The highlight of my night was maneuvering a rare experience; a picture of Andy and Paul together smiling. When's the last time we've seen that? I'll try and get my pictures posted in the next week or so. Andy wolfed down more meatballs. Paul was as gracious as ever. There were so many people at the after-show party that you couldn't even walk. I saw Anjelica Houston and got John Taylor's (Duran Duran) autograph for my wife. I also saw Danny Bonaduce and John C. This brings the art-rock group's compilation tally to four, assuming you count those that also spotlight leader Bryan Ferry's solo hits, and let's not even bother with the comprehensive 1995 box set "The Thrill of It All," which is available, as so many rarities are, only as an import. But longtime fans _ defined as anyone who owns more than 1982's classic chill-out "Avalon," now as much a staple of the affluent as a milestone of its era _ should note the telling selections for "The Best of Roxy Music." Though no Roxy collection worth a dime should be without assaultive oddities like "Virginia Plain" and "Do the Strand," and they're included, this set seems to disproportionately favor the band's later, synth-smoothie years, when its adventurousness had been abandoned and immaculate plastic soul became its metier. Not that there's anything less-than-special about that period, and I love "Angel Eyes" and "Same Old Scene" as much as the next Ferry follower. It's just that the more years tumble by, the more the memory of the earlier _ and arguably stronger _ Roxy Music tends to fade. Essentially there were two Roxy Musics _ the quirky, often cacophonic, glamour-tweaking experimentalists who turned rock on its ear, and the ultra-suave, jet-setting fashionistas they became. Both models remain fascinating, but they have distinct differences _ the former seemed to make reflexive statements of the decadent scene in which it was entrenched, the latter operated in a more detached manner, cleverly criticizing within catchy tunes. Put it down to changing times. When Roxy began, as androgynous glam-rock was on the rise and artists were beginning to use synthesizers to toy with form, the MO was anything goes. In that atmosphere, mingling Ferry's Brechtian drama and psychedelic pop with Brian Eno's moody soundscapes and Andy Mackay's honking saxophone followed some sort of crazy logic. By the end of the decade, with discotheques at their zenith and new wave waiting to break past their bouncers, such unsettling noise was most unwelcome. In between came Roxy's two-album peak, "Country Life" (1974) and "Siren" (1975), works that have stood the test of time, that are refreshingly tuneful yet retain a healthy dose of the eccentricity that bore them. By this point, Eno's trappings had been removed; he departed after 1973's "For Your Pleasure," and was better off exploring on his own. And though the offbeat bits weren't missing _ you still could hear Dracula-like vocal swoops and sturm und drang arrangements on cuts like "Whirlwind" and "If It Takes All Night" _ they had grown less jarring. Plus, Ferry's more banal side, as heard in odd covers whose artistic value is a matter of taste, had been relegated to his solo albums. What emerged, then, was sophisticated pop, an intellectualized, stimulating creation that could rock and groove yet cause thoughtful pause. It's a sound no one has replicated. So unique was the chemistry between Ferry, Mackay and guitarist Phil Manzanera at that point it's inconceivable anyone could. Between the two, "Siren" _ that's Jerry Hall on the cover, by the way _ is slightly more accomplished. In many ways it plays like an elegy to a glitz about to disappear, or at least mutate for a new generation of party people. From the opening irony of "Love Is the Drug" (a dour number, despite its celebrative finale) to the hopelessness of "Both Ends Burning" ("Avalon"-ish texturalism with bite) to the closing, aloof realization that "Just Another High" won't do, it's a sublimely scathing indictment of excessiveness in love and escapism _ and one that doesn't leave its authors unharmed. After it came the "End of the Line" _ literally. Roxy split for a time, and when it regrouped it wasn't the same _ enervated and empty, though intriguingly so. Perhaps it's not so strange that that version is best remembered _ and, considering recent set lists from their tour, most revived in spirit. This was what became a vehicle for Ferry's whims, disbanding only when he discovered he could get along just as well without it. But it leaves me wondering if he's at all interested in scouring his ornerier history. It would be nice to think they might recount their entire past during this nostalgia exercise. That new best-of, though, it isn't a hopeful sign. ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 8 Aug 2001 21:31:02 +0200 From: Daniel Atterbom Subject: Re: [AVALON] Marilyn Cole At 19.12 +0000 1-08-08, C. I'm still in a stupor right now, so maybe I'll disclose some details later. Billy Corgan of Smashing Pumpkins (and lately, New Order) was there. Got individual pictures with Bryan, Phil, and Andy. Spoke at length with nearly everyone. Got a pic with all four dancers. From the night before, got a pic with Ms. Brown and Ms. Etienne. Bryan actually remembered me from when I met him on the ATGB tour. That guy hates everyone. Except...] POP MUSIC REVIEW More Than This Roxy Nostalgia Bryan Ferry and others reunite on stage, performing with a passion that is as appealing today as it was back in the British bandbs heyday in the 1970s. By ROBERT HILBURN, Times Pop Music Critic B B B Reunion tours are generally exercises in denial. From the Sex Pistols to the latest reruns by the Who, you trade some dollars for some memoriesbor vice versa, in the band's case. Then you spend much of the evening trying to convince yourself that it's not all nostalgia, that the music is as vital as ever. B B B One reason the new Roxy Music tour is a rare reunion worth applauding is that you don't have to waste time on the nostalgia issue. The British band's music was joyously absorbing at the Greek Theatre, where it opened a two-night stand Monday, even if you didn't know the songs were all written before the band called it quits in the early '80s. B B B When Roxy Music surfaced in 1972, it was in the very large, mesmerizing shadowbat least in this countrybof David Bowie, who dealt in outwardly similar glam-rock sensibilities, but with a stronger stage persona and a generally greater feel for radio-friendly tunes. B B B Looking beyond the group's fondness for colorful, quirky fashions and glamorous album graphics, you saw that Roxy Music wasn't truly glam at all, musically-speaking. The bandbwhose original lineup included pop auteur Brian Enobwas one of the pioneering ventures into art-rock. B B B Unlike the stark, street realism of the Velvet Underground, Roxy Music reflected onstage in the '70s some of the teasing theatrical verve of English music hall. But the music itself was smart, experimental and challengingban influence, to varying degrees, on such equally cerebral outfits as Talking Heads and Radiohead. B B B There were certainly some memories tickled Monday at the Greek. B B B "We love you, Bryan!" one fan screamed as Bryan Ferry, the still-trim singer with the suave, matinee-idol persona intact at 55, took the stage wearing a typically stylish black metallic jacket and pants. B B B In the '70s, Ferry often adopted the world-weary stance of a helpless romantic, someone who knew the dice of romance were loaded but couldn't help rolling them. B B B "Fallen leaves in the night/Who can say where they're blowing," Ferry sang in "More Than This," a tune on Roxy Music's most popular U.S. album, 1982's "Avalon." The group didn't perform that song Monday, but it did reflect on the uncertain nature of relationships in several other key tunes in the 90-minute set. B B B To his credit, Ferry didn't try to duplicate the original, tormented aura of such tunes as "Love Is the Drug" and "Both Ends Burning." Instead, he looked back at the themes with the comfort and distance of someone who has had a few winning rolls of those dice. B B B Changing jackets to match the mood of the songs (a white dinner outfit here, silver lamC) there), Ferry remained the group's visual focus, and he has a deceptive emotional range as a singer. He injects some tunes with the exaggerated mannerism you might expect from an ultra-sensitive chanteuse, while he turns elsewhere to the deep-voiced somberness of Leonard Cohen. B B B But Roxy Music is far from a one-man show. Eno, who left the group in the early '70s, isn't back, but Ferry is joined on the tour by longtime Roxy hands Phil Manzanera on guitar, Andy Mackay on saxophone and Paul Thompson on drumsbas well as a vanload of support musicians, singers and even dancers. B B B Manzanera and Mackay are especially aggressive players who step into the spotlight for dynamic solos at unexpected times, and Thompson energizes the show with explosive flurries. Indeed, their musicianship is as much at the heart of Roxy's continuing punch as Ferry's frontman command. B B B In some ways, the lack of radio airplay the first time around helps Roxy Music now. Some bands are burdened on reunion tours by songs that were so popular that they became embedded in the cultural framework of the time, making it hard not to think of them in an earlier context. B B B Roxy Music further sidesteps the "greatest hits" syndrome by drawing material from various albums rather than concentrating on tunes from the most popular ones. The result was juxtapositions as stark as their version of John Lennon's "Jealous Guy" with the party bounce of "Dance Away" and "Do the Strand." Adding to the punch of the latter two songs were, respectively, dancers dressed as go-go girls and Vegas chorus girls. B B B The band also showed good taste in selecting Rufus Wainwright as its opening act. He's a breathtakingly gifted young singer-songwriter who also deals in the world of romantic obsession. His performance Monday, however, was more workmanlike than inspired, as if he has so much confidence in his material that all he needs to do is wheel it out. B B B That's certainly not something that can be said about Roxy Music. Even after all this time, the band played each song with the passion and commitment of musicians who want you to feel every ounce of emotion. ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 8 Aug 2001 22:39:30 -0500 From: "Judy Kaufman" Subject: Re: [AVALON] Last Night Was The Greatest Night of My Life Rickmond Wong tantalized us with: > Last night, 8/7, was the greatest night of my life. > It started at the Greek theatre and ended with me > dancing with Bryan Was it a slow dance?
