For what it's worth, I almost didn't go to the European concerts that had been booked and planned for weeks and weeks - I just didn't have the heart for it. Several friends that I have made through Avalon e-mailled me privately on the morning of departure urging me to go. I am now so glad that I did go - it sounds trite but we all do have to live for the present, and grab positive experiences where we can. The impeccably observed three minute silence occured when I was in the airport on my way to Antwerp. I thought of the five hundred Britons who had died thousands of miles from home including two that I know albeit as acquaintances rather than friends. The airport ground to a halt and all of the traffic on the roads outside stopped, it was very moving (you KNOW what I mean). I was on countless flights, trains, tubes and buses for four days and met lots of people including many Americans. In Britain we have what is called the Dunkirk spirit - every sane person comes together and pulls together through a terrible ordeal - this spirit was evident where ever I went in Britain and mainland Europe. Come to Britain, and revel in the life-affirming experience that I had in Berlin. It will do you good to get away. - -----Original Message----- From: owner-avalon@smoe.org [mailto:owner-avalon@smoe.org]On Behalf Of M. M, If you're scared to get on a plane, don't get on a plane. But if you're scared to get on a plane because you think it may be involved in any terrorist activity, then get on that plane, because: security is amazingly tight, wear your best undies because it stops just short of strip searching at the moment. Expect delays but expect to travel more safely than you ever have done before. All access to plane cockpits during flights are now being sealed. The rules have changed and no-one assumes that terror in the air will result in negotiation anymore and therefore there's nothing to lose if a hundred odd passengers decide they'll jump five terrorists armed with anything less than guns There's talk of putting armed security on board all flights - although when that comes into force I don't know. If all these measures still don't convince you, then fly El Al. I did once when I came to NY for 8 weeks. Representatives from Mossad grilled me for an hour before I left JFK demanding to see travel stubs, theatre tickets, my diary, anything that could uphold my story of what I'd been doing there for that length of time. At the time I thought it a bit excessive but I also have never felt safer on a flight. Just be much more vigilant than ever. If anything looks suspicious to you, don't be embarrassed to bring it someone's attention. If I learnt anything from my NY pals over the past days it's this, life goes on. And if they can say that, I have to believe it. Look forward to seeing you here. Jocelyn - -----Original Message----- From: M. Am I crazy? The reason I hadn't considered going before was that I was supposed to be in Japan by now at the 4 David Sylvian shows over there; alas, those concerts have been postponed and so has my flight, of which I'm hoping I can get a refund to be redirected towards this new London endeavor. Basically, what I'm trying to say is, yes, go see Roxy if you can, and I want to meet every one of you Avalonians out there come the 1st and the 2nd, and if anybody has an extra (and good) seat they wouldn't mind selling me to either of the shows, I'll be sure to try and get us backstage and into the post-show party like I did at the Greek Theater here in L.A. After two and a half hours of my 5 hour journey to Edinburgh airport, I realised I had left my passport at home, so back I went making my journey 10 hours drive in total. On arriving in Amsterdam early morning, after driving through the night I saw about 6 Han Snijders lookalikes, maybe his name really is Hans. After a spot of early morning shopping and breakfast, I stumbled across no less than Paul Thompson standing outside vanDonalds or whatever you call a burger bar in Holland. As he chomped on his burger out of a polystyrene box, he said this is the glamour life of on the road with Roxy Music. We chatted for about 20 minutes before I left for my train to Rotterdam. I arrived at my hotel to find Reecey and Chris turner in the reception and joined them for dinner. It seemed strange that the last time I saw my fellow Scot Reecey was in New York in July. Its odd to have all these friends whom you meet everywhere except your home country. At the gig, all of us Brits and the Dutch contingent all gathered around the front of the barrier for over 2 hours before Roxy came on stage. The band really took to the audience and Bryan seemed to be beaming with delight at the atmosphere. He even said, its great to back in Rotterdam at two different points of the show. A few drinks backstage after the show and then we headed off to the Re-make/Re-model gig. This was a strange piece of irony in that Roxy Music where the warm up act for our evenings entertainment as the Re-make/Re-model ended off a fine evening for us. The Antwerp show was a great show too. I chatted to Phil & Andy after the show and they said Rotterdam was a great show, Glasgow, New York (1) Detroit and Japan (2) were some of the best shows for them on the tour. Lucy Wilkins again excelled herself not only as a musician but also with her vibrant personality emitting and bouncing off the crowd. If there are plans for a Video/DVD from this tour, Roxy should capitalise by fixing a camera on Lucy throughout songs like Editions Of You and sell it as The Lucy Wilkins Fitness Workout. After the backstage party myself Chris, Reecey and a few Dutch went to a pub near our hotel. After several trips to the bar the barman informed me that they had ran out of beer. As a Scotsman, this gave me a great sense of achievement and gave me faith in that at least our nation are world champions at something. I spent a few hours in the streets of Amsterdam on Saturday evening before I flew home. There were lots of scantily clad ladies modelling underwear in the shop windows. One lady opened the door and asked:- would you like super s*x I replied Ill have the soup please John OBrien P.S. thanks to Han, Andy, Ed, Renate, Esthar and Ron for a wonderful weekend. H. Soetemann" Subject: [AVALON] Roxy Music in Berlin Dear Avalonians interested - having returned to Bremen in the meantime, I thought I'd post a few - belated - personal impressions of the Berlin show. It hasn't worked out earlier today, something wrong with the e-mail connection or whatever... The Max-Schmeling-Halle was probably about 80 per cent full when the curtain swept to the left side to reveal an already storming Roxy Music with Re-make/Re-model, powerfully played. Bryan's voice, it seemed to me, has gained more power on the louder songs over the course of the tour whilst retaining the unique melancholy on the more introverted material. The sound mix was very good for the most part. Street Life was played in the shorter version. ASFE very emotional, instead of three times "jamais" it's now five or six times again, I trainspotted. Lucy's OOTB solo ignited the flame for most of the audience. During the first half which features the more exotic material, I reckoned that Roxy is still on that thread between mass success and cult following. This was also echoed in the audience response. During My Only Love, I liked Bryan's Sprechgesang - I associated that with the earlier period material. Here on stage, it all came together. Dream Home very intense, eerie violin, jazzy sax, some more guitar chords by Chris Spedding (I assume) during the first part. Noisy guitars galore on the final solo of BEB - the harmonica/guitar "duet" part also present, by the way. After Oh Yeah, the crowd got quite enthusiastic, so Jealous Guy, EOY &c. were met with lots of applause. Vicky excelled herself on Avalon. For Your Pleasure a stunning closer, leaving many surprised - a drone fading in to Colin Good's heavily delayed piano chords ends the show, clocking in at above 100 minutes. No MOP, but the performance seemed even more shining than the Munich concert I saw. The set list is already on John and Emma's wonderful website, so I'll leave it out here. After the show, I waited outside to see whether the band would pass my way. I was the only person waiting there, but then subsequently many others appeared, and when Phil Manzanera exitted the hall, everyone seemed to leave me behind and rushed ahead to get an autograph. But he signed my CD as well, and Julia as well as Vicky some time later, kindly gave an autograph. When Bryan Ferry arrived, all the crowd rushed to get his autograph. He took some time to sign, already standing in the bus door. He didn't speak much, there were lots of CDs &c. to sign, but I got my copy of the FYP digipack CD signed. I'll leave out the more embarrassing details of the story which would make me appear a wretched little existence (even more), so I'll stop here. Anyway, tomorrow off to Hamburg. I hope I can enjoy it.
