Not only was it my first Roxy show, but it was a great show, IMO. All night I was just blown away the performances. - -Rob ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 24 Aug 2001 01:43:30 +0100 From: "Chris Turner" Subject: Re: [AVALON] (the first) song of the week: "For Your Pleasure" I think that the repeated use of Tara at the end od FYP shows the deep and profound influence his duet with Cilla Black had on his later work. In other words, FYP as Ferry's attempt at some kind of explanation of himself -- apologia -- to his father, whose life was so different from Ferry's. I thought this interpretation was strengthened by the fact that "Tara" is -- I thought -- a place name in the U.K. that has some "mythical" ancestral resonance for Ferry. For example, this from the Internet: "Ireland. The magical and mysterious 'Emerald Isle' has so many fascinating places to visit. The breathtaking West Coast with its numerous sacred sites. The Boyne valley with the amazing energy centres of Newgrange, Knowth and Tara, seat of the ancient Kings." . . . "Tara, seat of the ancient Kings" - --Paul in Milwaukee NP. Subject: [AVALON] Re; SOTW. FYP, has never been one that I play to often. It to me is somewhat of a lullaby , sounds so very personal. Heartfelt , melancholy. My view of this song & I may be way out in left field. Is Bryan thinking of his Father? Someone who worked very hard to provide for his family the best he could. Bryan reflecting on his Father, telling him now that he is older how he understands the sacrifices his Father made, always there the weight of hardship on his shoulders, going to bed at night & waking up in the morning with things being a little lighter.Maybe harsh words were spoken , the words you wish never were said as they are all over your shoulders, getting older. But comes the morning , things will be a little lighter. You'll see me make a change with every step, old man, I'll walk away now. Tara Tara. To me that is what? Tara was a big plantation in the South as GWTW. Scarlett said I'll never leave Tara. Is this Bryan's way of saying ,I'll never leave you, & Tara means better things coming for all & that is why its repeated over & over. Later comes a son for Bryan & what does he name him? Tara!--- I feel Bryan's music & lyrics is not always about what he & Roxy are doing. Why always sing about a group of guys you work with ?. I believe Bryan's mind is so full of still unspoken words , yet afraid to expose them for fear of what people might think. He gives us only what he wants us to share with him ,in fragments at a time. His words so complex, draws us in to savor a little of that feeling. The feeling though sometime is like you really are in something so personal. The effect his lyrics has on people is what makes Bryan Ferry. Its what makes the fans beg for more. Like wanting to get inside his brain to see what makes the man what he is. I don't believe we'll ever see that .He'll give us only what he wants to give & we'll still want more & just maybe he can't give more.
