Our PBS station ran a promo for the "Legacy of Sun Records" -- evidently, featuring a conglomeration of rock stars who are performing and/or talking about music from this label. And yes! Our very own Bryan will be one of the musicians. They showed a glimpse of him in a studio -- whether he'll be singing something or talking about the music, I couldn't tell. The date was November 28th -- this seemed more of a national promo, not a local PBS thing, but check your own listings as the date comes closer. And perhaps someone can record it for our friends abroad. Secondly -- I've found the comments of the past days very interesting, with regard to what people have (and haven't) been listening to, musicwise. I concur -- while I generally live on regular doses of Roxy and Bryan, it just hasn't held any appeal this week. These are dark days, and for all the discussion of B.F.'s "darkness" a few months back, it seems that romantic/mysterious darkness doesn't work after something like this. But the flood of emotions has made me dig out a few things that I haven't listened to in awhile. Peter Gabriel's third album -- a good dark work, for sure, with plenty of political and social observations. "Games Without Frontiers" particularly resonates. Just observing, Susan P.S. Do you think it's a BAD indication, that the only time I see ANY advertising regarding B.F. is at 4 a.m.? The following is old, and some may remember it. It may ring a little ackward after so many years... But some may find parts worth a read at this time. TRIBUTE TO THE UNITED STATES This, from a Canadian newspaper, no less, is worth sharing. America: The Good Neighbor. Widespread but only partial news coverage was given recently to a remarkable editorial broadcast from Toronto by Gordon Sinclair, a Canadian television commentator. What follows is the full text of his trenchant remarks as printed in the Congressional Record: "This Canadian thinks it is time to speak up for the Americans as the most generous and possibly the least appreciated people on all the earth. Germany, Japan and, to a lesser extent, Britain and Italy were lifted out of the debris of war by the Americans who poured in billions of dollars and forgave other billions in debts. None of these countries is today paying even the interest on its remaining debts to the United States. When France was in danger of collapsing in 1956, it was the Americans who propped it up, and their reward was to be insulted and swindled on the streets of Paris. I was there. I saw it. When earthquakes hit distant cities, it is the United States that hurries in to help. This spring, 59 American communities were flattened by tornadoes. Nobody helped. The Marshall Plan and the Truman Policy pumped billions of dollars into discouraged countries. Now newspapers in those countries are writing about the decadent, warmongering Americans. I'd like to see just one of those countries that is gloating over the erosion of the United States dollar build its own airplane. Does any other country in the world have a plane to equal the Boeing Jumbo Jet, the Lockheed Tri-Star, or the Douglas DC10? If so, why don't they fly them? Why do all the International lines except Russia fly American Planes? Why does no other land on earth even consider putting a man or woman on the moon? You talk about Japanese technocracy, and you get radios. You talk about German technocracy, and you get automobiles. You talk about American technocracy, and you find men on the moon - not once, but several times and safely home again. You talk about scandals, and the Americans put theirs right in the store window for everybody to look at. Even their draft-dodgers are not pursued and hounded. They are here on our streets, and most of them, unless they are breaking Canadian laws, are getting American dollars from ma and pa at home to spend here. When the railways of France, Germany and India were breaking down through age, it was the Americans who rebuilt them. When the Pennsylvania Railroad and the New York Central went broke, nobody loaned them an old caboose. Both are still broke. I can name you 5000 times when the Americans raced to the help of other people in trouble. Can you name me even one time when someone else raced to the Americans in trouble? I don't think there was outside help even during the San Francisco earthquake. Our neighbors have faced it alone, and I'm one Canadian who is damned tired of hearing them get kicked around. They will come out of this thing with their flag high. And when they do, they are entitled to thumb their nose at the lands that are gloating over their present troubles. I hope Canada is not one of those." Stand proud, America! A little hokey, but there it is. _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 14 Sep 2001 11:46:06 -0700 From: William Sommers Subject: Re: [AVALON] worth a read? He's right, Eman - its a Vietnam war era piece! Look it up yourself! http://www.rcc.ryerson.ca/schools/rta/ccf/personal/hof/sincla_g.html Sinclair, Gordon (1900-1984) The "biggest name" in Canadian broadcast journalism is "Gordon Sinclair". It is a name respected (sometimes reviled) by Canadians - a name revered by Americans in all fifty states and around the world. Gordon Sinclair's greatest achievement was his CFRB LET'S BE PERSONAL broadcast of June 5, 1973 - a broadcast which echoed around the world and which history will record as one of the most respected tributes from Canada to the people of the United States of America. The United States had just pulled out of the Vietnam War which ended in a stalemate - a war fought daily on TV, over radio and in the press. The war had divided the American people, and at home and abroad it seemed everyone was lambasting the United States. Outraged by what he saw and heard that morning, in his noon-hour broadcast Sinclair rose to the defense of the American people- and his voice was heard around the world - and as no Canadian had before - or since. For weeks afterwards, his words were repeated over and over again from thousands of radio stations - were read into the U. S. Congressional Records several times and, at the insistence of the American people, recorded for their keeping for posterity. So here we are (after much protestation that I might not make it, tight on cash and work commitments, blah, blah, blah) in Rotterdam. Me, bruv Raymond and Diane head off. Travel arrangements a little longer than usual due to recent events but no complaints. A flight from Glasgow to Amsterdam and on the train to Rotterdam - no bother. A potter around Rotterdam which was really pretty and then off to the gig in torrential rain. Nightmare scenarios for specially coiffed hair. A lot of Avalonians concerned that barnets would let them down. Not to worry, the Ahoy arena had laid on a concrete walkway to preserve appearances. The mad dash in the uncovered bit proved good training for the usual dash to the front of the gig - some of us have got a wee bit out of practice during the light gig period. Raymond didn't have a ticket but one was located for him due to the kind offices of Ed and Renate and their friend Esther who all deserve a special virtual thank you. The sounds of South Downs take up and the curtain ripples, always a spine tingling moment. Raymond turned to me and said 'the last time we saw this was in New York' an extremely poignant moment. The show itself was one of the best I have seen on this tour. Why? Phil's guitar conked out at the beginning, Bryan forgot the words on Avalon and a variety of little off moments cropped up. What was the band's reaction to this? To giggle. Why the carefree attitude? In a word THE CROWD. They were THE BEST audience I have seen on this tour and they were unstinting in their enthusiasm for the band. The chants, the screams the hysteria and the singing(? in some cases but God love them) and even the beer shower (how carried away must someone be to throw perfectly good alcohol away?) were all fodder to fire the band's enthusiasm who looked as if they were having a ball. AM was beaming at one point and Phil just kept laughing. At one point, much later than the usual 'good evening Rotterdam' Ferry leant on the microphone looked out and said 'It's great to be back in Rotterdam, I'll tell you', meant it and was shaking his head wondrously. He was having a ball, camping it up and performing as if his life depended on it. We cheered, we boogied (a nightmare in high heels - this was a description of me, and it hurt to dance too) and we generally went crazy, for sure (it had to be said at some point). The usual faces were there and of course THE DUTCH Avalonians made their presence felt. This was particularly true of poor Andy Mol who, at 6 foot 10, was told he had to stand back by my more diminutive self. Awwwwww. Sorry Andy, it's not your fault you aren't from the West of Scotland with its renowned tribes of healthy, tall people. One other person does deserve to be mentioned is Jimbo. He had first seen RM in 73 (I think) and this was his chance to relive his teens again. We tried to prepare him for how he'd feel. Nothing could have done this, not even the specially trained Avalonian advice team. I could hear him gasp and sigh next to me. After I'd apologised for stamping on his foot, he said he was really enjoying the concert as well. Nice to have met you Jimbo and apparently you have quite a good singing voice indeed. The set list was great and one person who deserves special mention was the replacement backing vocalist Vicky (Sarah Brown was unavailable). Now, I know that there has been a lot of criticism of backing singers in general on this list, but this girl was great and was remarkable for an understudy. She particularly made a mark on My Only Love and Avalon - great stuff. She also sported some of the fabbest lipstick in the business. What a diva. Anyway, I'll end this post here (I can hear Jimbo-esque sighs of relief) and will cover the ReMake/ReModel afterparty in the next post. Goodnight Rotterdam and thanks for (really) being such a great audience! The last concert I saw was in '87 I think,in The Hague Holland. Bryan with his fantastic band were doing the Mamouna tour. How great they were plaing then,I still remember. In spring I think it was, a friend said to me:Roxy will be touring later in the year. Are you going? No i said,I want to remember them as they were in the 'crazy' beginning. Do you remember '73? Roxy was playing in De Doelen in Rotterdam. Leo 'the clown' Sayer was the support act. The concert started after midnight and ended at 4 in the morning. The fans were as strange (or maybe stranger) than the band itself. 17 years old first concert ever, ooh I never forget that. No it wasn't my intention at all to go to Rotterdam. But then something happened : Oh yeah ... By accident I met Ed Stobbelaar through email. He really woke me up indeed. You MUST be there he said .... But it wasn't easy for him I took a few weeks if not months... So I bought my ticket at the end of july. We talked about many things till the old pictures were mentioned. I want to see them Ed said, and so it was done. The pressure was rising the last two weeks. I even went to London and recorded two song with Bryan ..... The second song was ready and then I woke up ........ If only dreams could be real ........ I arrived at 14.00 at Ahoy. Oh and I wasn't the first ......... The dutch Avalonians were there allright. We were looking at the pictures when I got the idea to invite the boys to look at them too. Phil do you want to see some pictures from the time before you joined Roxy? I'll be back later he said. Oh yeah and he did,we were looking 10 minutes at the pics. I think he liked it and so did his wife . My remark: Phil, you look nearly the same as on the pics was good for some laughs. Oh you also have some pics of Chris too,I'll tell him. Later a black van was arriving. Sjaak galantly opened the door,Bryan and Andy arrived. Bryan,do you want to see some pictures when you arrived in Tokyo 77? Oh and there I was talking to the greatest hero in my life again, 27 years later. Shaking all over and stupidly I forgot him to sign the foto album (maybe the next time in London in the recording studio....... :-)) .. ) Just as we were about to go away the door was opened, and there he was Mr Spedding, very relaxed. He was enjoying his youth again,he went back to the Let's stick together clip in the photo album. Chris are you playing that same guitar tonight? No the guitar is no more, but Chris was in fine form in the evening. Later I met some other Avalonians. Fantastic,I think it's even better than family. I think I made 15 friends on one day ..... I can't remember all the names, but I do know that Anton and the lovely Therese were really enjoing themselves. Thank you all very much for the great company,it was the most beautiful day in my life and I'll be back ...........
