Richard Thompson... I've been alternating Roxy Music and Richard Thompson with a furious pitch of late. Richard's latest compilation is a great starting point for those unfamiliar with this master. Not knowing Richard (and Linda) is akin to the average person on the street who responds, Roxy Music? What kind of music is that? And, you know, there's always >Richard Thompson..... >Andrew in Chicago Mmmmmmm...not opera really, because for the most part most of that stuff has never really grabbed my interest(the human "themes" are universal for sure, but nonetheless I don't really identify with it). World Music has a little bit of appeal to me(how does stuff fall into that definition anyways? Seeing as we all live on this world, isn't all music "world music?" Or is it pop music from countries that inherently "Western?"). I've heard good things about the Afro-Celt Sound System(more interested in the Afro part. Celtic stuff, by and large, irritates me, especially since so many people in the U.S., ever since "Braveheart" put on heirs like they're the son of the Great Druid or some shit, and well, it's been shoved down my throat quite a bit, no disrespect to people who are or identify with that culture). There's also quite a famous Nigerian drummer, who's name escapes me at the moment that many, many people were fond of. I had a friend from Eritrea who let me borrow tapes of his, but alas, ran into a dead-end putting names to the music. :( Any suggestions to go from? Thoughts, Manchester/Toronto Boots. I am Back from the Left Coast and saw my 5th and 6th show of the tour. I thought show number 2in L.A. was much better than #1, Bryan seemed to not have much energy the 1st night and his voice seemed like he was fighting a cold or maybe just the sound of venue. Night two was totally different. alot of energy good voice and full setlist. I noticed they came on a few minutes earlier than normal and thought to myself that we could get a bonus song. I was right as was stated in earlier posts. More limos the second night. Saw anjelica huston(sp) coming in. and saw many more that looked familiar but could not place. In my row was Anthony Keides(sp) of the RHChili Peppers & John Taylor. People next to me (transplanted from england now living in L.A.) knew Taylor. I was able to meet Colin Good the first night as he was walking by the soundboard before the opener and i met Zev Katz before show 2 outfront of the entrance. Saw Lucy but was unable to meet her. Does anyone have the extra songs that are on the manchester discs as full shows? The extra tracks were taken from somewhere can i get the full show from anyone? Toronto: I will get the video copied to send to someone who can dub it if anyone wants a copy. The audio is more of a B sound rather than B+ as i wrote earlier. Manchester is better sounding. That's it for now. Oops, I sub-edited myself into a trap there, and Colleen sprung it on me!! That sentence originally ran something like "Unlike Colleen who had a couple of disappointments, I did enjoy the one gig I've been to so far (Wembley 22nd June).... blah blah" but was then cut for brevity (most unlike me!). But wait, maybe there really is a Colleen impostor out there... watch out at Glasgow & Manchester!! You'll be able to suss her out because she won't be *absolutely* perfect (technically). I didn't go to the Wembly gig--that must have been an imposter Colleen ("perfect" technically) ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 10 Aug 2001 08:07:52 +0100 From: "Guy Lawley" Subject: RE: [AVALON] Thank you, Avalonia!(The live experience) Fair point Miles, but I was using Colleen as an example. I could be more critical of the Roxy live experience myself, but my point was that the imperfections of seeing the band in a venue with the atmosphere of a giant abattoir, in the company of drunken yahoos and with somewhat dodgy sound quality, were massively overcome by the positive vibe and the sheer quality of the set, etc etc. I was trying to use a contrast between Colleen's misgivings and my own more positive repsonse as a kind of shorthand. It didn't work. So now you get me rambling on. Lucky you. Why single out Colleen? Others who attended the same shows, including our venerable Reecey, concurred that the shows she saw were subpar.
