Hmm... as completely unrelated to the topic as the above, but taking advantage of the segue: Those Canadians at HMV.com have taste, for the following was in this morning's HMV.communique. Roxy Music For Your Pleasure / Remastered / Ltd / Paper Sleeve Anyone who's experienced the recent reunion shows featuring Mssrs. Ferry, McKay and Manzanera knows the importance of this, Roxy's second album, to their catalogue. Bookended by a pleasantly debauched opener ('Do The Strand') and a bittersweet, glamourous closer ('For Your Pleasure'), this record found Roxy prowling on the darker side of the glam wave. And this import version, with its paper sleeve and mini-vinyl look, is as sleek and snazzy as one of Bryan's dinner jackets. Smooooth. [link snipped] So, it seems that there's either been an additional batch produced or they've come across more copies -- the entire RM/BF catalog (except for 'Taxi') is again available in the limited edition format. And I could have brought it because no one checked, and I asked an usher and she said "camaras are OK just no flashes". felt really stupid then. Afterwards I called the room and no one answered so we thought nobody was there yet. So we killed some time at Steak and Shake. apparently the music was too loud up there. otherwise we would have come directly to the party. wanted to meet Mark and thank him in person for the tickets he sold me. Which were primo. Which reminds me that our seats were in almost the exact orientation of the seats that I harrassed Eddie J. from back in the 70s. we were in the first section off the floor to the left, but at the far end of that section, (102) in the first row, the first 2 seats. I kept wanting to ask people "are you on the list??" the guy behind us said yes but he just joined. Hey all! What a show! Here's my quick Roxy-in-Chicago report: My freind Kurt and I had seen them in Boston last week, from just behind the soundboard, so we knew more or less what to expect. But what a different show this was. We had seats right at the end of the front row, on the Phil side, so a great view of Phil and Chris and (often) Zev and Julia, and Andy and that singer guy.Gods who stalk the earth! As a Lighting Designer, I was a bit dissappointed with the frontlighting in both shows, I couldn't really see any faces unless people were solo-ing, so I had missed a lot of the all important interaction between the band members. But in Chicago, I could see it all, just because of the odd angle of my seats. It was a much better band that played Chicago. I hadn't realized in Boston that the second half of the show had fallen apart. In Chicago, the second part Rocked. Yannick helped.... Actually in Boston the song Avalon sort of fell apart. In Chicago it was luscious. In Boston Jealous Guy was super fast, and sort of peremptory. In Chicago they slowed the tempo considerably (still fast though) and it really flew. And they played Virginia Plain! The only down side was the one person between me and the stage, a hulking guy, who danced like Hagrid the whole time, causing 20 or so people behind him to lean back and forth like watching tennis. I enjoyed watching the audience Monday. There were two groups of people near me, one a group who danced passionately and badly to things like "Oy Yeah, who were horrified, Horrified, by songs like "Dreamhome" and "FYP". And near them, my folk: those who knew everyword of "Streetlife", and recognized the VCS3. Okay, Parties. I know that what you really want to know about. The Chicago Avalonian Martini Club had a room at the Hyatt thanks to our own Siren Kim. Paul and I supplied the Negronis (which has become the official cocktail), and we were joined by Giovanni and Kelly and Kurt before the show. AFTER the show we were joined by Mary the Paririe Rose with Danillo in tow, Jas (with Champagne!) and about a dozen others. My brother and his wife never found us. (Two Hyatts in Rosemont, y'know) Quite a night... As Kurt drove me home he said: "Y'know, its 2AM on a Monday, we've been listening to Roxy Music with wasted people...its just like High School all over again." Lastly, I will be posting a review of the lighting on a lighting design list I am on. Should I post it here? And, if you have any strong opinions of the lighting, drop me a line sooner rather than later. Thanks! It's an attempt to cut down messages on the list which will be of interest only to a very few Avalonians and so we can meet (or avoid!) other list members at those concerts we attend. If you'd like to be included, here's how: 1. You email me off list at Roxy_Tour@squires.nildram.co.uk and let me know which date or dates you'll be at. Alternatively, you can put your details on a web form on the site below, which then is emailed to me. 2. I will put information received up on: http://www.squires.nildram.co.uk/Avalon.html 3. Everybody will then know who's likely to be at each show and can then make contact _off list_ if they so wish. Details of a venue for a pre or post gig meeting can also be posted to the web page via the above address.
