Jackson" Subject: [AVALON] Wow. Concord was amazing. Having never seen any previous incarnation of Roxy live (I was 17 when they broke up), I hesitate to make any unqualified statements about how wonderful the show was. I thought I was going to cry a couple of times during the show, though. Those albums have been such a part of my life for so long that hearing some of it done live was emotionally exhausting. I know how silly that sounds, and there's probably not much less appealing than seeing a fat, middle-aged man get misty over a rock band, but I couldn't help myself. BTW, is Lucy a great call for MVP or what? No offense to those of you who've seen the band with Eno or Eddie Jobson, but I was thrilled at the way she handled both their parts. Now the big question. Will this tour produce new material? This is the first time I've seen Bryan touring without new material to promote. On the way home I kept wondering how he feels about that. Was this just a one-off tour to harvest a few fanbucks for old time's sake or will the band consider recording now? I would absolutely love to see Roxy Music again next year as they perform the classics plus a generous selection of tracks from a new album. No matter what's in store for the future, tonight was a real treat. - -Rob ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 6 Aug 2001 10:51:14 +0200 From: "Stefan Thomsen" Subject: [AVALON] Tickets for Copenhagen WOW! I have been holding back (and having size posting issues) on what to add to the reviews that You, "Rockin' Rod," and Kelly have already done well (and the horrible misguided off-the-mark review in the Mpls. paper) since I don't want to be redundant. My contribution is on The Crowd. Overall is was a so-so crowd and very matter-of-fact - they were much too casual and seemed mainly just curious. Idiots would get up or arrive in the middle of songs to get their watered-down beers! (I wonder why some were there at all because there was NO advertising or hoopla in the Twin Cities - when folks asked us "why were we in town?" and --maybe-- "which concert?", they invariably replied "Roxy who?") I saw none of the 'dressed-up tight' and hard-core fans I saw at the 3 first concerts (i.e., Country Life @ The Guthrie, Bete Noire @ Northrop & Mamouna @ Orpheum) which treated and knew this Was An Event. This lackadaisical behavior showed in the early responses to the songs. I feel very few know (ha! or heard) the tinkling noises that began "Remake-Remodel" and the reaction of the crowd when they started into this still-fresh classic (hmm try to describe R-R better kids - three words or less, GO!) seemed stunned, as in 'what is this, then?' What? no "More Than This?" When "Ladytron" started, I really felt like a stranger in a strange land by the subdued folks around me. Shyte, I was pumping inside, all excited, telling the wannabee fan behind me what song it was (and LP # - he gave me that job all evening) and possibly making an utter phool of myself acting like I haven't seen them for 18 years. SIGH. It was fun though! I literally yelped & jumped up a foot following Lucy's Jobson-perfect solo in 'Out of the Blue,' forced myself to just dance in my seat so as not to totally embarrass my companions for a long while, and to find a weird compromise between sitting quietly or dancing in front of everybody (as debated elsewhere on this list). Both Ends Burning smoked (even tho' they dropped the last verse!)! Overall a very poignant ( I sadly feel this was/is their farewell tour )concert with a curiously curious crowd that never caught the significance of the last song's haunting "Tara Tara..." goodbye. Colleen, Everyone has their own views on each show. I've seen two shows on this current tour (Sheffield and Manchester) and quite frankly, for me, Manchester was far superior. Others thought ATGB was a better show than this one, I didn't. I've spoken to people who went to Sheffield and they thought it was great. However, it all depends what seat allocation you get, what the crowd is like etc.... It's all a personal thing. I don't think that you should regret going to the gigs. Maybe your standards are higher than the other reviewers or whatever, but the way I'd look at it is we've all had an unexpected opportunity to see the greatest band in the world. Quite frankly, I'd be happy if Bryan Ferry sang "Jealous Guy" in my garden shed, even though I'm sick of hearing that song. Aleks P.S Before anyone gets any ideas, my garden shed is not gig 50... Colleen, do you want a copy of the Stockholm 1976 show, one of the best recordings of the Jobson era Roxy Music, with the band in full swing? It is better then Glasgow 2001, I promise. The three Stockholm concerts I've seen, I missed that show, have not been as good. Life is unfair. But a happy pug can make one feel better, especially when one's life is going to the dogs. I'll think I go and talk to the dogs. They're always happy to see me when the missus is away. Speaking of that, I listened to my copy of Glasgow 2001 in the car late last week (thanks, Grant!), and must concur with Gene and others that the band is playing way, way too fast -- like Paul Thompson has a hot party to get to and is trying to herd the band offstage as quickly as he can. The slow songs are fast, the fast songs are even faster. Another less-than-inspired show to add to Colleen's litany of woe? later, Miles ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 06 Aug 2001 12:18:28 -0400 From: KB Porter Subject: Re: [AVALON] Censorship Oh, I quite agree with you, Ian Christ! Mr. Jones, would you mind sending the tickets to - what's that hacks name? :0) [ So I assume the experimental dentist has not sent you a ticket for the flight to the closing concert of the RM 2001 tour? Coincidence: I recently received some email from a writer who attempted to conceal his identity. No, this really is true! He included an executable attachment - as if I'd open it! Fancy that, a petty, grudge-ridden UKer who is a member of this list has tried to sabotage my pc! And to think he would succeed because he thinks I'm old and ineffective. Such a small, small person who intently tries to harm others. It's a small world, Jocelyn! That you say the conversation really happened there, well, that's not in dispute! I imagine similar conversations have been held in just about everyplace where the name 'Roxy Music/ Bryan Ferry' has been spoken. Ignorance knows no (national, gender, age, racial, etc.) boundaries - that is my point. I thought that was yours as well! Best wishes. A queue of us stood outside the cubicles trying not to wet ourselves. The thing that remained was the fact that one of these ladies actually thought that if you speak a language you are by definition that nationality. So that also makes Bry of Latin and German heritage and pretty much most people on this list bi (national and lingual that is, let's not start another one of THOSE threads). Er, I heard that conversation took place in the Ladies restroom after one of the Wimbley gigs!!!!! ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 06 Aug 2001 17:51:03 +0100 From: "Duncan Watkins" Subject: [AVALON] the good, the bad and the ugly further to discussion about enjoyment or not of concerts,i personally couldn't really care less how well or badly they all sing or play, how this performance compares with... its all about being there!,doing it all again, reliving the music etc,etc however: my experiences on this tour: gig 1 glasgow:sat on my own at the back(last minute decision to go)surrounded by people who wanted to hear 'dance away' and didn't like it when they didn't.i especially remember a couple sat in front of me he kept getting up to dance, his partner sat arms folded trying to stop him. gig 2 newcastle: spent the whole concert right at the front with a whole load of avalonians five foot from bryan ferry-quite enjoyed that one! gig3 birmingham: sat in quite good seats, however with three reluctant teenage children, youngest fell asleep half way through!couldn't see very much, everyone standing in front of us,still enjoyed the music and the reaction of the people around me. i enjoyed and wouldn't have missed each one in different ways 'being there' thats what counts! duncan _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 06 Aug 2001 19:33:30 +0000 From: "Tara Rogers" Subject: [AVALON] Vancouver show Okay, this show was quite possibly the highlight of my life. The band was in top form, they seemed to be having a good time even with such a small audience. We were an appreciative one, however. It was great to meet Bev and her hubbie Stewart (hope I'm spelling it right), Eric and his girlfriend, Ed and his wife from Holland, a few other people I never caught the names of. It was also wonderful meeting the Prince Of Happiness and his friend at the 4 Seasons earlier in the day. All of you guys were wonderful. Especially Stewart for grabbing me Bryan's water bottle (thank you for being tall). Highlights: Just the fact they walked out on-stage made me happy. Having the chance to sit with Bev throughout the show was great. My cousin who took over photo-taking because I couldn't take my eyes off Bryan (thanks, Linds!) Dreamhome-I've never been a huge fan of this song, but I have a newfound respect for it. Especially afer Bev nearly ripping my arms out of their sockets (kidding, Bev). It really rocked. MOP-my absolute fav Roxy song in the whole world, I was so happy when they played it. Gonna go with Bev about the silver suit. OH. MY. GOD. (the pics are great of him in it) I'll give Bev the 'boys will be boys will boys' moment as I met the entire band earlier in the day. I know, how gracious of me. *laugh* Do The Strand-When Bryan did the line 'the samba isn't your scene', he did the motion of the samba and it nearly floored me. FYP-that ending moved me. I was touched, I didn't want them to leave, but knew it was time. And they were saying my name. I'm so thankful to my mother for naming me one of the coolest names ever. Meeting the band, especially Bryan, was the highlight of a very long rainy day. Paul was surprised when I asked him for an autograph, maybe a picture (he declined on the pic, don't know why). But he was very down-to-earth, waited patiently for me to dig my Manifesto CD out of my purse, as well as my Sharpie. I didn't even know what to say to Bryan. He got out of the vehicle, there I was, CD in hand, camera in the other. I was just dumbstruck. He took my CD and the felt, signed it and I asked if I could take a picture, he said, "yes, as long as we hurry, I'm late for check". And guess who took the picture? PHIL. Phil, you take a great picture. I cried yesterday when I got the pictures back. All 3 of them were very kind, very nice, etc. Truly class acts. Thanks again to everyone I met, thanks to the 4 Seasons Hotel for accomodating us after the show, thanks to the roadie who put up with me on the way to Pacific Centre (another story for another day), thanks to the security guards who put up with me all afternoon at GM Place. All in all, a great memorable day.
