Hopefully Tara and Eman will report in as well b it was a pleasure meeting up with them and some Dutch Avalonians whose names I didnbt catch. Highlights: - - The small venue: like, maybe 9 rows on the floor! Half-arena setup, nowhere near sold out b which I thought would be a lowlight, but it turned out that the crowd made up in enthusiasm what they lacked in sheer numbers (maybe 3000 total?). The advantage was that it felt pretty intimate, for a show in an arena. - - Getting to sit in the first row! My original seats were at the end of row 4, which would have been fine, butb&before Roxy came on I saw someone who looked like Tara Rogers, with whom Ibd exchanged mail before the show, standing across the floor in the first row, so I went over to chat. Turned out the three gentlemen sitting next to her had moved back a few rows (yes, there were main floor seats unoccupied!) because b get this b they thought theybd be btoo closeb since the first row seats were literally 4-5 feet from the stage. Ibm sorry, but on my planet there is no such thing as btoo closeb to the stage for Roxy Music!! I spoke to the gents, they kindly offered me their seats, and I twisted my husbandbs arm ever so gently to get him to sit up front with me. The trepidation Ibd been feeling about the venue and the crowd vanished as it sunk in that Ibd be THAT CLOSE for the whole show! - - Getting Dream Home AND Mother of Pearl in the set list. Tara and I nearly deafened each other screaming when we recognized the opening notes of each one. - - Getting the set list! My dear hubby peeled it off of the floor by Bryanbs mike as we were heading out. He also grabbed his water bottle for Tara, and he took home one of Philbs guitar picks for himself. - - Musically, it was all quite amazing, but one of the highlights for me was Chris Speddingbs solo on My Only Love. The man has zero stage presence, but his solo was nothing short of sublime. Many other great solos as well, including several by Phil as he stood no more than 8 feet in front of us. I swear he caught my eye and smiled a few times! - - The silver suit. Oh. My. God. - - Editions of You. Ibd always liked it, but I have a whole new appreciation for it now. Especially after having Bryan sing bboys will be boys will be boysb right at us (Tara claims he sang to her, I claim he sang to meb&Ibm willing to call it a draw b: ). - - The sound: excellent mix, no technical difficulties, just perfect. Lowlights: - - Having the video operator and camera directly in front of us. Not a big deal since it only obscured some of the stage, but that part of the stage often housed Phil during solos. Luckily he (Phil) moved around a bit so we werenbt always blocked. - - The exceedingly drunk/stoned couple sitting next to me. The guy was somewhat reasonable b he at least seemed to be a big fan b but he still insisted on jumping up and yelling bYoubre the MANb while gesturing wildly at the stage after each number. His date, however, was so wasted that she kept sloshing over into my seat and trying to jump up and dance at inopportune moments. He did try to keep her under control most of the time, though, so it didnbt spoil my evening. Hardly! I was mostly just embarrassed to have people like them front and center where the band could see them. *sigh* - - Not getting around to the stage door soon enough to get autographs on the set list! All in all, an incredible evening. Rufus Wainwright was actually quite good b I own his first CD and am not particularly fond of it, but his second is much better and his live performance was not bad at all. And Roxy, wellb&I donbt have the superlatives. They were rested, engaged, and firing on all cylinders. Oh, and supposedly Sarah McLachlan was in the audience, but we didnbt see her. Ibve now seen David Byrne, Peter Gabriel, and Roxy Music from right in front of the stage this year. I may have to stop going to concerts now b it can only go downhill from hereb& b: - -bev (listening to the Manchester CD as I type thisb&) ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 05 Aug 2001 10:04:22 +0100 From: "SIMON GALLOWAY" Subject: Re: [AVALON] Concerto >From: Daniel Atterbom > > I like the Hammersmith Odeon recording. So sticking in A Song For Europe before Still falls the rain and Do The Strand at the end should be a piece of cake. I have said it before, and I'll say iy again, but do not Roxy Music follow King Crimson's example and release stuff from the vaults? Whole concerts from various tours and the whole Stockholm 1976 concert on DVD -- not just the hour that has been broadcast -- it's somewhere in the vaults at Swedish TV, not selling it to anyone but the performers. Dressed in a shiny black leather suit and white shirt, the rocker with movie star looks and persona led his audience through the play book that gave the band its otherworldly art rock aura at a time in the '70s when things had already gotten pretty weird. The nine-piece band, including original members sax and oboe player Andy Mackay, drummer Paul Thompson, and guitarist Phil Manzanera, are clearly cashing in on the nostalgia factor of a band that hasn't toured together in 18 years. Certainly nobody in the audience seemed to mind. This was a crowd that clung to every song like a favourite old sweater. The band dub way, way down to their retro riff-fuelled roots when they opened the set with blistering delivery of Re-make, Re-model from its 1972 debut. Some of the best moments included an ethereal blues interplay between Toronto guitarist Chris Spedding and singer Sarah Brown, Manzanera' elaborate guitar on Ladytron, the inclusion of Do the Strand and Love is the Drug, the hokey but effective drama(What the f*&^?!?!) of A Song For Europe, a lenthy violin and clarinet instrumental(India) (during which someone less appreciative yelled out, "Get down") and the numerous blonde clone go-go dancers on Both Ends Burning and Ferry's own, strangely fragile deliver on the classic Avalon. The song he captured best, however, was not a Roxy Music song but John Lennon's achingly bittersweet Jealous Guy(I seriously, seriously, SERIOUSLY disagree with this comment), a serene pinnacle to the 90-minute or so set. At 55, the blissful looking Ferry didn't disappoint in recapturing his James Bond of the rock world image, with frequent costume changes into yet more dashing semi-formal evening attire. The voice is intact, pretty much as you'd remember it from the glory days of his decade-plus career withe the band. There was an element of kitsch within the show as well, an agreed-upon understanding between band and audience that this was more about a pleasureable little trip to that inner rock 'n' roll child than anything to do with a band's natural evolution(quite liberating acutally). The Las Vegas show girls also added to the kitsch factor on Do the Strand. The feel-good vibe almost made up for a set that felt a bit brief, and of course, the omission of old favourite More Than This(no, no Virginia Plain was the old favourite that was missing). ... It was lovely meeting Tara in Vancouver, sorry for missing the rest of the Avalonians, my darling Ethel(another lurking Avalonian) and I had to run... :( Eric, mebbe meet up sometime in Seattle? The show was magnificent, the energy...just good energy from both sides of the band/audience relationship. In Every Dreamhome a Heartache made me explode out of my seat for its finale and I pulled out my best moves from my go-go dancing days. I felt elated when Bryan, looked right over at me, us locking gazes. :) Oh...only if was a longer set, and if two versus from Streetlife weren't dropped...still...an experience, a great, great experience for me and my darling. Peter T. and Maria walked us around the back-area of the Northrop Auditorium so we could see where wed want to meet afterwards to try and get a glimpse of the band. Wait! Theres Andy Mackay! He had big glasses on, a suit, and was stiffly walking up into the theater. Totally caught me off guard, and I didnt have anything for him to sign. Which seemed funny for me to notice, as I dont think Ive ever asked for an autograph before. So he got away safely inside. But there was Zev Katz having a smoke so I went up to him (he seemed a lot less scary to me than the original 4) and told him that the show last night was really great. He seemed surprised, but I said this type of thing doesnt exactly come around very often. Plus, I had missed them the first time around. Then the guy who was friends with Peter T. came up and asked who he was. Which I have to say made me wince a little. One show under my belt and I have turned into a complete RoxySnob! Then the guy asked what the energy level was like for tonight, and Zev said that was insider information. So I said wed do all we can to help the energy and feedback (a comment that would ultimately prove to be far beyond my control.) I decided it was time to scoot off, so I said goodbye and thanks again for the great show last night. Of course since Id gotten there early there were plenty of programs, plenty of t-shirts, and virtually no lines to wait in. The crowd seemed a teeny bit younger overall than last night, but still a very eclectic mix. I got to my seat and the guy next to me, from Minneapolis, said he was a big fan as well and seemed very excited. Although he said no radio stations in the area ever play Roxy Music. Perhaps my concerns were unfounded; there really are fans up here in Minnesota. The Show: First of all, the venue looked like the Lyric Opera House. Very posh and confined in comparison to the barn-like Allstate Arena of Chicago. We had 10th row near-center seats, so had a killer view. And the 4 people in front of us werent even there yet. Southdowns came on and the magic began. I was uncontainable of course, and shot up to cheer and dance. I think I was the only one. NOBODY else in front of me was even standing, let alone clapping or cheering. Finally when Bryan walked around from behind the piano to the front of the stage a few people yelled and stood up to cheer but very briefly. So I caved, and sat down but pretty much bounced in my seat trying to sort of dance anyway. My arms were raised clapping during most of the show; I had to somehow signal the band that the ENTIRE audience wasnt completely lame. The show was still great, one song less than last night as everyone has heard. And plenty of others have commented on the incredible solos from Phil, Lucy, and Chris. Finally I couldnt stop myself from rising to dance to BEB, I mean, there were go-go dancers on the stage for gods sake! So despite angry shouts of sit down behind me, I danced, my husband danced, and the guy next to him danced too. And a few others way in front of us. A couple was dancing in the aisle to Avalon and the guy got into a fight with security and was dragged out. I felt I really had to be on my best behavior after that. Finally, a few more of the audience members rose to their feet just before the encore break. I have to say I had some concerns as to whether or not Roxy would just decide to blow off the encore to get out earlier for a drink. This audience of lame-asses didn't deserve an encore! But alas, even though it wasnt quite earned, they did reappear to do a great encore. Some of the audience even kept standing. At that point I figured I wouldnt get kicked out, and shimmied around despite all the unpleasantries being said behind me. And it was over. And I was still on a high, wishing I had investigated getting tickets to the west coast shows. And although the mise-en-scene was completely different, it was still as amazing an experience as possible. As we were walking outside, my husband looked back and asked if they were giving stuff away for free at the t-shirt stand. It was mobbed! My guess was that many of the concertgoers probably didnt know who Roxy was going in, but were now hooked like the rest of us. Best yet to come... There was only a small group of people waiting, maybe a dozen or so. Finally, I saw Phil inside the door, getting ready to exit, so I slinked around the group (they seemed a rather passive lot luckily) and got right up in front. And Phil started to walk out. The lone security guy said if they came to us it was okay, but we couldnt walk up any further. It reminded me a little of a kiddie zoo or something if the baby animals approach you, its okay, but no sudden movements. So I called to Phil, he looked at me sort of wondering if he knew me, and then indeed he came over! He stood right in front of me, and I think I told him it was a great show, and that last night in Chicago was really great too. He seemed surprised. I was having trouble thinking straight. The lady next to me asked for an autograph, but didnt have a pen. I had a Sharpie all ready, so handed it to Phil and he used it to sign all of the other autographs. That pen will soon be laminated. Someone in the crowd asked where Andy was, and I said he was the smart one and snuck around to the van while Phil was playing the decoy. And Phil laughed. He was very laid-back and took time to answer questions and sign the programs held in front of him. I looked back behind him and our Cool Ruler was walking past, looking over at the small crowd. Hmm, well it worked before. So I called to Bryan, and yes! He came over too! I think a muffled thank you or something came out of my mouth. I mentioned the last night in Chicago was great too line and he looked a little astonished but was busy signing programs. Some woman yelled to him that they had a friend in common, a Mary Ramsey, but that was the only conversation I caught. It was very quiet. I think most people were as starstuck as I. Bryan was wearing a cream linen jacket, and looked great but very, very pale. Someone else asked if they could shake his hand in lieu of an autograph. So Bryan began to shake peoples hands and then said he had to go. He shook mine quickly just before he left. My husband was at the back of the group holding out our digital camera and got some photos. So I wouldnt think it was some bizarre dream or something. Wow. Im still amazed that it really happened. Of course Ive thought of a million things to say since then. Oh well, Ill save them all for next years solo tour ;-) Final comment: Ive always been a Bryan-chick, but I have to say Phil was really a hottie too. I know, so profound. All for now; perhaps Ill soon get around to commenting on the Chicago show, my virgin Roxy experience as Will F. pointed out. Thanks for letting me share. Viva!
