Latest as of today, Friday 7.45pm : All UK VHS Pal orders (apart from a couple of 'no address' ones - step forward Jim McLean and Gareth McGinley - though I'm still ploughing through paperwork to try to find an address for you somewhere) went out last post Thursday, by first class, so UK people should now have their Videos (depending on all the vagaries of the UK postal system, naturally). By all means let me know now, Brits, if yours arrived today (and what you think, of course - after a year getting all the clips together - by all means send your feedback on them). We sincerely hope it's been worth the long, long wait. ALL continental VHS Pal ones - Germany, Netherlands, France, Italy, Spain, Norway, Sweden, Austria etc, and also Australia too - were all sent out this afternoon. NTSC Vids - almost half the orders to USA also sent out this afternoon, by air mail. Balance of NTSC to USA, Canada, Japan, being sent Monday morning - also by air mail. Because the accounts for the Vids actually broke even for the first time a week ago (at long last !) - the profit from the few extra orders since then is being used to send foreign packages by Air Mail instead of Surface Mail, to enable many of you to receive the Videos sooner than expected. A sensible move, I thought, I hope you agree. Hoping for no delays re many Vid sets going abroad - but I'm sure customs will have a look at a few - they'll see the title 'Penthouse Perfection' and a pic of Julia, and think "aha ! - let's check this" ! Boy, will they be disappointed - though they shouldn't be, of course. Instead of seeing what they are suspicious of, they'll see some clips featuring the greatest band on planet earth instead. My friend worked at Penthouse magazine as a designer about fifteen years ago. Penthouse stopped using the "Penthouse" on their package labels since so many art & photo files were "disappearing" in transit. The problem cleared up when they changed their shipping name to something innocuous as PPLtd. (or something like that). I was thinking about one of Ferry's choices of album titles - The Bride Stripped Bare, in relation to Ferry's choice to do cover songs throughout his solo career, and his relationship with Richard Hamilton. Marcel Duchamp was one of the great modern artists of the 20th century. He was believed to be the "inventor" of conceptualism, creating works that were intended to be perceived both visually and as concepts, as early as the turn of the century. Some such works include, La Mariee Mise A Nu Par Ses Celibataires, Meme (aka The Bride Stripped Bare By Her Bachelors, Even, aka The Large Glass), Why Not Sneeze, Rrose Selavey?, or his numerous Boites en Valises, Fountain, and numerous other ready-mades. When I say conceptual, I mean that the works were invested with meaning sheerly by virtue of the concepts behind them. The ready-mades were a good example, a snow shovel or a toilet (fountain) picked from a store window and signed by Duchamp, symbolized the arbitraryness of the art object as an invention, or an original masterpiece. These "art works" were examples of Duchamp saying, "I can make a toilet seat into an original masterpiece just by picking it and putting my name on it" (actually, the signature wasn't even Duchamp). The Boites en Valises were another example of conceptualism. Throughout the latter half of Duchamp's career, he duplicated his earlier works in miniature, had them mass produced a la Jeff Koons, and packaged them in boxes or suitcases, the Green Boxes (Boites Vertes) or Boites en Valises ( Boxes in Suitcases). This repackaging of something invented earlier was, as Duchamp put it a "delay." ( A delay of originality, of the consummation of art, the artistic moment, etc). He referred to the Bride Stripped Bare as a "delay in glass." Richard Hamilton is interesting because he translated many of Duchamp's notes from the Boites en Valises from french to english. I just wonder how much Ferry's choice to do covers, was a conscious decision, influenced by Duchamp, to challenge the idea of the artist as a creator of originals - a delay in sound. More of my opinions about the influences of art on Roxy Music later.... Someone mentioned having a 2 CD live Ferry set from Le Grand Rex. Is this a bootleg? Where can it be obtained from? And when are all the Ferry/Roxy video backtitles going to make it onto DVD? You'd think with Roxy fever being at its highest in 18 years, the copyright holders to all those videos would be tripping all over themselves to get this stuff out on DVD to cash in on the Roxy reunion. I'd love to have "New Town," "Total Recall," etc. on DVD. Considering that even the one Ferry DVD that is available, "Live in Paris," is pretty hard to get hold of, based on my own experience and that of others on the list, it doesn't seem like the label is making it very easy for people to buy this thing, so hoping for them to put out old titles on DVD is probably futile. And last but not least, someone asked about some special promotion a certain ticket agency is doing. Like the Evil One himself, they are best not named, lest they appear. Anyway, I have no idea what this promotion may be, but I feel the need to warn list members to beware of any kind of promotions from them. Ten years ago, I was ordering tickets for a concert and they sold me some special promotion where I paid like $18 extra, but I was supposed to get a deluxe souvenir book when I arrived at the venue (the Rosemont Horizon, as it was then known, in less corporately sponsored days). I got to the hall and no one there knew anything about it. Many days and many phone calls to the ticket agency later, they said the "special souvenir book" was just the tour program, and they were taking a list of those who didn't receive them. I put my name on the list. Weeks and months later when I still hadn't received it, I called them back and was told that all those had already been sent out. It was a deluxe bureaucratic runaround. Every time you call, you have to talk to a different person, and they're all as dumb as a box of rocks, even the alleged management. So, be warned...don't trust those guys. All they're out to do is separate you from as many of your hard-earned dollars (or pounds!) as possible. And yes, I'm STILL pissed about the book thing, ten years later. It's not the only time they screwed me over, but it's the one that comes to mind at the moment. And why do we still patronize them? Because they're a monopoly and if you want tickets, you have to deal with them. Our government was too chicken to take them on (although they went great guns for Microsoft, go figure), Pearl Jam tried to take them on and fell flat, etc. Friends tell me I should just boycott the shows and not give them any money. Of course when the show in question is Roxy, that's not an option. Even when it's not Roxy, what am I going to do, sit around the rest of my life and not see any more concerts? The best policy is just not to give them any more $ per order than you have to, to get the ticket. No special promotions, no entertainment guide subscriptions, etc. Forgive the rant, my friends. I just thought everyone should know.... When You Were Young is an incredible early recording of Roxy circa '72-'73 with a fascinating duet between Ferry and Eno on Sea Breezes and a very eerie air raid siren begins The Bob (Medley). I could be wrong, but I sincerely doubt that Roxy was backing Cale on the live version of "Fear Is A Man's Best Friend" on When You Were Young. The sound doesn't match the rest of the album's recordings. I think the song was recorded at a Cale gig, and mistakenly added to the Roxy master tape and left there. I also believe that there was some animosity between Cale and Roxy, or at least Ferry (something to do with Cale gate crashing a live radio interview with Roxy, and being rather noisily flatulent). There's a CD version of "When You wer Young" called Re-Make/Re-Model - Live on BBC Radio 1972-1973, but it doesn't include the Cale song. Fear is an album that Cale released in 1974, and has Eno & Phil Manzanera listed as "Executive Producers." Besides Cale, Manzanera and Eno, some of the other musicians include Archie Leggatt, Fred Smith, Richard Thompson, Brian Turrington and Michael Des Maris. On backing vocals: Liza Strike and Doreen Chanter, both of whom also backed up Bryan on Another Time, Another Place. Doreen Chanter was one of the Sirens on the Siren tour (you can hear her "distinctive" vocal on "Both Ends Burning" on Viva), and she also sang the duet with John Wetton on "Same Time Next Week" for Phil's Diamond Head lp. Who was the other Siren and why are not their names found in the credits for Viva? NP Phil Collins, Tomorrow Never Knows (the 801 version is better).
