Sadly the forces of commercialism will probably dictate that it will feature more of the letter period singles rather than the more hard core favoured obscurities. Virginia Plain? Not at Merryweather. A clear sky, the evening cool with gentle breezes, the only plane around was flying into Baltimore's airport! Suffice it to say, Paul Thompson's power drumming excellently over-beat my heart. Andy Mackay's woodwinds were blown to earthly perfection. Watch out Jacques Luc Pointe, the accomplished Lucy Wilkins has got it, unfortunately her solo was not prominently mixed, nearly lost in the ether - out of the blue. Manzanera - wow. Wow! Wow! If there is something, Chris Spedding does Canada proud, his bluesy licks are tight! The Z-man Katz was muffled in the mix, too bad for such a dexterous bass player. Think I'll shave my head. And wear black shades - - which brings me to Julia. She is intense in her involvement, an integral component of the band. Perhaps she and Paul are the feistiest of the group - good to see. But tell me, how does one sign-on as one of those dirty-dog dancers? - And, I wonder if they suffer any hair loss - a brisk breeze alone could certainly 'knock them over with a (few dozen) feather(s)! Tomorrow's headline: Lido, Gone With The Wind! :-) OK. Now for the hard part. The 'weakest link', if you will, was none other than Mr. Ferry. He looked haggard, from the beginning. His level of enthusiasm seemed largely contrived. Yes, I'd be tired too, had I his schedule - but this is his job and one would reasonably hope Mr. Ferry does enjoy it. Only A Song For Europe seemed to bring out a voice rich with infliction, a face of varied expression coupled with entirely appropriate body language. Of course, I loved the whole show! I'm glad I was able to see Roxy Music Reformed. But the best of it all? Meeting some very fine people, some of whom are well known to this List. First, Let me thank Heather James for bringing me the TOTP2/BBC Radio boot CD. It is superb (Thank you, Han). It was a treat to meet Heather and her dear friend, Emma, at The Last Chance Saloon. (I missed saying good bye after the gig, hope you enjoyed the evening, too!) As we three chatted, an amazing sight appeared. The saloon's doors swung open, two men entered, looked around as if poised, ready to draw on any shooting match - there stood Mr. John O'Brien and Mr. Victor Hastings. They were in need of refreshment having driven from Philly to Columbia with plans to ride off into the ?sunrise? later on (gee, Victor must be in New Orleans by now). Next along came our newly-weds, Gina and John. Then a few unknown Roxy fans, who may one day reach this list, stopped by for chats. And just as I was about to think we were the only ones to make the pre-meet, in comes (drum roll, please) Ms. Colleen Matan and Mr. William Sommers! Oh boy, my day was made! There I was, the least Roxy-knowledged in the group. And let me tell those of you who may not already know this, but those guys are some heavy-duty Anoraks! I felt cool just being with them. A side note to Ems - John was a perfect Scot representative to send stateside! I only wish there had been more of our fellow list members to meet. Oh, but I am not forgetting - Linda Epstein, et al - a handsome clan of people - were to be found exactly where Linda said they would be. The spot is hence forth known to me as "Linda's tree at second stage where 'Mushrooms' gather"! ;0] That was the best part - meeting a group of fine individuals whom I would never have met in my life if it had not been for Bryan Ferry, Roxy Music, the internet and its offspring, Avalon Mailing List. I hope you all had a great time. I did. I shall not forget. VIVA ROXY MUSIC!!!!!!!!!! All the best, to all the best. Like any good piece of theatre, it opened and closed with curtains, boasted enchanting set decor (in an inexplicable forest motif), while the narrative was broken down into three acts -- or make that Bryan Ferry wardrobe changes. Act 1 set everybody straight -- yes, this version of Roxy Redux (featuring originals Ferry, sax man Andy Mackay, guitarist Phil Manzanera and drummer Paul Thompson sans synth-wizard Brian Eno) still knows how to pick their art out of their trash and vice versa, and yes, Bryan Ferry is still the only man on the planet who can make a black leather suit seem dignified. Machine-gunned opener "Remake/ Remodel" -- the first song on the first Roxy album -- reminded us just how much Thompson's seismic stomping was missed on the later records, while the ensuing parade of vintage material ("Street Life," "Ladytron," "Out of the Blue") showed Roxy have correctly assumed that any renewed interest in the band owes more to a post-Velvet Goldmine/Hedwig reclamation of the early catalogue than to perpetual airplay of "More Than This" on EZ-rock radio. The band's choice of couture -- long overcoats in loud colours that make them look like some glitter-rock mafia -- also proved that Roxy haven't lost their keen sense of the ridiculous. Stranded's brooding piano piece "A Song for Europe" ushered in Ferry's white-jacket phase, and then it was goodbye '70s sleaze, hello '80s condo background-dinner music: the Flesh + Blood numbers found Mackay playing less like John Coltrane and more like Kenny G., the supporting players each took extended solo spotlight turns and the video screen flashed tranquil footage of rolling clouds and water drops, the sort you'd find on some New Age self-help tape. A rip through Siren's "Both Ends Burning" (complete with leather-tubed dancing girls) and another Ferry switch to silver lami prevented a full-on free fall into cocktail-lounge complacency, and once he got "Avalon," "Dance Away" and "Jealous Guy" out of his system, it was back to business. A blazing "Editions of You" let Mackay and Thompson go apeshit once again, spurred on by some Eno-worthy Theremin freakouts, while set-closer "Virginia Plain" made a case that beneath the infinite layers of pretense and poses, Roxy Music are just a brilliant little rock 'n' roll band. They're still a damn fine disco unit, too, as evinced by the encore "Love Is the Drug" -- an obvious choice, sure, but still a clear-cut cocaine classic, followed by a double shot of For Your Pleasure: a suitably over-the-top "Do the Strand" and the cooly dramatic title track, during which the Roxys left the stage one by one. Ferry, naturally, exited first, coaxing yet another standing ovation and walking away with a mile-wide grin, content in knowing that, some 30 years on, he can pit bizzarro alien sex-rock against lite-jazz yuppie pop and still walk away looking like the coolest motherfucker in showbiz. - -STUART BERMAN Toronto Street Paper, Eye - 07.19.01 http://www.eye.net/eye/issue/issue_07.19.01/music/liveeye.html ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 22 Jul 2001 09:14:38 -0700 (PDT) From: Maggie Curran Subject: Re: [AVALON] Toronto Review #4 James x2: I LOVED this review! I wonder what Bry's objection was to the recordings. If the stations in question had followed through and got these recordings to more stations, then it might well have meant greater sales. Sorry if it is sloppy. I've still got to pack my kid's lunch and read at least one page of War and Peace before I go to sleep... My husband and I got to the Barking Crab at 7:30. We had a good time hanging out with some Avalonians from Atlanta and their friends from Providence, RI. Very nice people. We discussed our children, Boston, our jobs, and our hopes for a "rockin" Ferry release in the near future. After that, we took a 15-minute walk to the Fleet Pavillion. I was so excited by then. Here was the moment I'd been waiting for all my life, etc etc, bla bla bla. We glanced at the merchandise, sure enough, there was the "Love is the Drug" tank top, T-Shirts with the newest cover girl, and a RM sweatshirt which I thought was silly. Then we took our seats. Section 4, but a small enough place so that didn't matter. I was sitting next to a spastic, wired punk rocker from Albany, NY who was telling stories of seeing Blondie 9 times, and travelling up and down the Eastern Seaboard for the past 7 days seeing punk gigs. This man would later pogo to "Out of the Blue." He had some interesting stories about his brother who had lived in NY since '72 and had seen just about every show at CBGB's and Max's Kansas City - Talking Heads, Television, Blondie in her prime. I asked him if Roxy had ever played CBGB's. He didn't know. Anyone know? I then noticed a man about 3 rows in front of me wearing a VERY OLD looking Velvet Underground shirt, with the name "Nico" scrawled across it in felt tip. Very cool, if it was the real thing. A nice event to wear it. I decided that I was amongst the first cut of of New Wavers, punks and art rockers. A group of people who I would love to interrogate for weeks. Also, a Velvet Underground nostalgia swept over me, which would resurface during the course of the night. Roxy Music came right on stage, no Wainwright. Ferry at the left hand, on keyboards as promised, an array of well dressed men and beautiful young women on stage. Between the "Viva" disco glitter of Sarah, the "As Time Goes By" classical refinement of Lucy, and the stylish lamee'd Paul, Andy, Phil, and Bryan (who speak for themselves), it looked like a crazy composite of the entire history of RM/BF shows on one stage. Here was the set list, as well as I could document it: Remake/Remodel "Lady, if you want to find a lover" (sorry, forgot the title) (Phil went crazy on guitar at the end. Between that and the flashing videos, it sounded very cacophonic and I finally understood why they're often compared to VU) While My Heart is Still Beating (Lucy was playing a nice hand held percussion instrument that I don't know the name of) Out of the Blue (I was impressed by the "planet" background. It also reminded me of Andy Warhol VU films. But I think I'd be impressed by most anything in concert technology today since I haven't been to a rock show in so long) Song for Europe (enter the white coat, this is one of my favorites and they didn't disappoint me) Only Love, or whatever it's called (yawn. I got bored and started staring at the shadow of the stage scaffolding in the big overhead canopy. It looked amazingly like Duchamp's "The Bride Stripped Bare." No, I wasn't on drugs. But Sarah's background vocals were very nice. In fact it was the only one where she got to belt it out !!) In Every Dream Home a Heartache (WOW!!!! Lucy's crazy violin brought people to their knees. There was that curious VU feeling again. I could almost hear Lou - Choose a side...to be on...) On the Radio (yeah, ok) Both Ends Burning (We had FUN dancing to this. The Go-Go girls (not Belinda Carlisle), in hot pants intrigued my husband). Tara - ugh. Like it on the album. In fact I love all the slow mellow stuff, but I don't like that stuff performed live. Avalon - I do like this one live. But they only did HALF!!!! Sarah didn't get to sing the "hoo hooo hoooo" part. I was soooo disappointed. I really wanted to hear it. Dance Away - pretty Jealous Guy - ok, fine Editions of You - We had a GREAT time dancing, again. I could't get enough. You have to understand that I never go dancing anymore, now that I am a mommy. I ate it up. It was at this point that they brought out the high-plumed dancing girls. They looked like a Las Vegas revue. I started feeling old. But it was good fun.! The Strand - Over the Top! For Your Pleasure - a nice ending I liked the way the background video showed Bryan's empty mic as the whole band exited, slowly. It sort of left a lingering feeling, a bittersweet parting. BTW - I should say that the "sitting vs standing" debate was not a problem in my opinion. It was a seated venue. And we sat, most the time. However, on the wild upbeat numbers we all stood and danced - a little of both and a nice compromise. Viva Roxy! Show started at 9:15 PM with Remake/Remodel. First album, First song, very appropriate. The set list was the same as the first show on 7/17 except Virginia Plain was dropped for In Every Dream Home a Heartache. Love em both and having been to both shows glad they changed the list even if it was for just one song. Avalon was cut short due to Phil's guitar crapping out for whatever reason. Bryan just ended the song gracefully once he saw Phil clapping instead of playing. Everything else seemed to go off without a hitch. Loved the show but boy does 90 minutes scream by after waiting 18 years. Andy and Phil sound and looked great! But, does Andy have a back problem? Seems to be very rigid or am I missing something? Out of the Blue is Out of this World! What a crescendo! Great job Lucy! TGPT. Nuff said, The glue of Roxy Music. The Cool Ruler continues to rule, without a doubt. I envy the folks who are seeing multiple shows, you just can't get enough! I remember at one point in the show saying to myself that THIS is the BEST band in rock and roll history. (Boy was I enjoying the show!) Met some Avalonians who became immediate friends. Thank you Strimples! I have some pictures from the show and I am willing to share them, just tell me where to send them. Well, now that this dream has been fulfilled, I'll be waiting for the next one. New material from Roxy Music! One can only hope.......................................................... Roxy never played at CBGB-the closest they came was ferry playing solo at The Bottom Line (also a small club). Roxy always played mid to large venues in NYC (Academy of Music-Beacon Theater-Radio City-and once at Madison Square Garden opening for Jethro Tull) john ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 23 Jul 2001 02:27:34 -0400 From: "Dillon, John" Subject: [AVALON] NEW YORK ALERT! NEW YORK ALERT! Good morning, good morning! This is Very Important News For : All Those Attending The New York Show / Pre Show Meeting! Unfortunately we have had to "CHANGE" the meeting place to a new location. The Former place: The Eamonn Duranc @ The Hotel Pennsylvania is CANCELED ! The New meeting Place is now MUSTANG HARRY'S 352 7th Ave New York City, 10001 212-268-8930 Mustang Harry's is just 1-= blocks south of Madison Square Garden on 7th Ave. Between 29th and 30th streets on the west side of the street. Reason for the sudden change? Well, yours truly was in Manhattan Sunday afternoon picking up tickets at the box office. Feeling a sudden wave of "thirst" come over me I decided what better place to check out for refreshment than the Avalon meeting place. Unfortunately I was greeted by a darkened bar, a locked door and a sign exclaiming: "Closed for Renovations Until September 24th". None of which are good omens. Well after conducting some personal investigations and taste tasting I came across Mustang Harry's. A very nice place with plenty of room for warm conversation and a cold beverage. Ask for Niles behind the bar and tell him you are with the party to see Roxy Music and he will set you up straight away. All the Best ---- "Having had a drink or three....."
