Hi Tri-Tri, and thanks for your comments re the Vids. We're all pretty pleased with most of the finished product, but I'll be glad if I don't see another of those Vids for quite a while ! A few of us have 'lived it' for quite a time, tweaking bits here, changing something there, and spending many hours trying to get the Covers to be very 'Roxy', and swearing at Printers to get the inserts to come out properly, not to mention the endless weekends, many months ago, of our little crew spent in a Video edit suite, doing a splendid job of getting it all together, after ploughing through around 200 odd hours of endless repeats of mostly the same material - trying to get the best bits extracted, edited, and mixed. A special mention too, to the 14 'who shall be nameless' Video clip contributors to this insane project, which started over a year ago. When we first spoke about it - the talk was of the ATGB Tour - not about Roxy Music. Funny how things change so quickly, isn't it ? We're all glad it's out there now though, it took a hell of a lot longer than any of us thought - sincere apologies for that - but we got there in the end, as we always do. Many, many thanks to everyone who has emailed me offlist with comments on the Vids - much appreciated, and we (a few of us - though the others like to remain silent !) are really pleased with the reaction. We did run off a few extra copies - as we knew there would be late orders (not many extra copies though) and we'll see if anyone wants them on our return to normality in August. Then that'll be it. For any latecomers wishing to suddenly order - sorry - orders are now closed - as a few of us are about to descend on the USA for some Roxy nights on the east coast, and we won't be here - I leave in just a few hours, spending time with friends in NJ until the mayhem starts again. I've been putting off having a proper holiday for over 2 years (somehow, Tours kept getting in the way !) - but as the greatest Band in the World, Roxy Music, are back, something made me decide that I should go for it this time, can you blame me ? Thank heaven for credit cards. Someone mentioned on here the other day about the Cilla duet clip - and whether it would make Bryan 'squirm' if he saw it now. Hey, it makes me squirm every time I set eyes on it. I remember, months ago, the first time I showed the clip to our own Mr. Roxyrama, Chris T. - he was peering at it through his hands, which were clasped over his face, in disbelief. Wonderful stuff, in a tacky way. I can almost see it now - loads of people watching that, doing exactly the same thing. Ok, must finish and organise my packing. Following a chat with friends Stateside earlier this evening, looks like I'm Nashville-bound for a few days as an extra visit whilst on hols, so I'm now packing extra tubes of Country Music repellant cream. Will see some of you on the east coast though... It was published the day of the concert, and we find in it a review of the arrival of the band in Santiago and what they said to the journalists. In LA VOZ DE GALICIA and in EL CORREO GALLEGO, the most important local papers, Roxy were two days on the cover (in La voz de Galicia there were nice pics from their arrival, with the luggage, etc.). FERRY: OH, IS PAUL PLAYING WITH US? The british band Roxy Music arrived yesterday to Santiago, where they will perform their only gig in Spain. "The only thing I know about Galicia is the food", assured Brian (sic) Ferry soon after the landing of the band at the Lavacolla airport. He will eat chinese eggs, however. It is the only excentricity that the members of the band have allowed themselves before their performance in Santiago. Even though the sell out of the tickets is doing very well, there will still be some of them this evening. At 10 pm, Paul Young will start the show, although someone was not so sure: "Oh, is he playing with us?", asked Ferry himself. Journalist: Paco Rodrmguez. (On the same page, but written by other journalist): Absolute discretion. That is the motto given by the members of Roxy Music hours before the start of the show in the MULTIUSOS DO SAR arena, the only show they will perform in Spain in their comeback to the stage. The band's arrival of yesterday was, however, noticed by many. Brian (sic) Ferry, Phil Manzanera and Andy Mackay landed with the rest of the players in Lavacolla, a day before the scheduled date and in a conventional flight from Barcelona. At their arrival, all of them reckoned they knew as little from Santiago as from Galicia. "I know the food is very famous", said Ferry, the leader of the band. A PLACE TO DRINK AND EAT SOMETHING "From the plane, it seemed to be a very nice land, very green, isn't it?", added the british singer. However, their main worry was about the night: "I suppose there will be places around here to drink and eat something". The band will remain in Santiago until saturday, when they will take a flight to Belgium. In the capital of Galicia they will perform their only concert in Spain: "It was a decision of the promoter, who told us this was a good place, so we accepted", said Phil Manzanera in a more than good Spanish (he has been the producer of Hiroes del Silencio and Antonio Vega, among many others). As for their comeback on stage after almost twenty years, Manzanera was "very glad, altough also nervous, because you never know the audience you are going to find". He had illusion, he said, as an amateur. "It is great that people appreciate your work after having left it behind a long time ago", he added. Ferry resumed his thoughts with a word: "Excited". Beside them, they will have a de luxe supporter, Paul Young, who will arrive on the same day of the concert. He will give the welcome to Roxy. And this, even though of the doubts of someone, in the band, who had doubts about it: "Yes,I think he is playing with us, isn't he?", asked Brian (sic) Ferry. And he said to a journalist: "Do you know if somebody else is performing tonight?" Except surprises, only they will perform. Manzanera, less distracted, said that for them "it is good that Young is the supporter, though we have never played together". The Roxy Music 2001 World Tour means the reunion of one of the most famous and respected bands of the seventies and early eighties. But it is an incognit about the future as well. "By now, we are focused on the tour till september. We will see later on", said Ferry, leaving a door open for next projects. By now, they have prepared a brilliant spectacle of light and sound for tonight. Journalist: Rubin Santamarta. All I can say is that Bryan seemed to like Santiago a day after... Cheers, Nacho. ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 11 Jul 2001 21:31:35 -0400 (EDT) From: Colleen Matan Subject: [AVALON] you would cry too if it happened to you Since we're all just killing time until we can read the latest, uh, emission from e"man," On Wed, 11 Jul 2001, Johnny Reece wrote: [...] > Someone mentioned on here the other day about the > Cilla duet clip - and whether it would make Bryan > 'squirm' if he saw it now. I am packing a suitcase myself as the videos play and I have to say I sat down and watched that clip all the way through, no shelter needed. It's wonderful in such a non-focused-grouped/image-consulted-to-death way. The couples all on the dance--truly charming. It's all so wrong that it's right, and it makes me nostalgic for those "variety shows" of my youth when enthusiasm won out over image. (forgot to send mail till now.) A truly strange affair. This year I've had a business meeting in Carrickfergus - a mouldy motel in a Godforsaken sectarian hole. I've slid through silken waters in a gondola on the canale grande di Venezia. I've seen Alphaville. I've even seen Roxy Music a few times. But last night was a truly strange affair. I was taking my business partner, Margaret, out to dinner in groovy London town. The air was tight. After several hot days there was a sense that the gossamer skyline was about to break. We cruised crosstown in my racing green S-type Jaguar and found ourselves in the area bordering Holland Park and Olympia. Once or twice a year I like to dine at Cibo's, a wonderful Italian restaurant of that manor, and familiar to Avalon cognascenti for it's credit on Mamouna. Looking for a parking near the restauarant I casually remarked to my partner that Bryan Ferry occasionally frequented Cibo. In that instant we saw the Greatest Living Englishman standing on the pavement, gazing into the middle distance, clutching a mobile phone to his ear. (Cream linen suit, blue and white striped shirt, shades. Looking concerned. Hair just-so, the tousled flecks of silver to match his satge sharkskin, but lacking the shine.) "Wish everybody would leave me alone They4re always calling on my telephone When I pick it up there4s no-one there So I walk outside just to take air" Whilst Margaret seemed genuinely amused by this serendipity my immediate emotion was that of guilt. After the nod of recognition I received at TOTP2 and Dublin I felt sure I would be perceived as someone intruding, nay, stalking, were the eyes behind the aviator shades to pick me out across the ristorante. Ah well, what the hell. I parked my car and staked my place if not in the singles bar then in front table, the windows and doors wide open, the storm brewing. Cibo has around 40 covers, I guess, with about 12 tables. No sign of the maestro. had it been some kind of dream Margaret excused herself for a spot of nose-powdering. I ordered a bottle of Barolo. Margaret returned. "He's behind that pillar - no, don't look - dining alone." "Wine ?" I enquired, "Yeah, I'll check the bottle next pee." The storm broke in a quite cinematic way. Thunder, lightening, hailstones on the awning. resisting the urge to scream Rain, Rain, Rain, we ordered, we ate. For the odd moment I even forgot that I was sitting within four yards of the man who wrote Beauty Queen, Windswept, Your Painted Smile and Mother of Pearl. "Is that lightning exciting ya quite as much Would I could feel it, would I could touch" Each bathroom excursion brought further details from my dining companion. "He's not reading anything. Just staring at the wall." Ha - composing, I thought. "The vino's Italian, Sepultana something, from Puglia." And "He's looking knackered." Hard as I try I can't recall any further details. All I know is that from 8.40 to 10.40 he sat alone, munching, quaffing and, presumably, settling the bill. He then eased his way around our table, the restaurant owner forming a vague escort ahead of the floppy-haired genius, and made his way into the street. I noticed caramel brogues (hand-made ?) and the curious possibility that his linen jacket was a marginally different shade from his strides. WHY is it that the ONLY time he can address fans on his own website is "when something like this happens"? Obviously the people who place obscene messages don't deserve his personal attention, but why can't BF consider sending messages to his fans on an official website other than when he feels threatened by pervy imposters? If Bowie, Fripp et al can manage regular diary pages/messages, surely BF could do it if he wanted? It's not for me to say he should do so if he doesn't wish to, but the tone of his message suggests it's a shame he doesn't get to do this (address fans direct) more often. I agree! I like Psalm on record, but it seems very serious on Stranded and puzzling in its reliogiosity. Is the glam idol, Mr Irony, the master of hedonism, revealing a deeply Christain core? It was an enigma in 1974 when I first heard it and remains one. The version on the video seems very playful to me, which is even more intriguing. The mystery deepens. Is Ferry being serious? taking the piss? bit of both? It's certainly one I'll be watching again and again, & one of the highlights of the vid set for me. Thanks again, Mr Reece (and all you other compilers/contributors)! Videos received in Australia! Thanks so much Reecey - quality everything expected and more. Congratulations on a brilliant job. 'Psalm' was never a favourite of mine, but I just love the version on the video. ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 12 Jul 2001 07:32:56 +0000 From: "Martin Stockman" Subject: Re: [AVALON] Supper with the Maestro All true. - ---------- From: William Sommers To: avalon@smoe.org Subject: Re: [AVALON] Supper with the Maestro Date: Thu, Jul 12, 2001, 5:25 am At 11:12 PM 7/11/01 -0400, Peter Seely wrote: > Is this story actually true? Had this truly come from Mr. Stalkman, er, Stockman, we would know his own meal in such intimate detail as to be able to note ourselves whether the oregano was Italian or Greek in origin. -wfs ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 12 Jul 2001 09:20:21 +0200 From: "the bogus man" Subject: [AVALON] Que vivan roxy music!!!
