However I'm not sure that the shots were of consistenly high quality to have a choice on a DVD, (unless perhaps they'll take from all the shows?) I think probably they'll just use the best/most suitable shot. (Bearing in mind also, the abundance of extra features on the Grand Rex DVD). There may also be a time factor involved where they'll want to get the product out as quickly as possible (Christmas?) and perhaps they'll think the extra features are not worth the extra time they'd take. Actually it's interesting to think of the extra features that might be possible. For instance: Links to the original performance of a song? Comments about a song from the band members? I have lurked here (originally on the digest) since before ATGB and have suffered the serious slagging for my "other life" spent in front my computer reading the prattlings of you "bickering numbnuts" - I liked that one. Drawn deeper and deeper into dependency on my daily fix. I haven't felt the need to contribute - I don't have the quilted anorak of deepest chocolate brown with twin peaked hood that matches some on the list. Gosh some of you guys must have the belted variety! I've been happy enough just to eavesdrop. I have enjoyed the sense of community and shared passion and delight at (almost) all things Roxy / Ferry So having just turned forty and been converted to the faith in '73 I suppose my heart says 1 to 5 (good as it is 6 doesn't count) however I was just as thrilled when they reformed the first time. F+B was the soundtrack to the summer I met my wife and conjours up some special memories. She tells me that one of the first things I said to her was that Paul Thompson had broken his thumb! I'm sure I was too pissed to have planned this as some test of her suitability - but she did know who he was. It was also a spectacularly bad chat-up line. Picking up on a recent thread, I have enjoyed all the Roxy albums and most of the Ferry ones especially in the context of their time and continue to have a soft spot for them all. 1st, FYP and Siren are probably my faves but there are so many fabulous songs scattered across the rest. I have been equally fond of the Ferry solo stuff and played ATGB nearly every day for a year - it was just awesome. *** Heresy alert*** Mamouna, though, I have never managed to get into - complete crock of shit. Although I do grudgingly admit to having enjoyed Havana Moon on the ATGB tour. *** Major heresy alert *** And what is with Do The Strand - easily the weakest link on the otherwise perfect album. Its not that I don't like it - its just not special. Hang on whilst I don my fireproof suit - right, ignite your flame throwers. I waited for the recent tour announcement fully expecting it coincide with the family holiday in Florida Not quite that bad - Glasgow was the week before. This meant though that I couldn't do what the many others did and tour the UK. Only my hometown gig - but I did have row 2 seats right under my other hero Andy "no-neck" Mackay. Echoing some other comments of the time, I thought the sound was very poor. The choice of songs superb ( excepting the ommission of Dreamhome and Sentimental Fool), the event a triumph. All aboard for a nostaligic trip back in time with the soundtrack to my youth. I agree with those who said that Sarah Brown added nothing and that Chris Spedding was under-employed. I liked the dancing girls - very Roxy! I immediately felt like a complete heel for not having taken my 6 year old daughter to potentially the only chance to see my heros. She was caught up in the constant repetition of ATGB to the point where she can now sing along to them all - although she much prefers Bette Midler's big band version of Miss Otis. But she also liked the Roxy stuff being done at that time. Anyway she will be joining me in row 13 on September 29th (thanks to the totally crap organisation that meant I didn't get my tickets until the day after they had gone on sale). The only time I've met one of the band was when I went to talk to Phil M when he played a festival in Fife several years back. He was downright rude to me and a friend - so I'm not really all that keen to meet any of the others. I would rather they remained distant enough to think they were worthy of two days spent in the pissing rain of a Scottish summer. I have just bought a new house and will be moving on Sept 20th - well so what?. Has it just not totally trashed the cunning plan I had been hatching for Rotterdam. Roxy and Remake/Remodel on the one night. Thats what I call a night out! As an aside, I have been wondering since A Mad Affair if Simon Galloway's DAT picked up my awful singing. I had been standing far too close before I realised what was going on. Anyway now that I have well and truly delurked, here the delightful bit. Only a little idea.... If Sept 29th is the end of the tour - and even if its not - there is surely no better time and place for AMA II : The Thrill Of it All. I am not suggesting a lavish affair like the last one with its videos, raffles and memorabilia etc. Just a venue, a damn good band ( remake/remodel of course) and perhaps 200ish of the 8000 punters who will be at the SECC. Throw in a few mad Dutchmen - so long as they bring their band along - and you have the Avalon post tour blow-out! So what do you think, Avalonia? Is it a go-er? Is the band available? Would the Sultan of Strandpower, the Empressario of e-Roxy be up for it in his home town? Yes, you Mr Reece. A tall order to organise in a short time but there are a number of Glasgow-ish based Avalonians who could perhaps help. Glasgow has direct flights to many places including Amsterdam, Newark, Chicago, Toronto and all the London airports. The airport is only 10 minutes from the city and it beats the hell out of travelling to London. ( Unless you happen to be nearby) It is only 4 hours drive from Manchester and 2 1/2 from Newcastle. Folk from Edinburgh could even come ( I know you're out there). It could be fun. I await your opinions with interest. Meantime isn't it time for another night at the Tron, Glasgow Avalonians? There must be some good tour tales to tell and sore heids to cultivate. Best wishes to you all. Who knows, Sept 29th? It's a bit long, so cut to the Roxy bits if you wish: Preliminary comments: a sultry evening, to say the least, but lovely. We (fiance' Rich and I) met up with Pete Seely, Peter T. & wife Maria, and a friend of theirs (forgive my forgetting his name!) at the designated spot. It was wonderful to meet you all -- I only wish we could've met Rod L., Jim J., and Kelly W., who also travelled up. Sorry to have missed you! It was a truly fun meeting -- and it provided some insider knowledge from Pete S., who had gotten backstage at Chicago and met TGPT. Apparently, a flu bug and a bad piece of salmon were rampaging through the band. I hope Pete can share more upon his return, particularly since there was a chance he could get backstage at Mpls as well. Arriving at the show: Northrop Auditorium is situated on the green at the U of MN, so it provided a lovely setting for the crowd to mill about before going in. This included a duo of local musicians who were entertaining us with their own rendition of "Editions of You" supported by guitar, saxophone and -- yes -- a kazoo. It's not something I'd recommend. Rufus Wainright: I'm sure a tour like this is great for him in terms of exposure, but "loud" is not a good direction for him to go. His songs are all beautiful melodies, harmonies -- and the amps wiped out all subtlety. Sound quality was much better for Roxy, Thank God. And yes, Roxy: Wow. Peter T. has already provided the set list, so I'll summarize the highlights from my point of view. "Song for Europe" was positively magisterial. The Phil and Lucy solos were unworldly, as Rod has pointed out. The biggest surprise of the evening was "My Only Love" -- it caught me off guard, simply because others have seemed to dismiss this one. But it was a stunner, and Chris S's solo was riveting. My personal highlights: each of the For Your Pleasure pieces. Badgers truly couldn't compensate for another night with these boy-oy-oyz. Personal lowlights: the Avalon pieces. And it pains me to say that, because I unabashedly _love_ that album (no, no -- we've had that argument already). But I tend to listen to that album as a whole, and trying to recapture that mood live, and in an auditorium, just doesn't work. Thank God they have Yannick Etienne along -- it was a treat to hear her, and I agree with whoever declared that she "owns" Avalon. Having criticized those pieces, I should exempt Tara, as that one truly is a wonderful moment live. And finally: the crowd. At the time, I was horrified -- they were subdued, sitting through most of the show, responding with only average applause to spectacular moments like the solos or the energy of R/R and Ladytron. If I wish to be gracious, I might say they were exhausted by the heat of the day. But I don't wish to be gracious, so I'll proclaim them a bunch of clueless louts who wouldn't recognize talent if it danced before them in a gold lame' bodysuit labeled "I am Talent" and used a bullhorn to proclaim the same. My opinion moderated somewhat when they seemed to join the party about 2/3 of the way through, standing to applaud Jealous Guy and then remaining on their feet (and dancing) for the rest of the show. But still. Am I being too hard on them? Expecting too much? I'd certainly like to hear what other Minneapolitans thought. But I'd also like to hear what others have to say -- does this jibe with experiences in other cities? Those of you that rushed the stage: at what point did this happen? What songs finally "engaged" the audience? And, as an addendum to this: how might the set list be structured to bring the audience into things earlier? (Pointless question? Yes, because I'm quite sure they're not going to change things based on this e-mail. But interesting to ponder. And forgive me, if you think I'm making too much of this -- it's just really bothering me.). Susan P.S. My fiance' was not particularly a fan of Roxy -- he was introduced to them through me, and has had to endure repeated and prolonged listening sessions. However -- the concert bowled him over. To the extent that he even suggested we try to get to the Vancouver show (the $1300 airline tickets are preventing this). I got in the car last night to find "Siren" still in the CD player -- and I hadn't put it there! He sings Love is the Drug around the house! No longer will there be patient sighs when I put 5 Roxy cds in the cd changer! Those tickets were the best investment I ever made. ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 2 Aug 2001 14:48:31 -0500 From: "Forster, Scott" Subject: RE: [AVALON] Roxy in RC At the Atlanta show I could have sworn that Bryan introduced Lucy Wilkins as 'Wincey Wilkins'.
