Unfortunately, there is a grain of truth in it. Let us address the grain. And then dismiss it. What you witnessed was an isolated incident where one sole Avalonian was unable to share four shows that a non-Avalonian associate had given him under the stipulation that Avalonians may not tree it. It is unfair to tar all of Avalon with the brush of "elitist" when the non-Avalonian was trying to keep the shows from us. Obviously none of us can either be held accountable for off-list activities or off-list associates. What you see far more frequently on this list: People generously sending shows and memorabilia without demand. People starting CD trees for no profit whatsoever. People anonymously replying to occasional public "ISO" posts. It is true that the CD trees, when the CD trees occur, are limited time and limited number offers. This is because nobody, least of all me, desires to spend every evening copying CDs. In my case this is a very lengthy and tedious task, especially when you have a grumpy computer. They are, however, free to all who apply before the deadline. Nobody starts up a CD tree for glory or honor. They do it because they want to get music out there. (There may be a sense of "Cool, that's *my* artwork," but that's probably it.) The only time I have ever denied someone a place in the tree is when the deadline has passed, and even then I assure them that second branches will begin eventually (as Judy Kaufman began this week with a new branch of Boston Pop, which I started) and that I will be doing a "last call" for copies later in the year (which I intend to do in December for everything I've treed in 2001). And let me assure you, and anyone else who might use the "elitist" brush to attack Avalon, that I personally have never had anyone on this list specifically refuse me a product, and indeed if anyone on this list is unaware that I will freely copy anything they give me (barring a legal reason why I shouldn't), then that "anyone" is probably deaf and blind. There is a reason for "have-nots." Consider them "don't-have-yets" and the reason becomes clear. I don't have a complete Glasgow 1982 since my original CD was defective. I am confident that at some point I shall receive a new one, at which point it will join the queue to be made available to everyone. I genuinely regret that you witnessed the unpleasant "grain" seen earlier. However, the archived postings are very much available for you to see, and you will see that in the last five weeks, trees have been announced for TOTP2 and The Sting of El Ferranti, along with the second branch of Boston Pop, and plans are being hammered down for (I believe) the BBC Glasgow broadcast and some other recent concert, I forget which. Also, some weeks ago, I went out and bought some commercial boots cheap and offered them in exchange for transcribing old Roxy articles for my website in order that all of fandom could enjoy them. Should you, or any other outsider, perceive these as the actions of an elite agency, then I must remain dumbstruck. I will, however, first welcome you to Avalon with open arms and tell you that I hope you find many enjoyable conversations and debates herein, not to mention a very positive and upbeat community where quite a few of us have made valued friends and contacts. I very much look forward to finally meeting several of these friends at the Atlanta party this month, which, like the CD trees, is open to all. I just had the following article accepted for publication in a Milwaukee (north of Chicago)-based "alternative" paper. The Chicago Avalonians have threatened to withhold the ingredients for "The Maine Thing" cocktail unless I post it, so I had no choice: THE THRILL OF IT ALL The Return of Roxy Music By Paul Bodine "This is Roxy Music. It's great to be back!" When Bryan Ferry so greeted a Dublin audience last month cynics could have been forgiven for concluding that another dinosaur band had begun elbowing its way up to this summer's rock reunion jackpot. With white elephants like the Eagles, Beach Boys, and Neil Young already being trotted out for a final run, Roxy's reunion announcement both elated and worried its still staunch fans. All the disquieting signs were there-a reunion for a band gone from the scene twice as long as it had ever played, a new CD of repackaged hits, a set list devoid of new material. Ferry only fanned the flames of doubt by toying with critics' preconceptions. When asked why he was rejoining guitarist Phil Manzanera and saxophonist Andy Mackay after 18 years, Ferry offered, "Well, the cynics would say it was for the money, of course. Actually, somebody did come up to us and make us an offer. . . . When they put it like that, we couldn't think of any reason not to do it." Had Britain's most original band sold out? Whether a cynical run for the money or not, the 50-date tour that will bring Roxy Music to Chicago on July 30 kicked off in the U.K. and Europe in June, reaches North America on July 16, soldiers on to the Pacific Rim in August, and then wraps up with a final set of European concerts in September. The third incarnation of Roxy got its shakedown cruise on British television in May, and their evident rustiness still left many unpersuaded. There were few doubters back in 1972, however, when Roxy Music bolted to overnight acclaim with "Virginia Plain," the first of ten Top Ten U.K. singles. Over the next five years they earned a reputation as the premier "art rock" band of the decade, the genius loci of the New Wave movement, and the admitted influences of artists as diverse as the Talking Heads, Kate Bush, and Radiohead. From the campy eccentricities of their first two LPs to the burnished surfaces of their last, best-selling album, "Avalon," Roxy's music evolved rapidly and in a startling range of directions, all presided over by Ferry's ironic cool and lyrical intelligence. As he choreographed the band's progress Ferry also continually revised his own image, mutating from retro vampiric crooner to the tuxedoed romantic stalked by a vague air of doom. So when Roxy Music disbanded briefly in 1977 and finally in 1983, it was clearly because Ferry had wanted it to. In the nearly two decades since then Ferry's career has peaked, valleyed, and--more recently--disappeared, but the topic of reunion has always been brushed aside with an unexpansive "who knows." Then two years ago Ferry rattled Roxy's partisans by releasing "As Time Goes By," an album of unfeigned interpretations of classic songs from the 1930s. The period-style acoustic arrangements and absence of Ferry's trademark irony caught many fans off guard, but the album was nevertheless a hit, even earning Ferry his first Grammy nomination. In the promotional tour that followed, Ferry was startled at how warmly audiences responded to the handful of Roxy songs he included. A Roxy reunion began to take shape, hastened by such memento mori as the death of Ferry's close friend Simon Puxley and the near crash last December of the 747 carrying Ferry and family on holiday. Aside from the financial inducements to re-form, Ferry insists that "The reason for getting together now is that we'd never found dates that worked for all of us before, when we were all available, simple as that. It just felt like the right time, suddenly, to do this. . . . Is there risk involved? I suppose so. . . . I suppose we're going to find out if Roxy's music is still alive. . . . I'm hoping to make this as pleasurable as I can for everybody, and to make it a celebration of that material." Clearly, it would be asking too much of a trio of men approaching a collective 160 years to celebrate that material with the same energy they used to write it. But a recent BBC concert broadcast seems to confirm the almost unanimous verdict of the tour's reviews: rather than phoning in a greatest-hits package Roxy Music is playing with the kind of enthusiasm and hard, edgy sound that silences skepticism. The set list is skewed heavily toward the band's more uncompromising early material, and fans who discovered Roxy through later, polished hits like "Dance Away" or "More Than This" may chafe at a show clearly pitched toward the band's core faithful. To be sure, hits like "Love Is the Drug" and "Oh Yeah" are accounted for, but they are outnumbered by such resolute non-hits as "Ladytron," "For Your Pleasure," and "If There Is Something." Ferry has further appeased the band's loyalists by recruiting Roxy's legendary drummer Paul Thompson, whose urgent attack gives numbers like John Lennon's "Jealous Guy" the backbone they always needed. The ten-member touring band is rounded out by guitarist Chris Spedding and the hot young violinist Lucy Wilkins, whose thrilling solo in "Out of the Blue" makes it easier to forgive the absence of Roxy's original violinist, Eddie Jobson. Manzanera's guitar work retains its bite, Mackay's saxophone remains stylishly sinewy, and Ferry's voice communicates as expressively as ever. Ferry may never win the credit that is his due for the sheer quality and craft of his body of work, but Roxy Music's tour at least affirms that, as critic Sarah Dempster put it, they can still sound "like the bravest, smartest, strangest band that ever was." Roxy Music appears at the Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Illinois, on July 30. ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 02 Jul 2001 19:51:55 -0400 From: David Neuhaus Subject: Re: [AVALON] Roxy Collectibles I believe it's Las Vegas. TOTP2 is a 20-minute "EP" containing the five performances the band played in the studio on May 23 and were broadcast in early June. The tracks are Virginia Plain, Love is the Drug, Out of the Blue, Jealous Guy and Do the Strand and the quality is awesome. This CD is being treed in North America by myself and by Heather James. You may contact either of us if you want the show. Heather is much nicer than I am, whereas I get bored out of my mind at work and will appreciate your e-mail more than she will. Otherwise, you can get your free copy from either of us. I currently have eight people in line to get copies and I have already started on them. I will take nine more North American orders at this time. I didn't start this tree so I didn't make the rules. I would, however, be made happier if anyone getting a copy from me would agree to: a) not sell it for profit and b) not hoard it either. Please watch follow-ups and contact me *off-list* if interested. And are all the instructions necessary? They are >longer then my tax forms... >Rockin' Rod To anyone interested, I hope this answers any questions you may have about "Boston Pop". From Roxyrama: http://www.roxyrama.com/releases/vinylboots/vinyl/bittersweetdouble-frameset. html From Grant (who seeded this tree): The CD is a Roxy Music show from Boston, Feb. 1975. On double vinyl, it was passed around under the title "Bittersweet," but since there is a better known CD boot by that name, I've made new artwork for this show with the name BOSTON POP, which I will distribute to people on the tree. The sound quality's probably around a 7 of 10. The mic wasn't right up next to screaming yahoos, but the band is slightly muffled at times. In light of recent events, I did feel it was necessary to post such detailed instructions. We have many new listmembers and some may be new to *trees* as well.
