Funny you should mention that Graham, we have long said we thought we should get a venue and have an end of tour party (although we were thinking of doing it in London, but there's no reason why there can't be end of tour parties all over Britain!) But if you knew how hard it was to organise getting RM/RM over for a gig (and the costs involved) you would surely know that's a no-go without at least 6 months notice! Just get a place, stick on the CD's and have a really good time. It sure as hell worked in Mustang Harry's. And to be honest, I think we'll all be running on empty (both emotionally and financially) by then to be able to arrange anything more elaborate. Frankly the whole bloomin' tour's been one long party! And as Reecey said to me, what are we going to do when all this is over. What do you think? Hello all, I'm back from an AA therapy (Avalon Anonymous) in Italy. The therapy didn't work so I worked my way through 1300 emails and now I still don't know if Bryan's is a blind homosexual. never mind, I'm not interested. Lying in the Sun I had the following idea: Isn't it a good idea to recreate all of Bryan's cover albums with the 'original' numbers. starting with TFT. a kind of " Bryan ferry uncovered". Original in this light means for me the first performer or the version that Bryan inspired. For example: are you lonesome tonight was first performed by Al Jolson but Ferry's version is inspired by Elvis so we put the Elvis version on the cd. Obvious I haven't got all the circa sixty numbers Bryan covered so I need the help of the Avalonions out there. I really loved to do it. My idea is that we work our way through each album instead of doing it all in once. Anyone who sent in a good quality original receives a free copy of the uncovered album. To cover the cost all the others pay a little bit extra for the cd. Before I start, I want to know if people are interested in such compilations and if there are people who will take the time to copy things and sent it to me. If it a yes, I will start next week with These Foolish things and will give the details which songs/artist I'm looking for. Assuming it can load and store on the hard drive and then allow me to burn cds from the hard drive, I hope to be able to contribute to the distribution end of the cd trees in the future. No more, "I can make some tape copies" although I can still do that too. Also, in my frequent hiatuses from the list I've been told that Kicki is no longer running the AVALON member site. Who is? I have a great picture of the pre-gig Detroit group that I'd like to upload and share. Also, since I'm apologizing up front let me just say that some of my thoughts are inconsistent or even in conflict with each other and that no matter what I say no ill will is meant towards anyone or anything that brought the unlikely and unexpected Roxy Music World Tour 2001 around. First off, as one of the older guys on the list I want to say that the crowd for this concert was old. I don't get out to too many concerts anymore, partially since there aren't that many bands that thrill me enough to do the logistics to get out and make the trek (since nobody comes to Charleston, WV). I looked around me and was very surprised at the age of the crowd, mid-30's and up, really more like mid-40's and up (that's my cohort). There were a few other kids around my son's age but a very noticeable gap from the 20-40 age range. The setlist with notes: Re-Make/Re-Model: Great set opener but where's Bryan? I'm looking downstage for him and can't find him even with the binoculars. Have seats way in the back corner of the pavillion and I CAN'T SEE HIM. Oh, there he is, on the other side of the curtain. Man, these seats are poor. Still, the intensity of the number says that these guys aren't coasting. Street Life: One of those great album openers, again sustaining the pace. Note to Lucy: On some of the boots from the EJ era he would fill that first break after the first two verses with infernal caterwauling on the violin and noisy is better. Hey, whose synthesizers are those? Man, they look old, like the kind of thing Keith Emerson used to drag around at the very beginning of ELP. Lucy uses them well though in the later part of the song so we don't miss Eno or Eddie. Ladytron: Early in the song I love how Manzanera and Spedding are playing paralell runs, reminds me of the Allman Brothers but as the song moves on it becomes the Phil Manzanera show and, ladies and gentlemen, he is ripping up the guitar strings. Fabulous solo building to an incredible crescendo and there it is, the first climax of the night. Heart Still Beating: Alright. We need to catch our breath. Bryan is in fine voice tonight. He's got much more range than I heard on the TOTP and Glasgow boots on the way up here. Frankly, his voice had sounded pretty thin and I was afraid he might be the weakest link but, no, he's got the pipes. They may not be as rich as 25-30 years ago but they'll do just fine. Out of the Blue: Of course, we already know that, barring catastrophe, this will be another set climax. Andy's oboe is so strong and Phil takes a fine lead but we're all waiting for "Wincey Wilkins," holding our breath as she hovers over the wah-wah pedal. Paul Thompson and Zev Katz are cooking on the bottom which is a crucial ingredient to setting off the violin solo and Lucy captures it note-perfect. The hair on the back of my neck stands up, I get misty-eyed and yell to my son, "She nailed it." And yet, here's the thing, while we are all happy to hear our favorites brought back to life, I can't help thinking, what if Lucy could do here own solo? You know, "Lucy, start at point A and end at point B but build this solo any way you want." Wouldn't that be fascinating to hear? Notwithstanding this heretical thought, I join the crowd as it goes wild. Song For Europe: Plenty for everybody, lots of dramatics for Bryan but at the end of it all, this is Andy's turn to show his chops and he does, turning in a magnificent solo at the end of the song. My Only Love: DIVINE INTEVENTION. Don't have much to say about this song since I was in transition. Angel Amy delivers on a once in a lifetime assurance. She and her husband and another couple have seats in the sixth row. Both ladies have persuaded their men to swap seats with Alec and me and we make the move to party central. I can't wipe the huge smile off my face as we move down front. The atmosphere is SO incredibly different. The front line of Phil, Bryan and Andy can't be more than 8 feet from me and I can see them so clearly, can see the byplay between them. It just feels different down here. Dream Home: This one's for Alec. It's the song he knows best. Calls it "The Barbie Doll" song. Knows the words and can't wait for Bryan to get to, "But you blew my mind." I've heard this song countless times but watching Bryan perform it really brings the underlying wryness and yet creepiness out vividly. That's enough for now. Part 2 later.
