I haven't seen *any* reviews of the Friday show at Wembley (22 June), although the Sunday one was reviewed (very favourably) in the Daily Mail two or so weeks later (I posted it to the list at the time). I was fortunate enough to be about 8 rows from the front on the Friday and didn't suffer any "misbehaviour" from those around me - although my niece commented on two people in front of her "who wouldn't shut up"! I think that being closer to the stage probably produced a completely different atmosphere - I wasn't aware of the audience being flat, as I felt part of the whole show, and certainly all around me were completely immersed in the band's performance. However, I thought the Sunday gig was better - ironically (or perhaps not so?) a much smaller audience, and a real end of (UK) tour - or so we thought at the time - sense of ejoyment from the band. There seemed to be far more interaction with the audience from Ferry in particular, but also from the others. My overwhelming feeling is still one of amazement - and, it has to be said, some relief - that Roxy 2001 were far, far better than I ever dared hope they would be. As a complete band I thought they excelled. I'm disappointed that the set lists haven't been chnaged as much as we were originally led to believe they might be - indeed, if anything they have been reduced, rather than added to or changed - so from that point of view there is a sense of a "package", but having seen 2 of the Wembley shows (plus one at Birmingham) I definitely feel that the performances were different each time. OK, perhaps not the "magical" quality of Ferry's ATGB shows - due largely, I think, to the unfortnuate decision to play the huge characterless arenas. But the style that is Roxy Music was there in abundance (and I was thrilled that they played so much of the early stuff) and it was a powerful and stunning performance by all. Cheers Jane (ever hopeful, but not putting any money on a new Ferry release in February!) _________________________________________________________________________ > The subliminable footer says: > To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: > unsubscribe avalon ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 18 Aug 2001 19:08:33 EDT From: KarenASwenson@aol.com Subject: [AVALON] What surrounds your Roxy? My somewhat belated contribution-- When our vinyl was organized before we moved, I beleive Roxy was bookended by Rossini (some popular overtures) and Todd Rundgren. Ferry I don't recall, and is hidden in dark basement recesses as I have good tapes or CDs of everything. Only my Roxy LPs are upstairs, after a clandestine taping marathon, sandwiched between a 20's unabridged dictionary and laserdisks of A Clockwork Orange, Rodrigo D: No Future (about young Colombian punks) and The Great Mouse Detective (yes we have kids). The CD's are always in the frequent rotation shelf, currently next to Portishead, My Scarlet Life, Fatboy Slim (sorry), Karma to Burn and yes...Abba--in Spanish! Speaking of laserdisks, there's been talk of Total Recall lately--that's my Holy Grail of LD's. Anyone reading this lucky enough to have one? If so, where did you find it? Personally I thought Phil's "Ladytron" solo was superb, but I also think that some other numbers did outstay their welcome (My Only Love being one of them). The only one that's available is an American DVD of some of the Musikladen footage. You can check out the details on Roxyrama. It's rely neat to see how many Todd Rundgren fans there are on this list. He's actually on TV just now in Scotland talking about his work on Bat Out Of Hell. I was lucky enough to see him at the Apollo in Glasgow back in '75 and then supporting Led Zep at Knebworth 2 in '79, he was outstanding on both occasions. A wizard, a true star? Definitely.
