To celebrate, we're inaugurating a poll of the best albums of the last 15 years, and you're cordially invited to enter our virtual curtained booth and contribute. Mail us, making sure that 15 Year Album Poll is in the subject line and pick your Top 5, numbered in order (#1 being the best, of course, stupido!). Only albums released between September 1986 and September 2001 are eligible - that means The Smiths' The Queen is Dead (June '86) isn't - and greatest hits, compilations and re-releases are banned. When all the votes are in we'll stick 'em all in a hat and the first out wins all of the final 50. So get voting! (Don't forget to include your proper name, address and a daytime phone number.)" If you've already made up your mind reading the above, e-mail: cashforquestions@q4music.com And the votes from the Southern Swedish jury are: 1. Curtis Mayfield New World Order 2. Everything But The Girl Walking Wounded 3. Prefab Sprout From Langley Park to Memphis 4. Bryan Ferry Mamouna 5. Alanis Morrisette Jagged Little Pill Those the eligible CD's I've spun the most in recent years. A good question, and one that I bring certain distinctions to. When I've pondered this before I tend to think of old vinyl bootlegs and early cd boots (back in the day when they were pressed in a factory, not ripped and burned in someone's bedroom). As a collector, BBC sessions by anyone are always worth getting hold of. It took me about 11 years to assemble an almost complete collection of Bowie's BBC sessions, only to find weeks later that a 4cd boot had just appeared which had everything and more! Thanks to a few repeats in the late 80s I had managed to get a good selection of Roxy's beeb sessions, but my first Roxy boot was a cd version of "When You Were Young" which has a variety of the BBC sessions on it. All the tracks run at the wrong speed (which I soon sorted out) and all the titles are wrong, but the 12 minute version of If There Is Something is incredible, most definitely the best version I've ever heard. I recently got the vinyl version of that cd, and it's a classic bootleg - from the cover (plain white with the title stamped on) with no track list, and the label with bogus titles! The "First Kiss" 2cd set is good because it's almost complete (albeit a little shabby) but it'll never replace that thrill of getting them for the first time. Another great vinyl boot is "Absinthe Makes The Heart Grow Fondle", the majority of which is from the Newcastle 1974 show that made it on to Viva! The other tracks are from official releases, but those live tracks are fab, especially Mother Of Pearl and If It Takes All Night (a great live song, a poor studio track). The Newcastle tracks have been subsequently re-booted on many other boots - "Foolproof", "The Thrill Of It All", "Super Golden Radio Shows 33" and "Interpretation" to mention a few. Finally "Warped Leatherezz", the finest example of Roxy showing that they could conjure up the magic on the 1979 tour. I dismissed it until I heard it, it is an incredibly powerful performance especially from Phil and TGPT. I'm not bringing cd-r's and cd trees into this as I see them more as "collectors recordings" rather than bootlegs in the traditional sense. A whole different kettle of fish! (They did this for the last one as well.) The winning tag is made available at a website so that people can print it out and get it laminated. This time, you could also send the designer $1 and a SASE to get a laminated tag. For what? So that we can wear tags at the concerts and be able to spot each other. One person posted that he would know which people to avoid. =P I wore my tag at two of the shows and people eyed it, wondering if it was a backstage pass. Apparently, if Andy sees you with the tag, he'll try to get you backstage cos he thinks the whole Internet thing is cool. Anyway.... Bry in Venice? 1. Some time ago a Polish guy wrote me, pointing me to his Roxy web page. The page was interesting indeed, yet I can't find the address. Has anyone of you casually seen it and can give me its url? 2. On Bryan site there are some wallpaper photographs and one of them shows Bryan itself on a motorboat in a silken Venice canal. Seems the zone where I live. Does anyone of you know when he took that pic? However, I have seen posts on this mailing list about shows being treed and such and websites for artwork to some boots. I was wondering how I could go about getting some of these recordings (specifically the BBC Broadcast from June 23 2001). While I have no Roxy boots to possibly trade, I have plenty of other bands (but still in process of moving my list to a different webserver). Um, if anyone would care to enlighten me or help a person in need, just let me know =P Thanks! ryan ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 11 Jul 2001 15:11:39 -0700 (PDT) From: Ignacio "Peyró" Subject: Re: [AVALON] Bryan dancing away That picture was the cover of "El correo gallego" paper, the day after the gig. Like Ryan I was wondering how I could go about getting some of these recordings discussed on this list (specifically the BBC Broadcast from June 23 2001). So if anyone would care to enlighten me as well. While I have no Roxy boots to possibly trade, I'd gladly pay cash or selections from my really big stamp collection. Of course, I'd really like to see Roxy Music copy King Crimson and set up an official collectors' club (go to www.disciplineglobalmobile.com to see for yourself), but the postings to this site have really whetted my appetite until then. Hi Tri-Tri, and thanks for your comments re the Vids. We're all pretty pleased with most of the finished product, but I'll be glad if I don't see another of those Vids for quite a while ! A few of us have 'lived it' for quite a time, tweaking bits here, changing something there, and spending many hours trying to get the Covers to be very 'Roxy', and swearing at Printers to get the inserts to come out properly, not to mention the endless weekends, many months ago, of our little crew spent in a Video edit suite, doing a splendid job of getting it all together, after ploughing through around 200 odd hours of endless repeats of mostly the same material - trying to get the best bits extracted, edited, and mixed. A special mention too, to the 14 'who shall be nameless' Video clip contributors to this insane project, which started over a year ago. When we first spoke about it - the talk was of the ATGB Tour - not about Roxy Music. Funny how things change so quickly, isn't it ? We're all glad it's out there now though, it took a hell of a lot longer than any of us thought - sincere apologies for that - but we got there in the end, as we always do. Many, many thanks to everyone who has emailed me offlist with comments on the Vids - much appreciated, and we (a few of us - though the others like to remain silent !) are really pleased with the reaction. We did run off a few extra copies - as we knew there would be late orders (not many extra copies though) and we'll see if anyone wants them on our return to normality in August. Then that'll be it. For any latecomers wishing to suddenly order - sorry - orders are now closed - as a few of us are about to descend on the USA for some Roxy nights on the east coast, and we won't be here - I leave in just a few hours, spending time with friends in NJ until the mayhem starts again. I've been putting off having a proper holiday for over 2 years (somehow, Tours kept getting in the way !) - but as the greatest Band in the World, Roxy Music, are back, something made me decide that I should go for it this time, can you blame me ? Thank heaven for credit cards. Someone mentioned on here the other day about the Cilla duet clip - and whether it would make Bryan 'squirm' if he saw it now. Hey, it makes me squirm every time I set eyes on it. I remember, months ago, the first time I showed the clip to our own Mr. Roxyrama, Chris T. - he was peering at it through his hands, which were clasped over his face, in disbelief. Wonderful stuff, in a tacky way. I can almost see it now - loads of people watching that, doing exactly the same thing. Ok, must finish and organise my packing. Following a chat with friends Stateside earlier this evening, looks like I'm Nashville-bound for a few days as an extra visit whilst on hols, so I'm now packing extra tubes of Country Music repellant cream. Will see some of you on the east coast though...
