She's a Brisbane act recently signed to Warners. She played with a 3 piece band (guitar, bass and drums). In Brisbane, she came on at 8pm, finished at 8.30pm; Roxy started at 9pm. She has two singles out presently ("Stay" and "Brave"). Personally, I was lukewarm, although it's just a matter of taste - the lady I was with knew the singles and was thrilled to see her live. She's certainly good looking and, er, well-endowed. I found a web page about her at http://www.warnermusic.com.au/artists/page.asp?artistid=1004 . It includes a tour schedule which looks suspiciously like Roxy's, suggesting that she'll be opening for them at all the Australian gigs. Good to see Roxy supporting local talent. Blame it on my older brothers who used to play the FYP album and their collection of Roxy/Ferry, Bowie and T.Rex singles to send me off to sleep. A few years later they were keeping me awake with northern soul, Sex Pistols and The Stranglers and encouraging me to swear!!! When they left home I inherited the Roxy and Bowie stuff (kept in a biscuit tin!) and picked up where they left off and have kept up with it ever since, plus going back and plugging the gaps. By the time I was 11 I had all the Roxy and Ferry UK releases to date, singles and albums (that was 1984) and well on my way with my Bowie collection. So there! Shirelles - Will You Love Me Tomorrow ("one of my very favorite songs of all time"). Rolling Stones - Ruby Tuesday ("most people seem to think of them as crash-bang-whallop merchants"). Stevie Wonder - I Believe I've Fallen In Love Little Leaf River ("the complete musician"). I didn't even know that I had this tape! A furthe Bowie comment, when he selected tracks for his show (which was two hours compared to Bryan's one), he chose two Roxy tracks (2 H.B. and For Your Pleasure) and also spoke fondly of Ronnie Spector (he played Try Some, Buy Some). As it seems, I dimly remember the damaged red/pink (?) label of my father's "Manifesto" LP when I was four. Roxy have been my favourite band since about 87/88 and will be forever. I didn't go to Ferry's 88/89 tour because I thought, well I'm too young for this. Again, how wretched can you be. I also did not buy the limited Australian Bete Noire 2 LP edition because I thought well I already have got the album. Again, how... okok. Blummin' eck! I've just found an even older tape from 21 Apri l 1974 - My Top 12, Bryan picking tunes with Brian Matthew hosting... it's very fuzzy and runs at the wrong speed so I've had to drag out the old slimline portable cassette machine (the ones that look like housebricks with built-in speakers, I've had it 20 years so I'm surprised it still works...) but it's the only thing that makes it audible, but there's tons of dust coming out of the speaker! YACK! Lot's of very in-depth chat about recently launched solo career, early musical influence (first record bought Ken Collier's Jazzmen 'Going Home'), life at university, moving to London in 1968 and learning to play piano and write songs, recording of Another Time, Another Place (part way through at this stage), modern production values, how Roxy formed, Ferry sharing his birthday with George Gershwhin, the versatility of the saxophone, English music vs. American music in the 60s, songwriting, forthcoming Roxy tour of the USA... Tina Turner - River Deep Mountain High Smokey Robinson - The Love I Saw In You Was Just A Mirage Rolling Stones - We Love You Bob Dylan - Like A Rolling Stone (deep discussion of Dylan ensues) Billie Holiday - As Time Goes By Beatles - A Day In The Life Tornados - Telstar ("a certain magic quality that I can't really define") Shirelles - Will You Love Me Tomorrow ("possibly my favorite record of all time"). Charlie Parker - Embracable You Derek & The Dominoes - Layla (piano part) (Ferry talks about Clapton being the greatest British musician) Percy Sledge - When A Man Loves A Woman Staple Singers - Respect Yourself Because of the nasty quality it's quite difficult to make out what they're saying, so some of the above details might be wrong (like names and song titles) but I think you get the idea. Now I just need to clean up the dust! Also, Phil Judd (Split Enz) was checking out the Roxy photo album and he said that Phil Manzanera used that same Red Firebird guitar in the mid-70s when they recorded the Split Enz albums. That would be cool if Judd and Manzo could meet up in Melbourne. I am 41 and got into Roxy around Country Life. That was after someone lent me FYP which I have to say at the age of 14 changed my musical outlook. Before that I was into ELP, Yes, Genesis. Bought CL when it came out and threw the prog rock out. I can however remember seeing VP on TOTP which just blew me away. Since then its been Roxy, Roxy, Roxy, a bit of Bowie dance stuff etc etc etc.. I've always preferred the Roxy as a group to the solo stuff. My only other real musical joy is Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys. Of my family, only my Mum aged 81 likes the band.
