I'm off on my hols for 2 weeks from Monday (hopefully not dodging the skud missiles on the Egyptian/Israeli border the way things are going!) so would like to send my best wishes and regards to all Avalon Members in the US and hope you have an enjoyable show(s). Hope the changes to the set haven't dampened spirits too much - Remake -Remodel will revive them don't worry! Don't forget - 90 minutes in the company of RM is worth 9000 of anyone else. You need to be alert though and for heavens sake don't blink as the set is so frenetic (it's almost as if they've got to be somewhere or catch a plane?) you'll miss something. If things were slowed down even marginally and Bryan did more ad-libbing it would probably add 15 minutes to the set so it is value-for-money - there's not a wasted or unnecessary note in the whole show - everything is telling and total solid gold. Where does this insight come from, Niki? How do you know that Bryan doesn't have mundane phone conversations (an activity that is mundane 99% of the time)? Can you tell your construct, Bryan Ferry, from Bryan Ferry's construct, Bryan Ferry, or the "real" Bryan Ferry, should such a thing exist? I liked it better than when I saw them in 1979. I had assumed that the entire Air Canada Centre (18000) would be nearly sold out... (I had been checking and re-checking ticketmaster.ca). But was surprised when the house was only half-sized in a "theatre 180", which is what the usher told me they refer to it as. But it was an excellent, flawless show, the violin solo was everything I had read about, and the band was everything advertised as well. They appeared to be a little disappointed in the response though, and I can't blame them. The crowd was good, but just barely in my book. Of course, since in North America, they are really only cult favorites...no one on this list should expect too much crowd-wise. Dance Away, Avalon, and Love is the Drug are really the only chart- type material over here. Unlike the HUGE impact Roxy had at home and in Europe. Well, the eight 40-45 year old Clevelanders took full of advantage of the ride, the city, and the band that night. NOBODY even dozed off on the long drive back (6 hours), everyone was way too happy that we did'nt miss Roxy Music. I want to go to Detroit and Chicago, but my work schedule won't allow it. Had Roxy come to Cleveland, the crowd would have adored them...damn it. paulclevo Get personalized email addresses from Yahoo! I remember seeing a copy many years ago. They used to make up letters, of course, and interviews with any "porn star" in any such mag must be considered phony unless proved otherwise. But interviews with other peronalities were for real. Doesn't mean the personalities concerned actually told the "truth", of course. Or that the interviewer asked what you might consider to be the "right" questions. It was a wank rag after all! I felt it was a determined attempt to crack the American market. In doing so the band had lost the qualities and edge I really admired. In retrospect, and with a more "mature" outlook (I hope) on their "career plan", I like the album more now than I did then. (Now don't take this as an insult or anything) but I wonder if saying this is a product of listening to the albums after the fact. What I mean is that someone gets into Roxy during Manifesto or Avalon and then goes back and gets their back catalog and says one album is weaker than another after listening to them all . All I know is that I bought every Roxy album on the day they were released (as imports) and I was never disappointed. Sure there were songs that I liked better than others-but I never considered a Roxy album weak until Manifesto-which I grew to love and certainly Flesh & Blood (which I still have trouble with). As they were released they became my favorite album of that moment and sometimes stayed that way until the next album (or the next bowie album). Of course the first 2 were the milestones because they were basically the shock of the new. But no group could sustain that type of brilliance although Roxy sure came close john ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 21 Jul 2001 08:59:33 +0100 From: "Guy Lawley" Subject: RE: [AVALON] Re: 90mins.? After the Wembley concert I saw there was much "short set" chat in the air. I felt it was perfect. Sure, I was left wanting more, but that's a good feeling! I was -- and am -- looking forward enormously to the DVD!! It will be a great thrill to relive the live experience in my own living room. Anticipation is a good buzz in its own right! The only song I felt they should drop, and replace with something else, was While My Heart Is Still Beating. Clearly, they need some slow ones to leaven out the rockers. But I never much liked that one. Mother Of Pearl will be missed, but it was not a great version, IMHO. Too much of the lovely detail of the soundscape was lost in the big arena sound system (at least from where I was sitting). Leaving out In Every Dream Home A Heartache is definitely more of a bummer!!! At least the DVD/video/live album will allow all of us to catch up with all the songs -- hopefully!
