As expected, the reference to Roxy was very quick, probably no more than 7-10 seconds. The narrator talked about Roxy taking glam-rock and and adding a veneer of art school sophistication. The accompanying clip showed Eno in his "ostrich feathers at the shoulder outfit" singing into a mike (what song would THAT be?) and then showed the Cool Ruler in black sequin jacket and eyeliner singing "Virginia Plain" and camping it up for the camera. Then it moved on to Bowie. Dear all, before I die I write this letter, here are the secrets you must know... We all have different expections of live. Sometimes it's up, sometimes it's down. I missed my favorite Roxy Music concert in 1976 because I had never been to a rock concert in whole my life. Bryan Ferry the year after was my first. I liked the Roxy stuff better then his solo work, not being a fan of "In Your Mind". I was sad that they only did three Roxy songs, Love is the Drug, Casanova and Could it happen to me?, but I am glad I attended it. I saw three Roxy concerts in Stockholm 1979--82 and to be honest I remember the venues better then the concerts. They were good, but not outstanding. The 1976 concert I keep pestering you about is, together with the best concerts from the Avalon tour when they do "Like a Hurricane", my Roxy highlight. January 1976 Roxy Music are in good shape, the recording is excellent and they do all my favorite songs from the first five albums bar Dreamhome. I lived a few stops on the subway from where the 1976 concert was held, but I missed because of ignorance, being 16 at the time. Well, the next time is the best time we all know. Do I have any expectations for the upcoming concert in Copenhagen? No, not really. But I am gonna have a really, really good time. Oh Daniel, 'tis a pity you missed those earlier tours, I think Roxy were at their "Live Prime" on the Country Life tour. They were still happy to have drinks in the bar at their hotel with fans, easily approachable and still having FUN. By the Siren tour they were including solo stuff in the set, which is not a criticism, as at that time we all thought there would be another ROXY tour/album in '76, egos were growing and touring was taking it's toll. I was at the 2 Bingley Hall shows in Birmingham (UK) which were the final shows by Roxy Music in the UK until '79, and I for one will be happy if I only have to wait another 4 years until the next ones. I'm still in a stupor right now, so maybe I'll disclose some details later. Let's just say this: concert aftershow meet & greet and after that, THE PRIVATE PARTY There were less than 50 people there, most of which were the band and associates. Billy Corgan of Smashing Pumpkins (and lately, New Order) was there. Got individual pictures with Bryan, Phil, and Andy. Spoke at length with nearly everyone. Got a pic with all four dancers. From the night before, got a pic with Ms. Brown and Ms. Etienne. Bryan actually remembered me from when I met him on the ATGB tour. I frequented the Rumrunner for about two years, and a great time I had too! Loads of Roxy/Bowie etc, dressing up, and all under the influence of lemonade! We also went to the Holy City Zoo and the Hosteria wine bar( where we drank much Sangria... well it was cheap)! Those were the days! Best DJ'S were Richard and Nick Rhodes. Back on the 20th, god willing. Tired of music not living up to my expectations of artistry, style, skill, and well...fun. The tour's left North America, and when Roxy's going to be back is an unknown factor. There's a lot of young bands out there, but they don't seem to possess that "it" factor. Bands like Radiohead are up there in the artistry deparment, but aren't anything that I would call "fun."* I'm relatively young(22), and left with the feeling of "Where do I go from here?" Argh. It's thirty years on when a young fella with little music training decided to put together a band when convential wisdom says he should have failed. There isn't that feeling of spontenaiety. Even when new, raw, bands start out they still seem to seek out to align themselves with musical "boxes." Bands that mix various music types seem to only take the window dressing and pass that off as "eclecticism" without getting behind why things sounded the way they did. I feel like the party's left town, but I'm still standing in the venue asking, "Now what do we do?" Le sigh. Sorry to eat up bandwidth folks, just had to vent a bit to some folks who(I hope) would understand. On that note, any Avalonians in Seattle want to put together a band and storm Faux Bang? There isn't that feeling of spontenaiety. Even when new, raw, bands > start out they still seem to seek out to align themselves with musical > "boxes." Sadly the modern bands seem to be either pretentious or just plain dull. What gets defined as young and raw tends to be a cover for people who are just very, very bad musicians. The one trait that they all seem to possess is that they take themselves far too seriously. > I feel like the party's left town, but I'm > still standing in the venue asking, "Now what do we do?" I felt that way in '82 at the end of the UK Avalon tour, there was open talk amongst the fans of a split in the band and while the shows were enjoyable, they lacked the spark that was the essence of what Roxy had been. At least from this tour a lot of fans who weren't as luck as I had been to see Roxy at their best have had some sort of glimse of just how exciting they realy were. If somebody had said to me at the start of '99 that I would see Ferry twice that year, five times the next year and Roxy three times in 2001 I would have asked for some of what they had been drinking. "Now what do we do?" Hope. Hope that this is not the final chapter in the Roxy saga and that the response that they've had from the fans will spur them on to more shows and some studio output. Failing that hope that Ferry won't decide that he's had enough of touring, he's done a lot of shows in the last couple of years. I don't know what will happen any more then the next fan, but I am going to savour every last drop while I can. I had just entered my teens when Roxy first appeared and now in my fourties I still get the same excitment from their records as when I first heard them 29 years ago. Long live Roxy, and take it from me enjoy it while you can. Tom. np.
