Though we live in Miami, we were in the mid-west for my 20-year high school class reunion, which, fortunately corresponded with Roxy being in the general area (about 450 miles away, but close enough) It was sweltering hot, but inside the Northrup auditorium it was bearable. Maybe its a mid-western thing, but the dress code seemed to be khaki shorts, t-shirts and sandals...my wife and I refused to succumb to such fashion transgressions and dressed-up in spite of the heat. As for the show itself...awsome, basically-flawless, too many highlights to mention them all, but I got goosebumps many times, especially during Re-make / Re-model, Out of the Blue, and Heart Still Beating...also, the For Your Pleasure ending was very stylin'. The crowd in the balcony where we were seated was quite low-energy...could've been the heat, but I doubt it. One guy seated behind us responded with "finally!" when Avalon was played, and otherwise sat motionless the whole show and several people around us left before the encore... After the show we went to a downtown Minneapolis "boutique" hotel where we had gone for drinks the night before (Monday) and witnessed the distasteful spectacle of Destiny's Child arriving to an eager crowd of teenagers. We inquired with the waiter as to whether it was possible that Roxy Music were staying in the same hotel. He actually (allegedly) checked the guest register and said that nobody "under that name" (as if) was registered. The next night (Tuesday) after the Roxy show, we returned to the same hotel bar, not even necessarily anticipating a brush with Roxy, but to have a pleasant drink in any case. There was only one kinda drunk businessman at the bar, and that was it. Soon, we were joined by two well-dressed women who my wife recognized from the concert (by the outfits she says). We asked if they had been to the Roxy show, and they indeed had. We sat chatting for not more than a few minutes when, I swear, an unaccompanied gentleman bearing a strong resemblance to MR. BRYAN FERRY walks in the main door from outside. One of the women immediately approached him and began conversing, I was like "holy f**k!" it is Bryan Ferry! At the urging of my wife, I took pen and business card in hand and walked over, introduced myself, shook his hand, and told him that we had come from Miami to see the show. He smiled and graciously signed for me, mentioning that some people were likely to gather in the bar for drinks. I congratulated him on the show, and he disappeared into the hotel itself. A few minutes later Colin Good and Lucy Wilkins both came to the bar and we exchanged pleasantries and congratulated them on the show...Paul Thompson was actually banging on the outside window to get Colin Good's attention, asking him where the entrance door to the hotel was located...Lucy Wilkins mentioned that she was feeling a bit under-the-weather... We never did see Phil Manzanera nor Andy McKay, nor did Bryan Ferry return to the bar, when we left, Colin Good and Paul Thompson remained at a table chatting with a couple of fans...they had the whole place to themselves What a great band...what cool, unpretentious people! That was our first Roxy show, as, believe it or not I've only been listening to BF for about four years, and Roxy for about two, and my wife for even less time..... IT'S ALL GOOD!!! ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 4 Aug 2001 21:28:05 +0200 From: "jimbo" Subject: Re: [AVALON] Rik Kenton great fan of early Simple Minds ? Brief Report from the Vancouver Friday Night Gig. First, let me say, that for someone that was always too poor (a college student, a starving artists, or a poor wage earner!), on the wrong side of the world Stateside), wrong side of the country, or something, to get to as many Roxy or Bryan Ferry concerts as I coveted... Things worked out. I had been angling for a contact, or connection, to get seats in the first 5 rows, since before the tickets went on sale for any of the shows. I tried contacts in high places (Hollywood) contacts in management (Ticketmaster).... No go. No luck. Because there was little label support, no support of a new LP/CD, no promotions etc., on this tour... No one could come up with anything. We got decent seats in May, after waiting for all our contacts to suceed or fail. I had decided that come hell or high water (or spending lots of cash) I would get the seats I coveted. Now, I have to say that I blame any number of the list for this pigs to the trough mentality (sorry, horrible analogie)... Let's just say "listening," reading all the reports here of the Euro-Avalonians and others scoring great seats last summer, and in late 99... I wanted to finally, for once, have great seats for a band I cared about. Sure, I'd been up front, even backstage for other artists. But nothing I would call as important to me as Roxy Music. Long story short, I decided to leave it to fate, I started calling ticket brokers in Vancouver (from Seattle) on Monday, kept calling, playing the game, and late on Thursday connected with a co., that had just recently come into a block of front row seats... And what seats they were. After much negiotiating I got a price far lower than any of the other brokers offered....and, after being told I had seats that were (right center), the gent delivered the tickets, only to break the news to me, that the front row had 50 seats across......and I actually had seats 24-25. Dead center in the middle....Right below the Cool Ruler. Of course I did not believe this, and was prepared to be told there was a mistake, the tickets were fake, 'get out.' ...Until I got to the seats, and saw they were empty. It must be real. Not make believe. What dream have I woken up in? Is this 1972, or 30 years on? Could it happen to me? As a teaser...of a fuller report (probably the longest thing I will ever write!)... I felt the band was very energetic, rested up after a few days in Vancouver, very energetic, and in a good mood. The longest 105 minutes of my life. Who's says time flies when you are ecstatic? Oh, and as I had sent out mental energy for all week... It is a very good version of For Your Pleasure, I have not heard or seen a recording from Wembley october 1975 at various bootleg listings on the net. The highlight seems to be a stunning "For Your Pleasure," but it's incredibly neat how they arrange a new medley of "Do the Strand" into and out of "Editions of You." Funky Chick is the original and best known version. It was originally one of six high-quality vinyl LPs (others included Lou Reed and Patti Smith) released by the Swedish boot label Stoned before they were busted in the mid-70s. Under many other names and sleeves this has become a bootleg staple. Allegedly, the first CD issue was as Cruel Fate on the Australian Flat Records; this was later pirated -- with the same sleeve -- by the North Carolina-based Firefly. sentimental fool/the thrill of it all/love is the drug/mother of pearl/bittersweet/NIGHTINGALE/she sells/street life/out of the blue/WHIRLWIND/sea breezes/both ends burning/for your pleasure/diamond head/wild weekend/the "in" crowd/virginia plain/re-make/re-model/do the strand/editions of you/a hard rain's a-gonna fall NP Ain't That So, live London 1979 Daniel ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ End of avalon-digest V6 #355 **************************** ======================================================================== For further info, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: info avalon-digest
