Hello from Chicago Avalonians-- Just checking in to report a fabulous show. I was really blown away by the enery level the band put on. Paul Thompson really held things tight right out of the box, that first drum break from Remake -remodel setting the pace for the show. I really dug how Phil Manzanera and Chris Spedding shared the lead guitar playing on many songs. The guitar highlights for me were Phils guitar wringing crescendos at the end of ladyton early in the set, and also Chris and Phils duet/duel gtr. in Both Ends Burning. Also the violin on Out of the Blue was fantastic. But the man of the hour with the ageless master of ceremonies, Bryan Ferry. His voice was flawless, he nailed every inflection on Song for Europe, (what a guy makes ya cry undt I did) and Oh Yeah. That is one smooth dude. As a musical unit, the band really gelled with In every dream home...provideing subtle little nuances to the brooding buildup under Ferrys passionate peaon (not pee on!) to the lovely love doll. But no Mother of Pearl! I won't Virginia com-Plain too much. Especially since I won these tickets on the radio. Well maybe a little but only because its my all time fave RM song. Maybe next time, or someone out there has a good copy I could burn, hmmm? The only negatives: 90 minutes is just a bit too short for Roxy. There is too much great material. They should have played maybe 15-20 minutes longer. And the song selection toward the end of the show is just a tad too predicatable save For your Pleasure, which functions mainly as an outro for each musician. In addition to MoP, I would have loved to hear something a bit more obscure, like Amazona, Casanova, Three and Nine or even Trash. In short, a little more of the earlier (pre-Siren) and less of the later ( I know Trash is later but ah well). Its been a long time since I last saw them , at the Uptown Theate, 1979. They rocked the house down just like they did then. Sadly, concessions were woefully understocked, and they ran out of programs and several T-shirts before the show even started. Remake / Remodel street life ladytron while my heart out of the blue song for europe my only love dream home oh yeah both ends burning Tara Virginia plain avalon dance away jealous guy editions of you love is the drug do the strand for your pleasure Hopefully this is the correct address--I am subcribed and get the digest but I wasn't sure if this will post--we'll see. Hi folks, particularly Chicago Avalonians, I was silly enough not to join the list until today, (although have been following Roxy news for quite some time) so had no idea there was a get-together. I used to live in Rogers Park, but now live two hours away in southern WI. The post I'm replying to sums up everything I thought about the show, especially the unfulfilled hope to hear Mother of Pearl. At least we got Dreamhome and Virginia Plain, although many in the audience used the former as a break to buy beer or smoke--shame on them! (Although I took my break during My Only Love, and apparently missed a great Beck-stye solo by Spedding.) Also, my fiance (of 13 years) and I were seated next to the rudest two guys at the show, who regularly shouted (ROXAAAAY!!! BRYAN FEERRRRRAAY!!, etc.) and whistled, at the top of their lungs, even during the quietest and most serious moments such as Tara and Europe. I'm sure this brought down Roxy's collective opinion of their Chicago fan base. GREAT to hear Yanick Etienne. I thought they played long enough, although of course I'd have preferred a five-hour show covering most of their entire catalogue. Wouldn't we all? A fan in front of me summed up the show when a woman jumped up nervously to let him by when he said, "Relax! It's Roxy!" I don't think Terri Hemmert mentioned the 1979 Uptown show. That was before my Roxy time, and I thought my fiance had dreamed that one up--guess he really did go. ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 31 Jul 2001 13:58:40 -0700 From: "Eman 97" Subject: [AVALON] Re: avalon-digest V6 #344 >>Eman, you prefer Dance Away ( rock? ) to Both Ends Burning ( art pop? )? Both Ends Burning is also pop, but far preferable to the post Manifesto era. Give me the first five albums any day over the last three. You got it backwards, I prefer the first 5, they rock more, are more adventurous and diverse. _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 31 Jul 2001 22:13:01 +0100 From: "Duncan Watkins" Subject: [AVALON] tour poster/wallpaper the tour 2001 tour poster/wallpaper seems to have reappeared at http://www.manzanera.com/news2.htm#Wallpaper unless i missed this before duncan _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 31 Jul 2001 16:24:55 -0500 From: Susan Stekel Subject: [none] Hello all; I'm a little concerned that this first posting to Avalon will give the impression that I'm a raving nutter. And also, this encounter is clearly nothing, compared with the tales that have spun on this list the past weeks/months. However, it's a slow afternoon at work, and I'm killing time until this evening's concert, and it is a moment that amused my overheated mind (heat index of 106 degrees F here today -- that's "stunningly hot" in Centigrade). So, I'll share: I work on the Univ of Minnesota campus -- home to Northrop Auditorium, where Roxy is playing tonight. So naturally, heat or not, I wanted to trot over on my lunch break just to see how things were coming (see "raving nutter," above). I walked around to the back of the hall, and there they were: 3 semi-trucks, and two buses. They're here! Hurrah!! Giddy little excitement. So I seat myself on a bench, with my sandwich, and get a good view -- lots of the requisite sound equipment, a large guitar-shaped shipping case, etc. Soon enough, a catering truck pulls up. And it occurs to me: this is my big chance to find out vital insider information, such as whether Bryan prefers his olives with or without pimento. So I approach the catering man -- "Hi, are you doing the catering for tonight?" To which he replies happily, "Yes, we are." Me: "Did they ask for anything special?" Catering Man: "Oh, we're just doing the concessions." So I jokingly ask: "What are you feeding us, then?" Catering Man: "No, no -- another company is doing the catering for the band. I don't know what they'll be feeding you guys." And it was an odd half-second before I comprehended -- he thinks I'm in the band. And, naturally, I wouldn't want to embarrass him by correcting him ... So, er, yes, I'm in the band. Of course I'm in the band, you silly thing. Now if I can just work my way onto that plane tonight ... Cheers to my Minneapolis compatriots, and best wises to all -- Susan [who looks a lot like Lucy, if you close one eye, squint with the other, and are seriously drunk] P.S. Thanks for your patience with my bemused daydream of what "being in the band" might be like in this case. Chalk it up to Roxy excitement. Let me tell you, all the worry was in vain. So maybe they didn't play a prized song (no MOP last night). Maybe it wasn't a 3-hour concert. But I can tell you this. IT IS THE REAL THING! THIS IS ROXY MUSIC! Those of you who have yet to see them, put your worries aside and prepare to be more entertained and thrilled than you have in years. And those of us who have seen them now, will sigh in contentment. The setlist has already been reported, so I won't repeat it. Here are some of the things that I thought were highlights. Phil's solo on Ladytron. Lucy's solo on OOTB. Both of those solos were sheer rock trancendance! Andy's flawless reed work. Paul's great drumming, and the excitement he injected into such laid back numbers as Jealous Guy. And Bryan--what can you say? He seemed in top form, perfectly assured, enjoying himself, and singing fabulously. And Yanick Etienne was there! When I saw here stroll onto the stage, I knew that Avalon would be everything it should be. And the stage setup was great too. Someone hypothesized that the stage is so simple because Bryan is blind as a bat. Well, sometimes less is more, and the spare elegance of it gave the musicians a place that was classy yet not too distracting. Simple swags of gray drapes at the front, a few hangings at the back (including what looked like giant Mardi Gras beads!). Someone had a theory a few months ago that this show would be taped for the eventual video and live album. I really hope it was, because this was a show that certainly did Roxy proud. And I would love to have a nice plastic-encased digital replica of it all, as a backup for my memory. Everyone's speculation when Bryan's alleged new solo album will be out. To quote something a list member said once about the alleged box set, we probably have a better chance of an asteroid falling on us than having a new Ferry album by October (that's only two months off, for one thing). Personally, I think I'm more interested in the document of this tour. For someone who first discovered Roxy after they were already broken up (post-Avalon) and who'd never gotten to see them, the show was worth the wait. Now I just want to have my DVD so I can experience it again, whenever I like.
