As well as the mini-hit 'Sideshow', it contains a rather bizarre version of 'All The Young Dudes', if memory serves. Doreen, I think, started making singles in the late 60s, but later got together with her sister Irene Chanter, for a handful of singles, and the 'First Flight' album, as 'The Chanter Sisters'. Doreen continued in session work (John Cale, Ferry, Manfred Mann, even backing vox on David Essex's 'Rock On' !) right through to today - saw her just a few weeks back on a German Satellite channel, doing backing vox for Van Morrison on a TV special. As far as I know, Jacqui (I spell it that way - as that's how she wrote her autograph) Sullivan continued in Vocal session work - not to be confused with the girl of the same name who ended up in Bananarama ! However, Jacqui was not part of The Chanter Sisters - it was real sisters, Doreen and Irene. Have got a few pics of Doreen and Jacqui from the 75 Tour - not 'stage pics' but 'on way to soundcheck' stuff - will dig them out when I have time. I had not read it until the link was posted to the list. I can scan the photo of Phil smashing his guitar and give it to any website owner that is interested in placing it in his site, so that everyone can see it. Here goes the article: ROXY MUSIC SAVOURED THE TASTE OF SANTIAGO NIGHT IN THE ONLY GIG THEY OFFERED IN SPAIN The band recognized that their comeback is not definitive, and Bryan Ferry said that his new album will appear short after Christmas. "It is the most beautiful cathedral I have seen in my life". That was said by Bryan Ferry, leaderman of Roxy Music, about Roxy's visit to Santiago, where they performed their only concert scheduled for Spain in their reunion after 18 years of silence. It has been a long time which, in the words of Andy Mackay, "seemed like a separation of only a few months". "In our comeback, we feel very confortable with each other", emphasized the lead singer. The band also assured that their reunion is temporal, "only until the 1 of october, when the tour is over", said the guitarist Phil Manzanera. We will see what happens later. Bryan Ferry, however, has taken the first step: his new album will be on sale after Christmas. "Bryan could not come until now, because yesterday he took a longer walk in the city than the rest of us", told Manzanera to the mass of journalists who expected the leader and singer of Roxy Music. He was late, but he at least appeared, and his first words were for assuring that "this (Santiago's) is the best cathedral I have seen in my life". The nice words of the group did not stop there: "I don't know, this city has something magic and full of mistery in it". Equally enigmatic was the setlist for the concert at the Sar Arena. Finally, it was a mix of famous songs (Avalon, More than this) (NOTE OF THE TRANSLATOR: Avalon was not performed, many journalists were wrong about the setlist) and other less known. "That was our idea when we decided to get into this project", said Phil Manzanera. "People only know four or five songs of the band, and it is not fair that the rest remain dead", the guitarist pointed. This was the answer to part of the question of why they have come back together. A NEW TOWN But Mr. Manzanera added more: "It was the first time a promoter was giving us the chance to get together, with a good amount of money and a scheduled tour. We were all free, so why not?". The choice of Santiago had a similar response, but Ferry said: "It is always nice to play in a new town". With the remaining doubt of if they will ever record together again, the three british men reckoned that the fact of the comeback "is a fantastic, exciting experience", and they were surprised about the audience answer in their performances (they will offer about 50 dates until the end of september). "We are also kindly surprised that many bands of nowadays are influenced by our sound, and by this thing, our music can reach to a young audience", told Manzanera to the journalists, and he put the example of his daughter: "A few days ago, she saw me performing live for the first time, and, well, I'm her father!". What about her reaction? "She told me: You old man!", joked Manzanera. "It is pretty difficult to actualize our sound -said Ferry-, but with the technology of nowadays our covers are much better". Strangers On other side, you could see many stranger's car identification numbers around the Sar Arena in the first hours of the afternoon; they had come from Barcelona, Valladolid or Bilbao. They were too young for being tourists, but also for going to a gig like this one. "The praises that bands as Pulp or Radiohead have made on us have made that the youth begin to know our music", said Bryan Ferry, a man who is know very far of the outrageous clothing of the seventies and has turned to a dandy-like english look. "Now I see our seventies esthetic a bit ridiculous", he laughed. The spectacle was complete. Journalist: Rubin Santamarta. Note: This article must have appeared the day after the band left Santiago; it is a review of the post-concert press conference Roxy gave. All the reviews on spanish and local papers were very nice. Roxy's new compilation is starting to chart well in Spain. All grammar mistakes and unproper words have been made by the translator :), I hope you'll excuse me. Jackie Bird is also a singer (she worked with Fish) and she is only in her late thirties, which would have made her about 12 or so at the time of the Siren tour. Plus the singer with Roxy was 1,000 better looking. This is true. I honestly don't know of anything down by the Fleet Center. I know it's down by the wharf, and therefore close to some pubs, etc. We could probably even go to the North End to some Italian cafe and then to the Fleet, but I don't know of specific places. Arrghh. Well, I think I'll just try to pick a cafe by the Fleet from a guide to Boston. If someone comes up with something better by then, we can always change. See you! I vaguely remember some of them from trips to the Garden (a moment of silence please). However, I haven't been back in my adopted hometown for a while. Caliterra Bar & Grille (Italian) 89 Broad Street 556-0006 The Commonwealth Fish and Beer Company (Brew Pub) 138 Portland Street 523-8383 [I think I remember this place--is the one with the huge brass tubs downstairs? If so, it may be a good choice] The Four's Restaurant and Sports Bar (Sports Bar/Pub) 166 Canal Street 720-4455 The Grand Canal (Irish/American) 57 Canal Street 523-1112 The Harp (Irish Bar/Pub) 85 Causeway Street 742-1010 Irish Embassy Pub (Bar/Pub) 234 Friend Street 742-6618 McGann's of Boston (Irish/American) 197 Portland Street 227-4059 Paddy Burke's Pub (Irish Bar/Pub) 132 Portland Street 367-8370 Rustico (Italian) 85 Canal Street 742-8770 You Beantown denizens might be able to offer some insight. The Fanueil Hall area is close by too, but I have no idea what's there anymore. Alas, Columbia, Maryland does not offer nearly the choices a few blocks of Boston (or even DC proper) does. On the fake lake (home of the world famous geese-herding sheepdog) in the Columbia town center, just a few minutes drive from Merriweather Post, there is a Clydes which would probably serve the purpose--thoughts from locals? There are I think 2 other restaurants there as well. I don't think there's anything but a food court at the Columbia Mall. Ah, suburbia. Colleen P.S. I can't offer to organize this since I leave for Bermuda in a few days and return just before the DC show (I know you all feel my pain). ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 07 Jul 2001 08:07:45 -0700 From: William Sommers Subject: Re: [AVALON] The Sirens At 12:15 PM 7/7/01 +0200, Mats Andersson wrote: >> Has Doreen Chanter done anything since she was a Siren? > Her name is also on a Joe Cocker live-album from 1990 The web is a wonderful place (well, sometimes). http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Diner/2674/chanter_doreen_a.htm http://www3.justnet.ne.jp/~duka/rock/discography/doreenchanter.html -wfs ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ End of avalon-digest V6 #290 **************************** ======================================================================== For further info, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: info avalon-digest
