Where to begin? Well, my girlfriend Naomi and I made it to Mustang Harry's, asked for the Roxy Music gathering, and we got led straight to Mr. John Dillon. John and I travelled upstairs while my girlfriend stayed with his cousin Mary, and I ended up putting more faces to names on the list: Eileen from Kew Gardens, John O'Brien, Jocelyn, and others that I just can't remember right now. It was great hearing old war stories of seeing Roxy at the Palladium, or the Orpheum in Boston, or even hearing about John D's failed attempts at seeing UK at the old Calderone on Long Island. I even got to hear some great stories for the shows in Boston and Philadelphia this year. One interesting point in the conversation was when Eileen started talking about Sarah Brown and her inability to hit the high notes at the end of Avalon, which led to me saying "Well, it's not like they could fire Sarah and get the original singer on a moment's notice." How prophetic... So we walked to the Theater, and get to our seats just in time to hear Rufus Wainwright say "Thank you, good night." So I try my luck with the merchandise table. I get to the front, ask for a shirt and program... then realize I don't have enough cash! So I ran to the ATM in the Garden box office, ran back upstairs to the merchandise, then by the time I get to the front, they flick the lights in the lobby. Well, I decided that I'd rather miss out on a shirt than miss out on "Remake/Remodel", so I head back to my seat... and wait... and wait... and wait... My seats were two in from the center aisle, BTW, so when I saw John and Mary heading out, I was able to warn them that the show was starting soon. And what a show! Remember my comment earlier about firing Sarah Brown? Well, they didn't (which was alright by me, since she was in fine voice last night), but for the high parts on Avalon, they brought out Yannick Etienne! So, of course, I'm left with a little egg on my face from when I said they couldn't get her at a moment's notice... Anyway, someone answered my prayers last night, as I got to see both "Dream Home" and "Mother Of Pearl". I was hoping for "Virginia Plain" to complete the trifecta, but it wasn't to be. But the performances were so tight that I didn't care one bit. I had been a little worried that with older songs being dropped from the setlist for newer songs that I was going to feel a bit ripped off after spending $150 for two tickets. But they had me at "I tried but I could not find a way..." Now I'm jealous that I don't get to go again tonight. Thank you Roxy Music, and thank you Avalon for an unforgettable night. - --Don ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 24 Jul 2001 09:34:24 -0400 From: KB Porter Subject: Re: [AVALON] NYC-first impressions Yes, Yannick was on stage, don't know about Sarah. I have a little story to tell you. About a week ago I received an e-mail at roxyrama from someone purporting to be Yanick Etienne. She wanted to contact the tour with a view to joining, or putting in a guest appearance in NYC, where I think she is based. I replied with some record company information, and passed her e-mail on to the Roxy organisation (who were, shall we say, 'dubious' at the authenticity of this contact - I can't say I honestly blame them really...especially if you saw how the e-mail was worded..) The next day I got a reply from Yanick, saying that she had contacted the band in Toronto, and was waiting to hear whether she would be included. I guess you now know the rest. It's nice though, to have played a (very) small part in this. I'm a Roxy Music fan since I was a child. I love all the classical songs (Avalon, More than this, Love is the drug, Slave to love, Jealous guy, Let's stick together, ...) but I have to say -I don't know what will you think- The high road is my favorite record. I think the performances of each musician are just great. That drumming (Andy Newmark, where are you now?), that bass (Alan), that guitar solos (Neil -incredible solo on My only love- and Phil), etc. I have the video from Frejus 1982. I would like to know if "The high road" from Glasgow was filmed and it exists as a video or as a VCD. Last week I found this text: (mini-LP March 1983: Polydor EGMLP 1; CD VIDEO Oct 1988: PolyGram 080 438 1) Recorded September 1982 at Apollo, Glasgow, UK. I don't know if it's really from Glasgow. I know there is a confusing mix on Heart still beating with these two different concerts. What a pity. I am interested in some bootleg from the 1982-1983 era, I have nothing to trade so I don't know what can I do. I only have the Psalm VCD but don't know if it's worth it or not. I am interested in the bootlegs from New York, Tokyo, Osaka, London or/and Rotterdam. I'm a member of a Dire Straits newsgroup. If you like Dire Straits then we can trade, I have ALL. What is the connexion between Dire Straits and Roxy Music? ... Guy Fletcher, the High Road keyboardist who is now touring with Mark Knopfler. Other connexions could be Mel Collins, ... We are going to chat with Guy Fletcher soon -he has a page and you can write to him- so if is there anyone interested write to me. I would like to say it's very difficult to find Roxy photogalleries, it seems you don't like their past. There is NONE photo from the High Road era, for example. Why? Roxy Music were in Spain few days ago but I couldn't assist because Santiago de Compostela is 1000 KM distance from Barcelona. I hope to see Roxy someday in Barcelona. That's all for now. Melissa and I are now seriously considering trying to go to a couple of the September European dates. We were particularly eying the Antwerp and Rotterdam dates, but we're open to suggestion. Does anyone know if tickets are still available for the shows (the two Low Countries ones in particular), and have any tips for us about travel, accommodations, etc. I've barely been to the Continent (a quick jaunt to Paris from London in '87), and Melissa's not been outside of London at all, plus my surname doesn't carry with it a residual knowledge of Flemish... I know there's a large Low Countries contingent of Avalonians, and since they have the imprimatur of Reecey's approval, I know they'll come through for us... ;-) Replies off-list, please. later, Miles ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 24 Jul 2001 17:52:41 +0200 From: Daniel Atterbom Subject: [AVALON] George Harrison: 'Not Dying' http://www.q4music.com/news/displaynews.cfm?ObjectUUID=96090E4F-8035-11D5-9D0F00 010244AF85 Harrison:'Not Dying' Beatle 'Disgusted' By Reports "The original 'story' wa conjured up by the National Enquirer, the Globe and the Daily Mail." it says. (2) Right before the Roxy set, I met the percussionist from Avalon-era tour coming out of th men's room. He was delighted that I remembered him. (3) In the men's room, I heard that David Bowie was in the audience from a cop who was doing the security for the show. (4) Yannick has made appearance every single time Ferry played in NY as far as the shows I've have been to. I been to all of Ferry shows from Mamouna tour on. She is from NY area, I think. About 10 years ago, I was doing my run on Hillside Ave (Jamamica, NY) when I saw a bill pasted on the streetlight of dates she was playing in a local Haitian bar. (5) Out of all of the memebers, I thought Manzanera was the most impressive on this tour. Wow, he kicked butt on some of the guitar solos and put some new life into old treasures. (6) We saw David Bowie and Iman leave about 45 minutes after the show. Didn't get a good look but he is stylish as ever. (7) Then Ferry left little after that w/ 2 of his kids (boys) with Lucy also appearing out of nowhere to greet them. They all got into a limo fast and took off. (8) Then Paul Thompson came out with his wife/gf/?. Got him to sign the ticket stub. (9) Then came Mackay w/ his companion and got him to sign the stub. (10) Never saw Manzanera (11) Lou Reed and his wife snuck by us in such a plain drabby clothes. Probably trying to blend in and nobody recognized them but he didn't get it past me. Great show! I am going again tonight! ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 24 Jul 2001 09:39:32 -0700 (PDT) From: David Southern Subject: Re: [AVALON] hi from Barcelona, HIGH ROAD Hi Joan, David from Atlanta here (remember me?). It was during his Napoleon phase (I believe) with a spinning roulette wheel with song titles on it--there was also a bar set up on stage and some go-go cages for those so inclined. > Alternatively - maybe they should try the "Glenn Tilbrook" approach > which has been "shout out the name of a song that you want me to play > and I'll have a go" (which he does - even if it's a song that he's not > written) It's a nice dream, but that sort of spontaneity far exceeds Roxy's grasp. I mean, Phil's strap goes over his head at the same bar every night in his "Ladytron" solo.
