Suddenly it doesn't seem to have the same importance. I'd certainly like to share the sentiments expressed by the majority here. The whole thing seems worse for the fact that it was acted out live on TV, like some gruesome movie. It seems pertinent to point out that two members of the current band, Yanick Etienne and Zev Katz are NY'ers, although my thoughts are with everyone touched by this awful tragedy. No matter where this happened, decent human beings around the world would be sickened to learn that thousands, if not tens of thousands, of people were murdered, as has been evidenced by the responses of people on this list, as well as by governments and inviduals around the world. I can't imagine that anyone is talking about "moral equivalency." Instead, we're all talking about an awful tragedy on a scale I can't personally comprehend. I mean, there are possibly 800 people dead in my city. When we heard that estimate late last night, my friends and I just sat with our heads in our hands. Possibly 800 people dead. And that's in no way approaching the magnitude of what happened in New York City. Personally, I am finding all of the supportive, thoughtful responses to be quite reassuring and touching. I didn't read Daniel's as anything other than that. I know people's emotions are running high--and I know firsthand how high since my city was under attack yesterday, I saw the burning Pentagon from the roof of my office building, and I heard the F16s circling all day, high and unseen. But I am asking the we try to understand each other and give each other the benefit of the doubt in this written medium and not add only ugliness to what is already so very tragic. We were delivering supplies and manpower to the scene (food water machines-masks etc) while we were still about 10 minutes away (on the Brooklyn Side) we could see the first twin tower disappear. No one spoke-it was just someething that wasn't registering in our brain. A few minutes after that-the 2nd tower collapsed. It was quiet then there were screams-and I think we all cried a little. It was like a special effects movie-you couldn't believe this was happening. We got supplies to the area which was a war zone. It was surreal-people were running looking over the shoulders as this big dust cloud sped towards them. People crying out. It looked like a desert or a moonscape. We had been told that people were jumping from the buildings-which was certain death. But most of all was the thought that there was no way anyone was going to survive this-and the magnitude of that thought. A potential 50,000 work in the twin towers and they are gone. I remember when they were being built and how they became a symbol of NYC. I worked across the street from them in the 80's. and now there gone. I have 2 friends who worked there who we haven't heard from. parents of my kids friends in school haven't been heard from. We returned to upper manhattan and did what we could, coordinating efforts etc. When going home I picked up 4 strangers trying to get across the George Washington Bridge. There was no public transport at that hour. People were doing stuff like that all day. One thing about NYC is that when the chips are down we pull together. Disasters, catastrophies only make us stronger. This morning was one of the eeriest feelings I've ever had. All roads into Manhattan were closed. No bridges, tunnels etc (or sporadic at best) As I got to the toll booth of the George Washington-blocked by police-I asked how do I get over-I showed my badge and was let across. It was like something out of a movie-I'm crossing the Bridge-no one else on the bridge-except a few medical transports-with police stationed along the bridge. I was on the Henry Hudson Parkway up to the tip of Manhattan and again no cars. I swear it was like something out of Stephen King's "The Stand". This is not over by a long shot-just one thing and I don't care if I sound maudlin or anything-kiss your wives, husbands, kids, mom and dads, your loved ones-tell them you love them-and be grateful that they are safe. Pray for the dead and be strong as Americans. jads ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 12 Sep 2001 09:39:12 -0700 From: William Sommers Subject: Re: [AVALON] SOTW: "Psalm" At 11:25 AM 9/9/01 -0400, Colleen Matan wrote: > As before the discussion is open to anything related to the song, and Okay then. While I have never reconciled with the Catholic Church, or been able to reconcile the conflicts of my scientific leanings with tenets of religion, I did (due to some very specific events) long ago recognize and accept the existence of the power of Faith. Which is perhaps the angle from which Ferry approaches here. In any case, as I read through these lyrics once again on Sunday, my thoughts instinctively turned to my constant companion of the last 13.5 years -- Jan, my cat who never quite grasped that he was not human, whose kidneys had recently failed. Something eased, or settled into place, within me and I was finally able to see with clarity that any further prolonging was for myself and not truly in his interests. Yesterday, as we all watched the tragic events unfold, I knew it was the right time, and put him down. The song had been running through my mind since Sunday, and continues to do so. Somehow, for right or wrong, it brings solace. I learned first that my entire family was accounted for, though two even started out on flights from Boston earlier in the day, fortunately just stranded throughout the country. I then learned that an acquaintance, Daniel Lewin (co-founder of Akamai and just a wonderful man), was on American Airlines flight 11, the first plane to strike the WTC. As of this moment, all friends and acquaintances who are known to work either in or within the immediate vicinity of the WTC are accounted for, save 3 from the 81st floor of Tower One. Now, I don't know that I can actually "pray", but certainly my thoughts are with those three, and Danny (and his widow and their two toddlers) and my own little Jan. And "Psalm" continues to play... > Try out your God > Hope He will send > Kindness from strangers > On whom you depend Indeed. Of all my dozens of mailing lists in which discussions have been raging since early yesterday, this is the only community which has managed to leave expressions of hatred and other pettiness behind. There was a "fog" of acrid smoke in bright sunlight enveloping the surrounding office/retail residential area. It smelled like a doused camp fire. Most of the thoroughfares into the Pentagon appear to be closed - No surprise. But folks were heading in to the Pentagon to try to conduct business as usual. It's eerie. Sorry to burden you all if this is information overload given the current circumstances, but I thought it might be of interest. It's cathartic for me as well. God Bless America! Very little can be said to make light of this situation, but I know in my heart that the good Lord will protect and keep us, and that if anything good can be taken from these events, it is that there are so many countries willing to unite against the threat of terrorism following this awful, shocking disaster. What has been done is evil, but I now hope that we can all join to protect one another from any more acts of spiteful cowardice. Nations will now have to work together to fight terrorism, and to hugely diminish any support for these sad regimes. God bless and keep you all, and here's hoping for peace and love to lead the way. I know in my heart America can pull through this, and we can all help to ensure no further tragedies are allowed to flourish. I know I can't say much to help, but I pray that the world will unite to ensure peace in this world; for all to enjoy. xxx ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 12 Sep 2001 19:37:10 +0100 From: Richard Evans Subject: [AVALON] Thoughts on a tragedy My girlfriend and I were in New York and Washington in April having a great holiday. Both cities and the people were fantastic. New York stunned us both. It seemed the city had got over its trouble of the 70s. The attitude of the people was one of pride in a great city that was theirs. It was one of the great pleasures of my life to have been there. I am just so saddened by what has happened to thousands of people and so angry that murderers have carried out a slaughter of the innocents. On Friday I shall be observing the three minute silence that will happen across Europe at 11.00 GMT along with the rest of millions of people who recognise what a tragedy for us all yesterday was.
