KB- It was such a treat to meet you and all the others at the Merriweather show. My friends had a blast and were amazed at how many people had gathered to meet all from the Avalon list! Always remember that mushroom tree for future shows! :-) Heather- again, my apologies to YOU if my standing up impaired your vision. Heather happened to be two rows behind me. And I happened to have the music come over me when the boys started doing "Oh Yeah." So I got up and danced and sang and some wench came up to me to say "Excuse me, I can't see." I'm thinking, she's got to be at least 3 rows behind me... she can see. And I didn't sit. And then she came back halfway through and said "I hope you're happy I couldn't see a thing." My reply: "Charmed." Course, by the end of that song and into Both Ends Burning everyone was standing and my friends say she beat feet. Wench. A pleasure to meet Colleen, William, Heather, Emma, KB.. and my quick congrats to Gina while waiting in line for t-shirts. Thanks to you all! Still an amazing show. The only disappointment was the sound in the opening two numbers. Ferry's vocals were barely audible in "Re-make/Re-Model" It didn't help any that he was singing the verses an octave lower, burying his voice in the drums. At first I feared the whole night was going to be like that, but by the 4th song everything was bright and intelligible. Of course I would have liked to hear some other songs like "The Thrill of it All" or "Whirlwind" - I mean how many times do I have to hear live versions of "Heart Still Beating" and "Out of the Blue." Oh well, all a matter of taste. As a lurker who hasn't posted for years (but I've been here since 95) I stopped by the Avalonian table on the way out of Mustang Harry's., Great to meet some of you in person. OK, so Sylvian's voice sounds like Ferry's. Lets face it though, someone's going to sound like him. As far as I'm concerned Japan we're innovators during their time in both music, fashion sense and style. Sylian still produces innovative music. Many bands we're influenced by Roxy, however, Roxy we're also influenced by bands before their time. As far as Iva Davies is concerned, looking back at Japan's back catalogue and cult success, I think he'll find that it's Sylvian who's had the last laugh. Gary Numan? Why is he a shit? He or his music, that is? Every inside word I ever heard was that he was actually a nice, normal, genuine, person....until he got fucked over a number of times. I am not a Numan fan. But his success was certainly something. As for Sylvian ripping off Ferry, there was definitely a resemblance. But I was listening to Japan, laughing along, to the first two LP's. When asked in an interview about the similarities, Sylvian said something like "what am I going to do, that is my voice." Some phrasing may have been the same, but I find his voice totally different. I don't think Ferry could do "Ghosts" for instance. And Sylvian couldn't do "love me, leave me, do what you will..." Iva Davies was the biggest Ferry rip ever tho, "Hey Little Girl," people actually thought that was a Ferry number when they first heard it. With Japan and Sylvian, you would have thought it was an imitator at best. Ahh, those were the days. Today, Sylvian sounds totally different to me. Ferry mixes/ed his voice deep in the music. Sylvian mixed his up in the music. Sylvian made his voice a feature....Ferry often tried to blend his. I think Ferry was often insecure about his voice/range. Sylvian seemed to damn the torpedos and mix his voice up, warts and all. e _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 24 Jul 2001 14:44:20 -0700 From: "Eman 97" Subject: [AVALON] Seattle Attendees to Vancouver Show August 3rd ??? And _Storytellers_ (at least from what I know of it in my cableless existence) is about people who can stand up and tell stories and play music. Not Roxy's strong point. Besides, again I ask, why would VH-1 want Roxy? And before people start frothing at the mouth with knee-jerk reactions, I'm a fan, remember? But I'm also a realist. It's like asking why they're not on _Antiques Roadshow_. Except, uh, nevermind. > video and gets played by MTV. Those already converted cannot be > expected to carry the load by ourselves. If there's something the > promoters and the record company want us to do, some of us - like me - > will try to do it, but we can't do it alone. But the thing is that there is nothing to be done. The band has already been paid. SFX has already taken its profit. There's no record to flack, so there is no record company to appease. SFX or whoever they sold the contract too will make some money of the merchandise (not from me since it was so disappointing) and the concessions (sadly yes from me, but at least the guy in Boston had the courtesy to card me first). Everyone has been paid so there is no reason for anyone to do anything more than show up. No need for radio shows or interviews. I suppose TV would have been nice, with with the promoter and the band having already pocketed their checks, and with no record company to push for more sales, there's no leverage for sales. This won't be like _Mamouna_ with Bryan signing CDs--he's already got his 1,000,000#. He's done. He sings the set list of songs and he goes home until the next afternoon. Or I guess until the next Miss World contest. If there is no commercial impetus, there's no publicity push. It costs money to run those ads and make up those posters and create those promo materials, and they wouldn't sell that many more tickets to make it worthwhile. This isn't some hungry young band trying to make it or some guys desperate to be on top again. This is a nice tour, not requiring too much exertion, which pays well, after which everyone will go their separate ways. Hi I have been some days looking for old photos and I haven't found none I think it's very strange, but the most of the pages have only new photos... ...don't you like the old records? Where can I find photographs from the Avalon Tour era like the one I send? Has anybody any photograph of the 1982' band? Well, I know the fellow pictured with Ms. 100th club. It's non-other than John the Scotsman! - --who joined us, ticketless, I might add, at the bar in Columbia, MD. It had a happy ending--someone showed up at the bar with an extra ticket, and John was in luck. I expect many of you will be running into John (or already have) as he seems to be following Roxy around. By the way, I would like to thank everyone who made my wedding night a happy one. It was amazing to be standing in line at the merchandise booth and have a young man (he was 27, and didn't seem to belong at the show!) come up to me and say, hey! did you just get married? Turns out, he was a friend of Linda (Epstein?) 's. There's nothing like having a total stranger come up to you and acknowledge that you just got married.
