I have heard / seen it three times thus far on this year's tour and, with Pearl and Both Ends Burning, it forms a triumverate of early songs that have never been better performed. From Spedding's joyous slide guitar in the country verse to Bryan's controlled re-registering on "Lift up...." this is a precious jewel in the reformation. (Not to mention that gorgeous moment on the Glasgow recording when the Cool Ruler rebuffs the over zealous stage minders with "Don't mind these people, come down here, we want to take a look at you." and, with barely a breath, launches into that little death "Shake your head girl swing your pony tail...") I guess the writing was on the wall as the band shaved the running time of this number during the UK tour (7mins, 6mins, 5mins,), trimming that langourous, sax-sad middle section. Its hard not to conclude that this was one of the lesser know tracks - outside perfumed Avalonia - and it was a tad outre for the "Oh Yeah" crowd. But I really can't believe they thought "it didn't come together." Martino - ---------- From: "Peter Seely" I have it from a highly placed source that there's no way they're going to do "ITIS" anymore. Apparently they just didn't think it came together like they wanted it to. Personally I would love to hear how it sounds after playing it for months. ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 17 Sep 2001 11:32:47 +0200 From: Daniel Atterbom Subject: Re: [AVALON] fly glasses At 09.12 +0100 1-09-17, philipcadams@lineone.net wrote: >Daniel, come on, think. It's a song I've always liked, and I wish they'd have dropped another track instead. Having only seen it performed on this tour, I have nothing to compare it to (apart from Viva!), but I sort of understand why they dropped it. I was thinking a bit about Christian's idea of the CD of Ferry's religious songs--I don't have the previous posts handy so I can't quote his phrase exactly (and I want to find a few minutes to make a few more comments about "Psalm," too). But what made me give "Rock of Ages" a whirl was reading these lines in a rather idle fashion > Ring the changes > Ring all changes as I could hear my friends ringing a peal on the bells at National Cathedral a few blocks away (and feeling a twinge of guilt at my absence at practices for the last few months). Reading that back into the lyrics of a song about a long-suffering lover who may be losing the interest of and interest in his/her love interest caught my attention. In this context, to "ring the changes/ring all changes" would be to investigate each possible combination of sounds and patterns, done in a methodical fashion, with each possible factor--in that case, the bells--moving just one place in every pass, but moving steadily all the way through the pattern (known as a "method," by the way). That sort of knowledge about someone, that depth, and that thoroughness is very appealing to me. I thought that it was disappointing. From where I was, the mix was terrible, the worst being "Editions of You" when only the piano riff could be heard over and over again. Bryan's voice sounded totally knackered. There was little variation in his range and not much strength. In fact I thought that he was very subdued all evening. About a hundred people rushed to the front of the stage at the beginning of Street Life (a security guy passed me shrugging his shoulders - great stuff) and there seemed to be some interplay between Bryan and the people right down the front. But the rest of the crowd were bemused by the early stuff, and took quite a while to warm up. If that had been my only sight of them this tour I would have been highly fed up. However ... Berlin - WOW! The other end of the spectrum. Bryan came out looking more tousled than ever! The sound was excellent, you could hear each instrument clearly, the crowd cheered Remake Remodel, Ladytron and IEDHAH and went mental for SFE. There seemed to be a lot more interaction between the three main players (I mean down the front Paul fans), and Bryan extemporised more (even though his voice still sounded tired). Big smiles all round, several people fainted and had to be carried out, well as I said Bryan WAS very tousled! The band was scorching and the crowd were lapping it up. I have to admit that in answer to "What's her name?" I was the only person in a ten foot radius who shouted back Virginia Plain, which was a bit embarrassing but Berlin was fantastic. It made up for getting lost trying to find the venue, in the pitch dark in an East Berlin industrial estate, totally spooky. It made up for having Herman Munster and his identical twin brother standing in front of me all evening. I even got one of the pink T-shirts for half what they were going for at Wembley (probably never have the guts to wear it in public). A fantastic night, they just didn't look like they wanted to leave the stage. It would be interesting to know how they compared Berlin to the other two because to me they seemed like two different bands. Look out Copenhagen, you are in for a GREAT evening. - -----Original Message----- From: owner-avalon@smoe.org [mailto:owner-avalon@smoe.org]On Behalf Of Ed Stobbelaar Sent: 16 September 2001 23:19 To: avalon@smoe.org Subject: Re: [AVALON] Rotterdam and Antwerp - ----- Original Message ----- From: Han Snijders > Antwerp was in sound and the playing of the band the best concert so far. > Andy M said after the show that this was the evening where they were at > their best.
