Where is this blokes email address anyway. Some lovely wormy attachments might be nice? ;-) Or subscribe him to some lovely porn email "services" Hahaah. What a moron, he could have done a little advance work before writing that rubbish. ....I mistakenly sent a tome to the list some days back, forgot to break it up. But one point to me, was that unlike the Stones, who suck at this age, IMO, Roxy do not. And I think it is because even though Roxy is "art-rock," the complexity and creativity to their compositions and music, lend them (for me anyway) a jazz like credence. I really felt in a way like I was watching a great jazz band. And, Jazz and Blues masters have that luxury to play live till they die and no one says they are too old to still go out there. They are considered classics. In another day, Bryan would have been a crooner. He has a unique voice. Not strong, not opera, not whatever, but unique and worth a career as long as he wants. Intelligence, unique voice, original creativity....He deserves to continue on...as he is still doing interesting and worthwhile things. A lot of those new wave knocks offs, are not and have disapeared. As well they should. e _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 17 Aug 2001 23:20:42 +0100 From: "Chris Turner" Subject: Re: [AVALON] Si and Bry I've got an interview tape where the seriousness of Bryan's musings is somewhat undermined by the fact that he has his signature embroidered on the front of his sweatshirt. A huge thank you. You cannot know, you Brits and Euro's, what a giant joy it is for us Yanks to get to see this stuff. I remember reading about these appearances, from time to time, in various rock mags and the like, and realizing how much it sucked that Roxy were really nothing stateside, and that I would never get to see this stuff. Well, finally setting aside some time to view these, and I feel 19 again, just geeked out with joy. Bryan in heavy make up. Eno vamping. Etc. Etc. Last night I had the strangest dream. I dreamt I was at a Roxy Music concert. I had flown to Melbourne and there I was sitting with my friend in the second row (not as close to the centre as I would have liked) looking up at the stage. On stage were Bryan, Phil, Andy and Paul and with them a bunch of excellent musicians. Ten of them in all. And get this. You wonbt believe it. Chris Spedding was with them. Weird, huh? They kicked off with Remake-Remodel. At first I felt completely stunned. Then I was grinning, then laughing and by the time they moved into Streetlife my throat was constricting and the tears wouldnbt stop. Smiling, crying and quite gaga. Wiping away the tears. And it all felt so real. The drums were pulsing in my throat and through my whole body. Everything I could see and hear was so totally thrilling I couldnbt work out what to focus on. They were playing such familiar, beloved music. Some moments. Bryanbs smile. The music. Phil AND Chris. The music. Lucy giving her violin an absolute thrashing. The music. Concert images projected onto the backdrop. The music. Sarah wriggling, clapping and adding her voice here and there. The music. Andybs concentration and excellence. The music. In Every Dream Home A Heartache! Bryanbs changes of clothes. (You should have seen his silver suit.) Colinbs keyboard solo. All the solos. Meeting up with some Aussie Avalonians, especially Scotty and his terrific kids. We had been emailing each other since the dark days when it looked like the tour wouldnbt include Australia. When security told me to put my camera away, I had already taken 29 shots. Fair enough. By that time it was definitely time to dance. I had been getting a little wild in my chair so I moved to the side of the stage to dance to Both Ends Burning and when Virginia Plain started I managed to get to the front of the stage. Right in front of Bryan. It was wonderful to witness his delighted grin when we all yelled Virginia Plain. And then I was going crazy over Love is The Drug and Do The Strand. And then the tears started again and I REALLY couldnbt help it. I was so emotional and simply overwhelmed. I wrecked my voice by yelling and screaming my approval for every song. My hands hurt from clapping. During FYP, two idiots climbed onto the stage and grabbed Bryan around the waist from either side. He looked to his right for help. None came. He looked to his left. No help there. Eventually the nuisances were removed but they nearly ruined the last song for us all. Including Bryan. The concert was coming to an end and I couldnbt do anything to stop it finishing so I just waved goodbye to each of them as one by one my heroes left my dream. When the concert was all over and most of the audience had left, one of the mixing desk guys gave me a dated set list for a souvenir. Proving the old adage bIf you donbt ask, you donbt get.b So what did I learn from this crazy dream? Well for starters there is definitely not enough screaming, yelling, crying or dancing in my life. Ibll have to fix that. BTW Thank you to all the worldbs Avalonians for their contribution to the most incredible lead up to this concert. From the first time the tour was mentioned on the list and on through all the months since, I felt myself getting more and more excited. You all helped to make it such a magic experience for me. ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 17 Aug 2001 21:20:38 -0400 From: "Tim Kendrick" Subject: Re: [AVALON] NP >>The sound quality, besides being subjective, is really secondary. Roxys decision to dig deep from their earlier recordings was such a plus. I had seen them in 1980 which was a great show (opening with "The Bogus Man" if memory serves) but was heavy on the Flesh and Blood material. The venue in Adelaide is an all seater with a 3-4 metre space between stage and seats. Most of the night the security folks prevented people from getting close to the stage to bogey and/or boogie (from what I can pick up on the Brisbane show the security nannying was a similar issue). However about 20 or so people got through on the Andy McKay side of the stage during "Love is the Drug" (I tried but I could not find a way). Later on someone seemed to have given the message to security to ease up so my wife and I managed to enjoy the last 6 or so songs up close and amongst a throng of dancing cheering fans. Roxy seemed to respond to this and the last part of the show had a lot of energy. I thought "For Your Pleasure " was a great way to end the show. I noted with interest that the crowd was mainly "people who remember the 70's" shall we say (I am 42) but there were pockets of very young people looking very Neo-Glam (this is a phrase I think have just made up. You heard it here first folks. Maybe I'll get royalty cheques when Neo-Glam bands sprout up around the globe). I left the show truly happy having been involved in a night that could only have been made possible by one amazing band. Omitting "Mother of Pearl" left a hole mind you and I am jealous of those who saw the earlier shows that had "If there is Something" in the set. Still' there's always the next tour. Ian Mitchell P.S. I haven't written for a while but I read the digests. Great to see some young blood writing in. Once you've had Roxy you'll never look back baby. Pardon if this comes twice, I've got something funny with my email account... Greetings, my fine young dandies. Today's off-topic up-date is that my Yes offer is now closed. Look for two or three other Avalonians to offer it back up to the list shortly... As for BFR: Well, I also follow String Cheese Incident, they have a vibrant list-server community, and someone started a thread called BNR - Billy Nershi Rules (he's their acoustic guitarist and sort-of lead figure...) So soon there were lots of top ten lists of why Billy Nershi Rules. So, trying a new thread, Bryan Ferry Rules! Why? Let me list some... - -- It's the white dinner jacket, stupid! - -- Paved the way for Eno AND Susie Sioux, apparently. - -- Classiest act to come out of Europe in the 20th C... Who else records durable pop songs with lyrics in English, French, and Latin! - -- Still stops on the way out after a gig to sign autographs for fans, and will have a drink or three with them too... - -- Hey, the plane DIDN'T crash, see what I mean! etc.... c'mon, it worked on the other list, I never said I was particularly funny. But after exposing you all to Deadhead / Taper / Bootleg educations, I thought I might try to talk about Roxy Music here for a minute... :+)} Your turn?
