Actually Sally-Ann, given your series of responses yesterday and today, I'm afraid you may have misunderstood the "sorting." I did apologize if I had hurt your feelings. However, given your subsequent behavior, I am afraid that you missed the fact that I did not retract the substantive part of my original post about conduct lately on Avalon. The woman certainly has the physical ability to sing, but she is one of the worst singers of songs I have ever heard, and it chills me that she has a reputation as a great interpreter. Her ego is so vast she is simply incapable of presenting a song. Rather than using her voice to interpret a song, she uses the song to present herself. The great interpreters - Sinatra, Ella, Louis, Brother Ray and so forth, - however considerable some of their egos, were able to leave those egos at the studio door and actually SERVE THE SONG! Sinatra particularly is possibly the single greatest reader of a set of lyrics in popular music, and you always feel he's got to the very centre of the song itself, giving us all sorts of new insights. Streisand is like a big fat Texan in a ten gallon hat - " Texas Ted, Big Hat, Big Head, " anyone? - who sits right in front of you at the theatre and blocks the stage. Her ego is the hat, and with it she blocks the song. 2.) Barbra Streisand movies Hollywood is apparently terrified of her, and gives her all the money she wants for movies that always bomb, and have no artistic merit either. Isaac bashevis Singer hated YENTL. 3.) Barbra Streisand concerts In which, judging by video clips I've seen, we're expected to find every fart of her babyhood of immense fascination. Five hundred bucks to look at her photograph album, and worship her God-given genius. That's enough pet hates. David, Firstly thanks very much for pointing us to e-bay. Obviously I've know about it for ages but seldom surf to look up the Roxy/Ferry stuff up for auction, although I know a whole heap of aliases here who do. So inspired by your e-mail I had a look. It was with absolute dismay that I came across a couple of items that were obviously gleaned purely with the intention of making a fast buck (or a hundred). Don't get me wrong, Roxy and particularly Ferry have made a mint out of most of us over the years so I guess there is the argument of why not redress the balance a little, but when I see pictures of people having albums, and even more so, a drum skin signed by all of Roxy only a couple of weeks ago going direct to ebay it makes me wonder why they even bothered. Isn't the idea of an autograph something personal to the person having it signed? I wouldn't dream of buying a signed item, but have fond memories of every time I have had single pieces of memorabilia signed for me personally. The problem is that when people go in bulk signing it really does piss the lads off. I saw Ferry asked to sign 4 or 5 times for the same person recently and although he was absolutely charming to comply, his body language spoke volumes as he turned his back to the person, wouldn't look at them or chat. It also makes it very difficult for the not so pushy people who have waited patiently at stage doors to get their first and one and only signing if someone is monopolising the signers. Just a personal view, but if you need the cash, sell your dog, sell your car, sell your house, even sell your ass if you have to, but hang onto your Roxy stuff for Pete's sake. And if filthy lucre is your mistress, it would all be worth so much more in the long run anyway. Somehow, I was not surprised to hear the reformed Roxy Music have no manager currently on board. It just seems so, so Ferry-like to be out in the cold again, not knowing which way to turn. I sort of like that - managers are too often over-rated. On the other hand - the fan hand- I now understand why some things about this tour seem haphazard or not well thought out. Such a burden it must be for the guys: Not only do they have to travel and play, they now must guide themselves through the mechanics of the shooting match as well. I can empathize, I may even sympathize, but why, why are they without a manager? Does Mr. Manzanera know something about Brian Eno that we (oh my gosh) might not know? But now, there is the sadness that descends for those of us not in Europe or Japan (3 shows in Tokyo! Are they that popular there?) who have only our diminishing memories of the event to go by. One of my favorite memories was of a man at the first New York show who was standing up for much of the show,(they let people stand there and only booted those back who were blocking the exit aisles);this man pumped his body back and forth to the music,it was as though his body was a baton, and he was conducting the "Roxy Music orchestra". This kind of fan response, which I saw at the 2 Boston and 2 New York shows I attended did seem to bring out a warmth from the band members,Phil always seemed to be smiling, even when his guitar quit before he did on Ladytron(first New York show),Paul seems to be the type who can be happy anywhere,be it a small club or a large arena,as long as he can bang on those drums all day.And if Andy seemed enigmatic(tired?sore back?),well it didn't show playing-the emotions in his music were enough for me. The rest of the band was similarly superb in their parts, and so Chris played the role of the gunslinger for hire who was always ready to shoot down the toughest riff,Julia had the cool sunglassed persona turning into the let the hair down wild woman percussionist act.Lucy had more than just her moment of glory(Out of the Blue),her keyboard playing had a real flair.Sarah and Yanick(wish she could have been in Boston) have voices to match any Scylla or Charybdis, and Colin seemed to love that fact that, hey,I'm in a real rock and roll band-so much for that classical training. And Zev looked the part-and his playing was OK,I guess, for a traitorous Yankee fan! As for the dancing girls--how cool a job was that? To be young(someone mentioned that one turned 21 on the tour) and to be traveling around dancing. What memories they will have. And then there's Bryan,..well what I saw was no phoned in performance, there was a real joy in his singing,in realizing that even Roxy's oldest songs still have their power to touch people, even those who weren't even born when they were written. And I have seen enough concerts to detect fakery, and saw none here, and instead of "mugging",I participated in a playful celebration between performer and audience. The origins of music are lost in antiquity, and we don't need music to live(witness the Amish),but the purpose of live music was what you,Kamaya, and I,and all those others who were open to it enjoyed when we saw Roxy Music. They do rule. But damn, you have to get an Internet connection at home.New Zealand Police??!! - ----- Original Message ----- From: To: Sent: Monday, August 20, 2001 10:46 PM Subject: [AVALON] How I worshipped at the altar of Roxy... I have never bought or sold anything on eBay. I simply scan it occasionally for pictures. I too think it's wrong to get an autograph and then turn around and sell it. I would never part with any of my signed Roxy items. I've seen these autograph hounds. Some guy at a John Wetton concert had John sign 30 LPs! There was an autograph hunter at the Greek. He didn't even attend the concert, he just stood outside and tried to get autographs. He chased down Ferry and ran up to Rufus Wainright's car and stuck his pen and CD in the window. The autograph collector had to ask me which artists were in Roxy Music. It's pretty sad. They take pictures of the artists signing the item and then post the pictures up at eBay. Tom, I have wondered whether TGPT's departure from RM/BF solo had anything to do with his *look* . Not exactly the perfect Roxy Music/Ferry *image*. Bryan seems to take control of how an entire project is presented - could it be that PT doesn't fit his idea of that image? If so, it would be shamefully shallow for BF to choose image over art; ie: the music. Whether BF's solo material or Roxy Music, Paul Thompson is the best man for the job.
