Style is something which can not be bought or copied. Style is a personally unique substance which seems to elude those who try most to capture it. Style may be cultivated, but it really doesn't exist until it is synonymous with the person to whom it belongs - it is the equivalent of skin, flesh and blood. Style is illusive, obtainable only if you stumble upon its stride. Couple of things... That is easy to know, now, when you are older. But who knew that at 17-18? The point was that a lot of Brits and Euro's tried to emulate the early Roxy Style, and Bryan kind of fed the flames with badges and Roxy Rule, ok sloganeering. I also think style has something to do with looks too. Bryan had enough in that dept, and he had a lot of help from his style team. Who knows what Bryan's style is. We know he is an adequet clothes horse, he wears the stuff well, but others helped him immensly in conception. _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 30 Jul 2001 16:16:04 -0700 From: "Eman 97" Subject: [AVALON] Toronto/Mother of Pearl? I see and hear THE HIGH ROAD totally differently -- the later Roxy Music stuff sounds perfectly fine, but the early stuff steadfastly refuses to catch fire. It's as though this iteration of the band, locked into the atmospheric, funky grooves of F+B and AVALON, could no longer change gears. In fact, no post-1980 band of Ferry's that I've seen or heard did pre-'76 well, until the '94 Ferry tour... later, Miles ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 30 Jul 2001 19:50:33 -0700 From: Ida M Miller Subject: [AVALON] Stage Door Stalking Did anyone have any opportunities to get anyone near Bryan or any other band members after shows? Varied food (some is veggie), good beer and other alcoholic drinks... There's cheap parking on the corner too, $2 after 5 PM. It's about 7 minutes walk from the Northrup. Email me off-list if you want more detailed directions... I hope to be there by 6 PM or so. J.O'B and I arrived from Boston mid-afternoon, and once again checked into the New Yorker Hotel. Wouldn't have been my first choice, as it's not a part of town I'm too fond of - in a perfect world, I'd be in the East or Greenwich Village - but the hotel was chosen for it's proximity to Madison Sq Garden - just yards away. No time for all that tourist stuff this time - almost immediately we were off to Mustang Harrys, to meet up with the rest of the gang. A few nervy pre-gig drinks (well, for me anyway) and off we went. I was really pleased with my seat (thanks Jocelyn !) just 5 rows from the front, on the Manzo side. Was this really the same Band I saw just 2 nights previously ? What a world, no, two worlds, of difference. 'Mother Of Pearl' back in it's rightful place too. They rocked, they smiled, they laughed, the crowd was up and went to the front (at the sides) pretty early on too, with no hassle from Aisle Guards either, thank-you very much. I could barely believe it - it was as if the Band that had thrilled me, and so many others from just a few weeks back at Dublin, Glasgow, and Newcastle, were reborn, remade, remodelled. Wonderful. I was so relieved, because of 'the Boston Experience' - but this was something else. The addition of Yannick was a real thrill - like an old friend returning to the fray, and she really made a difference too - her infectious smile being repeated all around. An amazing gig. Our happy crew retired to Mustang Harrys later with excited chatter, in a very 'up' mood. Kudos galore to John Dillon for secretly smuggling in all the Roxy CDs later, and many thanks to the staff for playing them. The most amazing choruses reverberated around the Bar, until deep into the early hours. J.O.'B said the 'Thanks for being such a great audience' at the end of FYP, bowed, and strolled down the other end of the Bar to the sort of reception only granted to The Great Paul Thompson. One by one, we all followed suit, to rapturous applause from the Avalonian contingent. I have never seen a bar full of so many locals look so baffled, confused, yet enjoying every minute of what the hell we were doing. We were the cabaret. It was one of those impromptu things that just happens sometimes, when a bunch of us get together, and it was such a great night, that none of us will forget. I vaguely remember a few pics being taken - I look forward to seeing them (I think). Tuesday nights gig was a corker too - 2 great nights at MSG... J.O.'B went home on the Wednesday, and I returned to the apartment in New Jersey for recovery, before returning to NYC on Thursday afternoon, to meet up with David Martin, and off we went to see another fave artist of mine, a brilliant Icelandic singer called Emiliana Torrini, at my loud insistence. Another great night - as I met her for a chat afterwards, although can barely remember what I said to her, (probably just as well as the Jack Daniels had really kicked in). A quick meal in an Italian restaurant, and down to Hoboken - where I almost expected to see pics of Sinatra dotted everywhere. 'Wrong part of town' David told me, as I furtively looked around for clues of the great mans birthplace. Friday 27th - back in NJ for recovery... 10 days holidays remain, no more gigs planned. Tourist behaviour and Record Shops abound to follow, until my return to the UK on 7th August. Tara... Reecey... Make international calls for as low as $.04/minute with Yahoo!
