meet two Avalonians, and sorry that I was not more social, but the interview and talking about my late father's estate over the mobile took some time. Ok, I knew what to expect. I've read the setlists and the comments. I've heard two concerts. But after seeing three previous Roxy concerts and one Ferry (plus the 1976 Swedish TV special) I musy say I am impressed. I was singing songs on train back and the Swedes I overheard were positive, as was my friend Peter's review in Swedish. If this was a special night they were awesome. A great effort, I even coped with the short version of Street Life and the lack of MOP and ITIS (if someone taped it I am intrested). My favorite track. In Every Dream Home A Heartache was the one that really got the crowd going. After that it was just a great ride to the final bow from TGPT. Setlist Copenhagen: 18th Sept.
