I can listen to FYP late at night before sleep, with the headphones on lying in bed...and it gives me some kind of mellow rush...it takes me away to some other place....an aural euphoric wonderland. The only other songs that do this to me are The Smith's Suffer Little Children (which is, ironically, about child murders) and Kate Bush's opus The Ninth Wave from Hounds of Love. I would be interested to know if any list members (1) know what I'm talking about and (2) would share any songs that have a similar effect on them. Before we all charge in it may be worth reminding ourselves of the different camps of meaning that Avalonions have pitched their tawdry tents over the years. a) It's about Eno b) It's about Ferry (I memorably described it as a Rhapsody of Self-Hate. Well, at least memorably in my mind.) c) It's not about anyone in particular. Okay. Off we all go .. May future generations forgive us for what we did. http://gmslegion.00page.com/www/fellini.html Nice photos. Maybe one of these days, there will be pics of the Chicago group partying after the stop here. We has lots of goodies ( thanks for the Ritz crackers Kelly) and lots of booze! I still have two bottles of Champagne left over for our next get together. I know Will from Wisconsin made some photos that were great. The Chicago Martini Mob was a little toasted. I've been away from the list for a while. Just came back from a short vacation. I have a new computer now ( goodbye 486 SX!) and a new e-mail address. I'm just catching up with the messages since late July (??). I know I can't add much to what has been said before, but without a doubt seeing Roxy again after all these years was a real treat. I'm still suffering withdrawal pains one month after the fact. They looked and sounded energized. The staging, the lights, the choice of songs, all just brilliant. My only complaint was the choice of venue. My Chicago pals know my views on this and has been supported by two rock critics here. Greg Kot and Jim DeRegotis are very influential and it turns out very big Roxy/Eno fans. I don't know if this has been posted ( and if is has my humble apologizes) those said two host a weekly rock talk show called Sound Opinions. The July 24th show was all about Roxy and the Chicago stop of the tour. It was a great show in fact their best show. You have never heard so much gushing over a group by two admittedly jaded rock critics as those two were that night. Two Avalonians on this list were featured callers. Pete S. and the other one whom was "giddy" with excitement. Jim D. called him a super fan. Hmm.. I wonder whom it was? Was it taped? Yes. Do copies exist? Will let you know in time. All I can say is that Chicago is very lucky to have this type of show. As for FYP, a reference was made by that first caller (?) and it become a highlighted and featured song on the show that night. I think the caller anticipated this latest discussion. It's not so much the words, although I'm glad it's finally being dissected here, but the textures/colors of the song itself that have fascinated me for all these years. Judi Dench? Okay. I thought it was some groupie or maybe the cover model. As this was created in late 1972 (?), it pointed out for the second time why Roxy sounded so fresh and original from everything that was being released at the time. A "weird" sound song from a "weird" sounding album from yet another "weird" looking group from England. No wonder America did not get it. Oh, one more thing. When Song For Europe was being sung by Bryan in Chicago, I could not help but think .. here by the Seine, ROTTERDAM casts a long lonely shadow. I know it's NOTRE DAME and for the first time I clearly heard Bryan say it. However the imagery remains the same for me. If only I had a chance to see Bryan after the show, maybe I could have convinced him to singing it that way a few times just to throw off the fans a bit :)) Tara Jas PS: Han: Alkmaar would cast and even longer shadow than Rotterdam if IT were by the Seine. The ear canals have not been dredged yet. It is always a collaborative experience in any artistic/creative experience. Ultimately the experience is your own and is influenced by many, many things - the artist can but hope.. I once heard of a an art gallery that hosted an experimental bag piper.. get my drift?? Anyway I do enjoy Bryan's use of language immensely. I especially enjoy the way he uses phrases almost like secret codes. eg. For Your Pleasure - For your pleasure In our present state Sea Breezes - We've been running round In our present state Hoping help will come from above I still haven't decided quite yet about what I think the 'present state' means.. does anyone have any other examples/ideas??
