I'm convinced it's payback, some kind of cruel karma. My job, as you might assume, comes equipped with that most sought-after of fanboy perks _ free concert tickets. Whatever I want to review (repeat: review), I can make arrangements through publicists and promoters to see. With few exceptions _ Madonna won't be easy _ tickets will be waiting for me at will call. Is this unethical? I think it is if the writer lacks integrity and the commitment to voice his or her opinion no matter who coughed up the entrance ducat. (By the way, I got locked out of the last Backstreet Boys concert because of that commitment. Bought a ticket from a scalper instead.) Is it ideal? Not by a long shot. But like it or not, it is how the industry works. Suffice to say, no publication would be willing to pay exorbitant broker prices to gain access to every major event you might like to read about _ and if you enjoy seeing those cool pictures after the fact, you probably should accept this practice and trust us not to abuse it. Why I'm cursed, though, is this: At every show I go to anymore _ I'm not kidding, every show I attend _ I find myself sitting in front of someone who insists on talking. Incessantly. Loudly. Stupidly. I'm well aware I'm not going to get pity from you. Not to rub it in, but I haven't had to hassle with random wristbands or busy signals or Internet traffic clogs or skyrocketing ticket prices since 1995. You probably dealt with at least one of those irritations sometime this summer. But I know I'm not alone in my frustration with chatterboxes _ indeed, I would think your frustration would be more intense. If I had paid $100-plus to see one of the hottest shows of the year, only to have it ruined by someone who wouldn't shut the hell up, I'd go ballistic. I don't, because of guilt _ I didn't pay, thus I should sit quietly and make do. Last Monday night at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles, though, I almost lost it. The show: Roxy Music and Rufus Wainwright. Rufus delivered a fine set, by the way, though it largely fell on deaf ears. Five minutes into it, in fact, the two ladies behind me decided to exchange verbal theses on the new patient's bill of rights. Or something to that effect. I really have no idea what they were talking about. I tried to ignore them. No such luck. So they marred Rufus. OK, disappointing. But he's the opener. That's rude, but it's to be expected these days. Then they talked through most of Roxy's set. Things got quiet, they yakked. Things got loud, they tried to yak over it. And with no consideration toward anyone who might actually be listening to what's on stage. This happens everywhere I go, no matter whether the show is noisy and unruly or hushed and calm. It happened when I saw Dave Matthews a few years back at the Pantages Theatre in Hollywood _ an acoustic gig, mind you, packed with rabid fans, who you'd think would savor every note in utter silence. Wrong. They talked and talked and talked, dropping their conversations only when they decided to sing along. Why does this happen? Have we lost all sense of etiquette? Of respect, not just toward one another but toward the performer? Look, I know it's only rock "n' roll, and I'm not asking anyone to tone down their enthusiasm. Sing along, shout yourself hoarse, throw your hands in the air and wave "em like you just don't care, whatever. But _ nattering mom-speak coming on _ if you're going to have a conversation, couldn't you do the rest of us a favor and take it outside? Or here's a novel idea: WHISPER! Y'all got ears, right? Put your freakin' mouths to "em and stop talking so loudly everyone knows your business. After all, I didn't plunk down my hard-earned money to listen to you ... Wait, wait. I know. Don't remind me. ___ 10 SONGS "World Shut Your Mouth," Julian Cope (1984) _ Says it all, really. "You Talk Too Much," Run-D.M.C. (1985) _ You never shut up. It's only talk. "I Don't Want to Talk About It," Rod Stewart (1975) _ Everything But the Girl did a fine version, too. "Talk of the Town," the Pretenders (1981) _ Ever notice whenever these incessant yakkers go at it, they're always talking about something that happened at work that day? As if anyone cares? "Talking "Bout a Revolution," Tracy Chapman (1988) _ Sounds like a whisper. "Words," the Monkees (1967) _ Spoken to help nobody but you. "Enjoy the Silence," Depeche Mode (1990) _ Words like violence break the silence. 'Ferry and Spedding' is Italian, made by the Welfare Pig label, the same label as the double CD Out of the Blue' of the 1983 NYC concert. I'll try and find the URL for the Italian seller. He had about six commercial boots at about six dollars each. 'Brian Ferry Live USA' (can't believe that spelling) is German I think, and was released on the Live and Alive label on both CD and cassette versions. This is the most common version. I bought it about a year ago from big CD retailer www.funrecords.de One oversight from my cover version research - I think Ferry did a Beatles' cover on occasion during the 1977 solo tour. Simon will confirm I'm sure. Quiz: Top marks for any anorak who can tell me the other Holland/Dozier/Holland song Ferry has covered! Chris - ----- Original Message ----- From: "M.M.K." The clip of Ladytron where the announcer -- he's the guy from Hitchhiker's Guide who tells Arthur Dent how little damage his bulldozer will suffer rolling over Arthur, I think -- gets the name of the song and its singer wrong... what program is that, and why did they let such bozos host it? The Prog was 'Full House' broadcast on the BBC, from November 1972. It was meant to be an 'arty showcase' - featuring new bands etc... The full versions of all 3 songs Broadcast that night - - being 'The Bogus Man part 2 (later to become Grey Lagoons), For Your Pleasure, and Ladytron, are on the Avalonia Video 'Penthouse Perfection'.
