I would have to say Colleen is a bit more on track here regarding what was rehearsed and what has been heard. From what I know they did go in with the idea of 3 or four off each album. About 35 songs were originally chosen or spoken of. After a rehearsal "shake down" we ended up with an original set list of 20 with a few more classics gems held in abeyance. What are they? Well you might as well put the blow torch and pliers away because no on is talking. As an adjunct, I personally do not see the set list taking this "suspected" F+B / Avalon u turn over here in the states. In closing I quite frankly think one could not be more pleased with the fine spread that has been laid before us. Just one question? Is it time for New York yet? Hi Dan: Sorry to disagree, in as much as I like Bryan's version of this song, nothing beats the original. I just about cry everytime I hear it. Maybe it's the production or the chords, it just pulls at my heart. I feel and have FELT this song since it was first released. Along with In My Life, also on Rubber Soul, John was getting very "soulful". Very deep songs that make you think about who, what, when , why, in your life. John sang exactly what I was feeling at the times I was feeling it. Imagine and Jealous Guy did that same thing to me later. He is sorely missed. I'm glad Bryan chose IOL and JG as his Beatle's covers. Very smart and very knowing. No slamming just a friendly exchange of thoughts. It is an in-depth review of Roxy Music and their presence in beautiful town of Santiago, Spain. This comes to us , with a great deal of work and "adventure", from resident Avalon member in Madrid, Spain: "Ignacio "Nacho" Peyrs" npj23@yahoo.com An great on the spot perspective of the events leading up to the show, up to and including: Phil _____________ his guitar. What? Read on and enjoy Special thanks again to "Nacho". Because of size it has been broken down into several parts. Part One Follows: <><><><><><><> Well Hello to All, It seems that I was the only Avalonian ambassador at the Santiago concert of June 29. I want this to be a review of the concert, but also a review of other things you might want to read, my personal impressions, etc. First, I have never seen Roxy Music before, I read all the reviews trying to imagine how it was going to be. But I still could not actually "believe" I was going to see "Roxy Music" live in Santiago. It was as if someone told me "you are going to get married in Santiago". I am? OK, but how will it be? Could it happen to me? How will it turn out? I just had to see it with my own eyes. I didn't know what to expect. I can tell you that I expected no more than 50-100 shouting fans in the whole arena, as the concert was given almost no publicity. That wouldnt be bad I thought, "It's going to be like they were performing in my living room". Santiago is a very, very small city in northern-western Spain: it's facing the Atlantic ocean in a region called "Galicia"(1). In the local newspapers, Ferry pointed out that they wanted to perform in Spain, and the promoters told the band that Santiago was the place. Santiago is far from every town of Spain, except Santiago itself. More than being "just a fan", I happen to like the whole Roxy aura a lot and not only for their fabulous music; but also the elegant life style, a little bit of humor, pastiche, irony, sentimentalism. I am convinced they were right at every moment, from their first album to Avalon. I also see an evolution in it. I can say I enjoy both "Take a Chance With Me" and "The Bogus Man" equally. I don't want to expose my Roxy philosophy here but I just want to say I had an "over all" vision of Roxy Music in my mind and I hoped this concert would not change my way of seeing them. Well after all the expectations, I was happy inside to be making this effort to see Roxy, but that effort started with 8 hours of riding the bus. This was like my own personal pilgrimage to both Santiago as well as Roxy. I had to say good-bye to my sisters and parents, who felt happy because they saw I was happy. My father asked me again "who's that band that makes you doing such a strange thing?" (I use to be a quiet man). My cousin told me to count the hands that were elevated at the final ".Did the Strand!" I had that picture as wallpaper in my PC, thanks to vivaroxymusic.com. After traveling all night, I walked out of the bus station of Santiago at eight o'clock in the morning. At the station, I had bought a local newspaper (El Correo Gallego), and I had to smile when I saw in the cover: ROXY MUSIC ARRIVED IN SANTIAGO WANTING TO TRY "GALLEGA" FOOD; THEY WILL FILL THE "SAR" ARENA TONIGHT WITH 8000 PEOPLE. Inside the paper, there were pics of Bryan and Phil in the airport, with the gallega crowd looking at them and not exactly knowing who they were. In another local newspaper, "La voz de Galicia", there was a big pic of Bryan in the cover of the paper. The papers said that there was much expectation as Roxy Music arrived in this small city of Santiago, Spain. End of Part One From above 1) 1) The accent of that part of Spain (they have their own language, different from Spanish, called gallego) is specially tender, and until you are used to it, you think they are near to the tears, and you are tempted to take your handkerchief and give it to the man, so he dries his tears, but it's only the way they speak. I didn't want to take a taxi or a bus (oh please, not another bus!), so I decided to walk: the city itself is small so it could not be very far from here, could it? At that time of the morning, the streets from old Santiago were empty, and the city was full of mystery within the mist. I have always felt more than respect for a place where people have gone as pilgrims for ages. The legend says that the relic of an apostle is there, and that's the reason why, specially in the middle age, people from all over Europe have gone there. There's always a sense of self-discovery in pilgrimage, a man who wants to improve himself. That is respectful, I think. From the time of the middle ages, hundreds of beautiful, small churches still remain in northern Spain, as does the Santiago Cathedral (2) which Bryan said was "the most beautiful one" he had ever seen, but I suppose he's very polite. So, Italians, please take note to see what he says while in Milan :) ! As I didn't have much to do in the whole day, I decided to look for the Melia Araguaney Hotel, a five star rated hotel in which the band was staying, as I had read in the press. I knew that it was common that fans waited outside the hotel to get a picture, an autograph, or just to see them. I found the hotel and got inside the bar, which was deluxe and delightful, but I didn't stay there. I went out and I leaned on a mailbox for about an hour, so I could see the two doors of the hotel and the entry and exit of the parking. I once saw a movement of a curtain, which seemed very rock star, somehow. I had doubts about asking in the reception, is there a way to see the band, are they in their rooms, or they've gone somewhere else? Well, after an hour or so, I realized that I perhaps looked suspicious, so I took a walk. When I got back to the hotel and sat at a terrace, looking to the main door. I asked for a cup of coffee and waited there, like a patient fisherman. About half later I saw a guy stepping out the hotel, that definitely didn't look like a galician. He was tall and bald, and wore short trousers and a T-shirt. I thought, "if this guy is not Zev Katz, he must be his twin brother", so, as he approached me, I told him "excuse me". He looked at me through his yellow sunglasses. Then I said: "you are the bassist, aren't you? Zev Katz". He said, "oh, yes". And then I started my speech: "Oh, it's good to have you here, thanks for coming to Spain". He said something like "oh, it's our job". Then I asked him to sign his autograph. He asked me to spell my name. "t's Nacho, like the Mexican food, it's a short name, though", but somehow he wrote "Nazho", with z, but I think that a man whose name is Zev KatZ has a certain inclination towards Z. He wrote: Nazho, gracias!, and signed with a Z. I then told him if there was a chance to see the rest of the band, and he told me he didn't know, for they were being interviewed by the press. Zev was very polite to me, and looked pleased for my request of an autograph. He shook my hand without being asked for it, when I recognized him. At the end, we said a warm goodbye. During the morning, I saw him about three or four times more. End of Part 2 ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 6 Jul 2001 02:54:02 -0400 From: jmdillon@mindspring.com Subject: [AVALON] Review : ROXY MUSIC In Santiago Spain, Part 3 The in-depth review by "Ignacio "Nacho" Peyrs" from Santiago, Spain, Continues : <><><><><><> Bryan Ferry In the main door of the hotel there were many TV journalists coming and going, and I had the temptation to talk to them, but I was strangely ashamed. At that moment, the waiters were placing tables and chairs outside the hotel (Araguaney Hotel, it took me hours to keep the name in mind, it doesn't sound galician at all). I decided to move there, and I asked for another cup of coffee, in order to stay awake for the concert (I slept very badly in the bus). Five minutes later, a small bus parked two meters away the main door of the hotel. I was all shook up. I had seen a pic in the papers in which the band were moving to the hotel in a bus like that one. I thought, "Oh, I must be fast if I want to greet them", and I paid for the coffee and drank it in a minute. Somehow my legs started to tremble. I as a bit ashamed, because I was acting like a teenager (well, I'm 20). I saw the bellboys carrying small bags to the bus, but these cases were not proper of Roxy. They had Iberian stickers on it, and some stickers with the word "crew". Then I saw a man in uniform, and many stewardesses. False alarm. The bus was for the plane crew. My legs relaxed. I asked for another cup of coffee; I had nothing else to do but hope and wait. Then, two minutes after that, Bryan Ferry was quickly stepping out the hotel door. When I saw him (and I must say he was walking very fast) I stood up from my chair, and I said "Sir, oh, sir". I suppose that was better than calling him "Ferry", or "Hey, Bry", or "Hi, ya". I could see the surprise on his face, when he had seen me. I had the face of "I've recognized you, and I am very moved to see you". He was with that young man who always goes with him (black wavy hair to the neck; is he Jim Lawn, who's he?). He stopped and I told him "It's great to see you, I really appreciate your work". He said "Oh, thanks". I told him how good it was to have him in Spain, and I gave him my pen and the white sheet of paper with the autograph of Zev Katz. I was somehow stupid, and I did not know whether to open the pen and give it to him or just to give him the pen so that he could open it. I then somehow ended up opening the pen and giving him the cap. He took the pen of my right hand, though I'm not sure. When he signed, I told him "I wish you all the best" (I said it because I felt it, it was the only thing I could tell him), and he laughed and told me (but very loud) "Oh, gracias!". Then he walked away. I must say now two things about Bryan Ferry. His physical presence is amazing. He is tall, but it's not just that. He is elegant. He was just normally dressed up, but he was still elegant. He really had a supernatural elegance about him, as if he wasn't exactly of this world. Now, I am not blinded by emotion. I could have easily said this if he had not been a rock singer. As he was signing the autograph, I looked at his parrot-green tie. He wore it with such grace. This type of elegance seems not to depend exactly of him. I also do not think it has much to do with the fact that he is a star or something like that. It's a thing of manners. It leaves what true elegance leaves: some virility, some softness. That's what I think. I also think that his appreciation would have been bigger if he had been less elegant. Because some people have only seen that part of him and could not manage to get past it. The important thing is, however, his music. I had nothing to do after the autograph (I have never had autographs before, but I think that was the correct thing to do). I followed him and his friend for about a minute, but then I thought it may not be very nice of me so I stopped. I noticed he looked very surprised at a shop window. When I saw the window, much later, I understood why: It was full of pin-ups drawings! I was not mistaken. As I was sending a message from my phone ("I've seen Bryan Ferry!"), I noticed that Phil Manzanera and Andy Mackay were walking out of the hotel. I crossed the small street (they noticed I did), and I stopped them with a "excuse me". "Oh, it's great to see you, I really appreciate your work, and I thank you for coming to visit us". Andy said "it's a pleasure". They were very nice with me. They signed autographs, and then Phil talked to me in perfect Spanish: "Listen, where could we eat some tapas, here near the hotel". Then, an old man who had seen me asking for an autograph told him where to go; I had said I did not know because it was my first time in Santiago. The old man didn't know, of course, who they were. I was going to tell them that the terrace of the hotel was very good for tapas (because it was). We shook hands and said goodbye. They walked the down the street and sat in another terrace. I could see them from where I was, though I didn't want them to notice my presence. I have always wanted to give them something of me to show them my thankfulness for their music. I thought, maybe I could invite them to a tapa, but I didn't know if they were going to like it, so I went to the bar and asked the waiter how much it was the tapas of those two English men. That's not uncommon at all in Spain, to invite someone, without notice. The waiter told me that they were going tohave lunch, and I was scared for I thought, "oh, they will drink expensive wine, or something like that", but it was not expensive at all (less than 15 pounds, 2800 pesetas). Of course, I did not want them to know who had invited them; they're rock stars and I'm only a student, but I wanted to give them as a present something they liked, and well, it was a present of their choice! As I walked away, one of the waiters was telling them "a young man has invited you", and Phil Manzanera and Andy Mackay had their mouths open of surprise, looking for "the young man", but I had already gone away. Was it crazy? Would you have done the same? I think it was something nice, and I did not want to annoy them, I think it was an "elegant" way to show them that someone appreciates their music. Well, I invited Manzanera and Mackay to lunch. Few people can say that! :) End of Part 4 ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 6 Jul 2001 03:04:13 -0400 From: jmdillon@mindspring.com Subject: [AVALON] Review : ROXY MUSIC In Santiago Spain, Part 5 The in-depth review by "Ignacio "Nacho" Peyrs" from Santiago, Spain, Continues : <><><><><><> Phil & Andy II At 2:00 PM I had to meet a cousin of mine, who went to Santiago on that same day and was going with me to the concert. He will spend the whole summer in there, working. He is not a big Roxy fan, but he is nice, happy, etc (the opposite of me),and wanted to go to the concert with me. When we met, I told him, "oh, do you want to see two thirds of Roxy Music". He had brought his expensive camera, and told me, "oh, you could take a picture with them". I didn't know what to do. Maybe they would recognize me as "the young man who invited them". Anyway, when we went there, they were on their way back to the hotel, and I told them, "oh, excuse me, would you mind that he takes a picture of me with you all?". Chris Spedding was with them (though, as he came later, I did not invite poor Mr. Spedding! That was better for my wallet, though :) My cousin took two pictures of the four of us. I don't use to smile much in pictures, but in those two pics, I look like a smiley! Manzanera had said before, "oh, you are the guy who invited us, thank you very much". Andy thanked me as well, "it was very nice, we'll remember it". I said, "oh, I did not want you to know, it was just a way to express how thankful I am". Phil said "Yes, I know, but I saw you as you were walking away". I was surprised, for I thought that they would have already forgotten me, that would have been normal. Andy seems to be more serious, Phil looks more like a "rock star". Chris Spedding also gave me his hand to shake, Phil had introduced him to me "oh, he's Chris Spedding, a wonderful guitarist". I said, "Oh, of course, I know". In the picture we were all smiling, specially Manzanera and me specially me :). My cousin was also happy, and he shouted "goodbye", with a funny Spanish accent.
