King Crimson has a DVD like that and, while not used to the maximum possible extent by them, it whetted my appetite for something where each band member would have their own camera angle for the entire show. If Roxy can do that, bring it on! Arnie******I have the King Crimson DVD, and while the different angles is an interesting gimmick, I find that I soon tire of it and am content just to watch the thing from the primary angle. I also find it annoying about that DVD that they made it a flipper. I thought they should have put the entire concert on one side and the supplements on the other. Oh well. At least they have a decent concert on DVD!******** Watching the video monitors on the mixing desk at Boston I think it may be possible to have different camera angles. However I'm not sure that the shots were of consistenly high quality to have a choice on a DVD, (unless perhaps they'll take from all the shows?) I think probably they'll just use the best/most suitable shot.*****I suspect it will all come from one show, as that would be the cheapest to produce. Personally, I think it would be good for the bulk of it to be from one particularly good show, supplemented by extra songs that were done at other concerts but not at the primary show, seamlessly edited for the effect of one long concert. It wouldn't exactly be reality, but who cares?****** (Bearing in mind also, the abundance of extra features on the Grand Rex DVD).*****I hear that! We're lucky if we get any extras.******* There may also be a time factor involved where they'll want to get the product out as quickly as possible (Christmas?) and perhaps they'll think the extra features are not worth the extra time they'd take.****If we get this DVD by Christmas, we're probably also going to have to duck that falling asteroid.****** Date: Thu, 02 Aug 2001 13:56:44 -0500 From: Susan Stekel Subject: [AVALON] rather long Mpls review And finally: the crowd. At the time, I was horrified -- they were subdued, sitting through most of the show, responding with only average applause to spectacular moments like the solos or the energy of R/R and Ladytron. If I wish to be gracious, I might say they were exhausted by the heat of the day. But I don't wish to be gracious, so I'll proclaim them a bunch of clueless louts.*******They certainly don't sound like the Chicago crowd. At least the front rows of the Chicago audience were on their feet for most of it. And if Bryan is as near-sighted as someone alleged, he probably thought the whole place was dancing. ;-) The crowd was certainly noisy enough. I don't know why the MN crowd was subdued. If it was the heat, then it must have been awfully hot in MN that day. I drove up to Chicago from Champaign and spent about two and a half hours shopping at an outdoor mall, which absolutely drained me, drove another half hour to the Arena, killed an hour in the Target store next door, then pretty much crawled to my seat. Yet when the first notes of "Remake/Remodel" sounded, I was on my feet surging w/adrenaline, and stayed very excited for the rest of the show.****** _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 02 Aug 2001 19:14:23 EDT From: InterEireann@aol.com Subject: Re: [AVALON] Roxy in RC " strimples" Could you e mail me details of this shop in Jersey. the one that Reecey was referring to in the Village, I think I know it. ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 02 Aug 2001 20:06:55 -0400 From: David Neuhaus Subject: [AVALON] Record Stores in Manhattan If you're looking for records in NYC, here's a list of my haunts in the Village (as well as the one people are looking for in Hoboken). If you need more, I've attached a link to all the record stores in New York City (where I pulled the following shop descriptions from). My favorites are Rocks In Your Head and Second Coming Records (the former for new stuff/the latter for boots.) Happy Hunting! Dave N. http://www.arcmusic.org/html/popgeo/newyork/recordsalpha.html UndergroundTRAX, Inc. Basement Store 728 Washington Street Hoboken, NJ 07030 (201) 386-9494 (There used to be a store called Pier Platters in Hoboken also, but I think it's gone.) Bleecker Bob's 118 West 3rd Street between MacDougal and 6th Avenue (212) 475-9677 neighborhood: Manhattan: West Village Semi-institutional post-sixties punk/rock/metal store. Not a Top-40 kinda place. Amidst the mostly vinyl selection are assorted singles, boots, and collectibles, and a smattering of CSs and CDs. Hardcore, punk and ska wonderland. Some zines, tees and posters. Expect to pay tip-top dollar for things (recently $200 for 'No New York?'- $8 - $50 elsewhere). Hairy, sometimes surly staff who've been known to bark at you as soon as you walk in the door. John who works there is a good ARCpal and always donates time to help us with our record sales. Rocks In Your Head 157 Prince Street (212) 228-4557 neighborhood: Manhattan: Soho The original Soho record store. With a punk-rock hangover, they also stock the new, the unusual, the latest indie/underground releases on vinyl when available. Amidst well-organized bins with classifications like White Trash and Sleazy Listening, there's a fine assortment used vinyl. CDs are hard to go through cause their clumsily trapped in glass cases. Tees, related books, videos, mags and assorted promo-only packages, all courtesy of your host, Ira. St. Marks Sounds 20 St. Marks Place (212) 677-3444 neighborhood: Manhattan: East Village The main store, which once stood tall with its selection of new and used rock and alternative vinyl, is a real yawn. Pretty much new & used CDs these days, the good news is that new CDs hover at about $10. A good place to sell back what you're tired of. St. Marks Sounds CD Store 16 St. Marks Place (212) 677-2727 Mon-Thu, 12-10; Fri & Sat, 12-11; Sun, 12-9 neighborhood: Manhattan: East Village The CD store, small as it is, offers a broad selection of the latest digital offerings (at very good prices) and cassettes (that seem to be on their way out). The bulk of the store is used CDs. Mike rules the roost: watch him dance if you ask to hear something he likes. Most new releases here go for $9.99. One of our favorite places. Second Coming Records 235 Sullivan Street (between 3rd and Bleecker Streets) (212) 288-1313 neighborhood: Manhattan: West Village One side compact discs and tapes, the other vinyl. The LP section is well-organized and full of interesting rock from the past thirty years. Some items are priced at the collector's level, (pre-1987 Fall records at $30-ish, the Recommended re-issue of "Faust So Far", $40. ) but some deals here also, (1979s "Soldier-Talk" by the Red Crayola for $8) . Our reviewer bought the Faust. Ouch. Smash Compact Discs 17 St. Marks Place (between Second and Third Avenues) (212) 473-2200 7 days, 11-10 neighborhood: Manhattan: East Village Recommended more for its selection of used CDs than anything else. It does carry an interesting assortment of rarities, promos, bootlegs, etc. as well as a lot of imports, but its prices are a bit on the high end. I do recommend checking out the used record guy who's outside on the weekends for his collection of funk, rock, R&B and soul. Negotiate on the overpriced collectors' pieces above the register. Plastic. Golden Disc 239 Bleecker Street (212) 255-7899 neighborhood: Manhattan: West Village A varied stock of R&B, jazz, rock and soul from the fifties to the present, including a large selection of 45s, CDs and books. Revolver Records 45 West 8th Street (212) 982-6760 neighborhood: Manhattan: West Village As the name may indicate, there1s a lot of Beatle worship going on here, but that1s not all. Heavy on memorabilia and a good selection of fanzines and mags. Strictly rock, with an assortment of used vinyl. Lots of booksPeven sheet music to many rock albums. ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 02 Aug 2001 23:16:17 EDT From: InterEireann@aol.com Subject: Re: [AVALON] Record Stores in Manhattan "Second Coming" is where I was introduced to "bootleg" CDs nine years ago, when but a few days after U2's "Zoo TV" dates in Florida there were boots galore on sale. Now if Roxy have recorded three shows that include all the songs that they have performed so far on the tour, including ITIS, which now seems to have dissapeared forever. They could put all three shows on the disc and fans could program the dvd to make up their own shows, even a two & half hour show with EVERYTHING on it! in any order they like. I am aware that Bryan would be changing his suit between every song, but its a small price to pay. Also I would not mind if all the songs were taken from different performances, which could be listed in the index of the DVD.
