I think that the average music fan doesn't have the intelligence to appreciate a line like "Even Zarathustra, another time loser..." The fact that a certain amount of intelligence, instinctual, or learned, is required to go along with the Roxy ethic, tends to band Roxy fans together perhaps more tightly than fans of more popular bands. With many bands, the fans are fans of the music. And very enthused for "their" band. But they rarely rave about say...the lyrics, the style, the humour etc. Sure some do, but it isn't as common as the average Roxy discussion, where the lyrics and style changes are often discussed, with joy and humour. It is not up to an individual to police the list or to decide whether a thread is relevant, but obviously people have the right to state their views. The number of posts has increased considerably, this is due to increased list membership and the fact that Roxy are on tour. It'll be interesting to see how many posts we get when the tour finishes. Never really liked FYP (the song) until I saw Roxy do it live this year - thought it was a great and very clever way to end the gig. As far as "long solos" go, I thought that "My Only Love" was the most "stretched out" song. Aleks Make international calls for as low as $.04/minute with Yahoo! Anyone who appreciates great guitar work, would agree that Spedding's solo was one of the highlights of the show. No flailing about was necessary for Chris, he just let loose with a heartfelt solo. I wish they had let him come to the front a little more often. Too bad he turned down Mick Jagger's offer to join the Stones. on 8/20/01 9:24 AM, Aleks Kocan at aleks50@yahoo.com wrote: >As far as "long solos" go, I thought that "My Only Love" was the most "stretched out" song. ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 20 Aug 2001 10:07:41 -0700 (PDT) From: Aleks Kocan Subject: Re: [AVALON] interminable solos ??! - --- David Firmin wrote: > Anyone who appreciates great guitar work, would > agree that Spedding's solo was one of the highlights > of the show. > I wish they had let him come > to the front a little more often. Well David, mines a personal view, and yes I do appreciate great guitar work (maybe I'm just not an expert), but for me that particular song just went on and on and on. Phil's ending to "Ladytron" was great, the Violin solo at the end of "Out Of The Blue" was superb. I'm afraid that Spedding just didn't do it for me. I do agree with the fact that not letting him go towards the front of the stage didn't help though Suppose we'll just have to "agree to differ" - don't know if anyone else has got any views on Speddings Solos Aleks Make international calls for as low as $.04/minute with Yahoo! I can't think of anything which strikes me as absolute turd right now, but I've never seen the attraction of Sting's music, apart from the odd classic, like Every Breath You Take. Likewise, apart from a couple of songs like A Day In The Life and Eleanor Rigby, I'm not a Beatles fan. I've just never found the music exciting enough over time. Probably because Roxy's stuff often sounds so left-field that it can't be copied or made to sound dated. I often annoy myself with questions like this though, because often bands which strike me as immediately dull can do something which I find highly interesting. For example, I first heard Queen through my brother, who is a huge fan. I found the stream of stadium rock anthems a bit tiresome, then, before Mercury died, "Made in Heaven" was released, with Innuendo before that. I find the last album highly moving, and songs like I'm Going Slightly Mad from Innuendo are fab. So in conclusion, this question is damn difficult! Can anyone jog my memory of any really crap bands, because I think my broad love of music is making it hard for me to make decisions! ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 20 Aug 2001 19:15:59 +0100 From: "Ivor Canning" Subject: Re: [AVALON] Manzo in Guitarist Magazine Hullo ! Apologies if someone else has posted the info, but this month's (September issue) Guitarist magazine has an interview with the Impossible Guitarist himself. A few quotes of interest: "Of course, we had some differences to sort out. There's no manager now so we've had to confront problems directly, discuss them, make decisions together. There's tension, but that's partly why it's all working." "People coming to see us are surprised at the depth of the music; all they remembered was the image and a few singles like Avalon or Dance Away. But Roxy was never just that; there was another dimension; we were a great instrumental band too. To that end I led the move to bring Paul back in. He's one of the great British drummers, a real powerhouse." "As for me, once this is over I hope to put together another 801 show with some friends, maybe a couple of nights somewhere. It would be good if Brian Eno was there again." Discuss... S;^) Regards, Ivor. n.p. Freddie Mercury possessed one of the greatest voices in all of music. One band that is highly overrated and extremely boring is REM.
