I am still mesmerized. The show last night in Chicago was absolutely incredible, even better than I had hoped for after reading every review of their appearances posted since the first TOTP. The energy, the interaction between the guys, everything was completely up and on and WOW, what a show. My view was from Row 6, Seat 1, and although being so far stage left (and only 5'4) I was craning my neck but nonetheless missed some of the happenings. And no, they didn't do MOP, but Virginia Plain was amazing, as was Yannick Etienne. And it was LadyTron they did, not 2HB as stated in a previous email. The crowd was rocking and really into it - playing to all of Bryan's movements. Hey, these people aren't Avalonians; where did they come from? I thought it was only us who were the proud, the obsessed. And speaking of the proud and obsessed: one of the best parts was the comraderie. Minus a couple of snags: there are two Hyatt's near the concert location and it seems most people wound up at the wrong one first for the pre-show meeting, and Jas, who has somewhat become our leader, got trapped at work until really really late. Of course he had volunteered to bring the CD player and all the champagne too. But alas, he made it to the theater and won our Best Dressed award for his leather pants and tuxedo jacket. It was great to see again/meet: Paul, Jas and friend Giovanni, Andrew and friend Kurt, Kim Shell (thanks for the room!), Will from Milwaukee, Mark Shanahan and spouse, and his friend whose name I forgot (sorry!) and Danilo from Italy along with Mary Tomlinson. One of the best parts - and there were many - - was to have all of you around to talk about the intricacies of the set and the players. Without being labeled insane. Anyway, I have to dash off - got a 6 1/2 hour drive ahead of me to catch the Minneapolis show tonight. AFter waiting, hoping, and praying for this since 1985 (when I discovered RM at the age of 17 and subsequently learned that they were no more) it has finally come true. And they blew my mind. I just notice that watching the video, seeing Ferry's performance and the band's own work as being rather stiff in the beginning, loosening up(finally) on Love Is the Drug. >In fact, no post-1980 band of Ferry's that I've seen or heard did pre-'76 >well, until the '94 Ferry tour... Listening to '94 bootlegs, I'd have to say they do sound pretty nice... :) _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 31 Jul 2001 11:03:37 -0500 From: Miles Goosens Subject: Re: [AVALON] Toronto/Mother of Pearl? Sorry if that wasn't understood from my Atlanta review -- how much more could I have praised the current iteration of the band? :-) However, I did think that Roxy, at least at the Atlanta show, played *everything* tremendously well, meaning that "While My Heart Is Still Beating," "Avalon," "Oh Yeah," "Jealous Guy," "Tara," and especially "My Only Love" sounded just as good as the 1-5 songs. Of course, I *like* the later Roxy/Ferry material too, so that may color my perception. later, Miles ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 31 Jul 2001 12:01:08 EDT From: AMCORPLTD1@aol.com Subject: [AVALON] Tour poster [demime 0.97c removed an attachment of type image/jpeg which had a name of poster1100x800.jpg] ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 31 Jul 2001 12:02:11 EDT From: InterEireann@aol.com Subject: Re: [AVALON] Fwd: Chicago Miles, I presume the reference to " 2HB " in the set list your freind of friend provided for Chicago should be Ladytron. Both of them, to me, are pop music, just that BEB was six years ahead of its time, because in 1981-82, you couldn't throw a brick without hitting some New Wave/New Romantic band with that song's keyboards and vocal style, Duran Duran being the biggest culprit. Dance Away was more in tune to mainstream rock currents, but then again, as much as they tried(if they ever even did), Roxy was and always will be a mainstream pop act. A bit more quirky, more experimental than most, but still mainstream. For me, the big difference is that post-Manifesto Roxy was more of a "vehicle" for Ferry's own solo career rather than a band oriented situation that earlier Roxy was(even when Ferry wrote all the songs). This version of Roxy produces mixed reactions in me like Ferry's solo work does. Some, like The Bride Stripped Bare and Boys and Girls I like, others like Let's Stick Together and Bete Noire I don't. The bar closed at midnight, so all other people left, but Paul was sitting between my husband and I and the other band members were gathered together at two seating arrangements with us. I think I was in shock! Paul was very nice (very tired, too). His girlfriend was flying over to meet him in NY the next day and she had just called to say her luggage was lost. Andy was first to the bar, but left when he heard it was closing. Bryan arrived with Lucy Wilkins (the violinist) to the bar. Zev Katz came too. Two of the 'Las Vegas' girls arrived too. One was celebrating her 21st birthday that day and wanted to go 'clubbing', but stayed when she couldn't get the others to go. They were all very mellow and (i'm sure) very tired. When I asked Bryan for a picture with me, he ran his fingers through his hair quickly to pull it off his face and pulled up his jacket collar. I told him I was at Tuesday's show too and Bryan said, 'We were really good tonight, were'nt we?!' Even after the show and a shower, Bryan wore a blue shirt. cuff links, a shiny blue jacket and a tie! Paul had on an old Barbados tee shirt and Andy had on an orange suit with orange sunglasses. No sign of Phil at any time. Their bus was parked outside and they were leaving for NYC at 10:30 am, although when we left them it was 2:00 am and they were just opening a magnum of champagne! They're the best and Bryan is even better in person! ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 31 Jul 2001 19:26:16 +0200 From: "Stefan Thomsen" Subject: [AVALON] Please help: need 3 first songs from Glasgow! - ----- Original Message ----- From: To: Sent: Tuesday, July 31, 2001 6:47 PM Subject: Re: [AVALON] Stage Door Stalking I need the first 3 songs from the Glasgow show.
