I guess it all depends on what you deem as "darkness." I don't think singing about death, wearing black clothes, lots of eyeliner, and assuming an alienated, nihilistic world view is the only way to be "dark." In fact, one of the darkest people I know has an impressive collection of patterned rayon shirts and makes me laugh more than anyone I've ever met. The darkness many of us sense in Roxy--even as I speak only for myself--is much more subtle, and yet more pervasive, than that. It's an undercurrent, and something intrinsic in the mix of the personalities and especially in Mr. Ferry's lyrics. It's drugs, yes, and sex, yes, and love. But it's not just that negative darkness. It's that inviting darkness of decadence, of living on the fringes, of the forbidden, of the descent into fixation or even obsession. > But with Roxy Music, even when they sing about "Trash," or "Bitter > Sweet," I feel like I'm listening to the perspective of the worldly > intelligentsia, the voyeur who flirts with the raw and decadent side of > life, but never goes too far into the gutter - darkness as one of many > themes that is sprinkled throughout their work just to give it depth. It's of the last Wembley gig (Sunday) and is the only press review I've seen of any of the Wembley shows. Apart from the slightly inaccurate reference to them finishing the show with Virginia Plain (although I suppose that was the end of the "main" set, pre-encore), it's another very positive review. I am really pleased by the appreciative and excellent reviews that the tour has received in the press (Reecey's posting of the NME article says it all really). Anyway, I can't find a link to the Daily Mail review, so it's reproduced below for anyone who's interested. On a separate note, does anyone know whether tickets for the Milan show are on sale yet (Cecilia? Danilo?). There's nothing on the Filaforum website. I'm seriously tempted.... Best wishes Jane - ---------------------------------------------------------------- Daily Mail 29 June 2001 - Review of Wembley Concert 24/6/01 "Their loyal fans, who once sported tuxedo jackets and cummerbunds, or satin evening dresses, are now more likely to buy their clothes from The Gap. In other respects, however, nothing much had changed as Roxy Music triumphantly concluded their first British tour for nearly two decades. This concert ignored most of the soft, romantic songs recorded in the Eighties and concentrated on the more inventive, art-rock material of the band's Seventies heyday. Unlike the Eagles, who sleepwalked through their recent Earls Court show, Roxy Music had clearly put some thought into their comeback. Led by Bryan Ferry, Roxy were able to include four out of the five members who had recorded For Your Pleasure, their classic 1973 album, with only Brian Eno missing from the group's most potent and influential line up. Helped by five extra musicians, one backing singer and a troupe of feathered dancers to add the necessary kitsch, Roxy Music were superb. Saxophonist Andy Mackay excelled on Song for Europe, while drummer Paul Thompson provided the show's powerful pulse. But Ferry, still perfecting his camp stage persona of a beleaguered lounge lizard, commanded most attention. The slick singer has always been an awkward dancer, but his vocals retain their velveteen beauty and he crooned his way impressively through In Every Dream Home a Heartache and Mother of Pearl. The show featured singles such as Both Ends Burning, Love is the Drug and the band's cover of John Lennon's Jealous Guy, the latter complete with Bryan Ferry's whistling solo. But Roxy resisted the temptation simply to rehash their biggest hits: album tracks such as Do the Strand and Editions of You were two of the most energetic highlights. Finishing the show with Virginia Plain, the kind of hit single that Blur's Damon Albarn would love to write, Roxy Music delivered a far more intriguing set than most fans would have realistically expected. "We're off to conquer the world now" was Bryan Ferry's parting shot. On the evidence of this show, it would be unwise to argue with the man in the silver lami suit." - --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 29 Jun 2001 15:02:53 -0700 (PDT) From: cecilia Subject: Re: [AVALON] Another rave Review not yet. And only horrible stanky South African wines to take the pain away. Might as well use illegal drugs here... Avalonians seem adept at spotting me but are too polite to speak to me - save those two horn-dog lads from Edinburgh - I was wearing a fabulous red strappy dress and was showing off my Roxy Music notebooks and my last car's licence plate -Illinois -"ROXY 72" -" ROXY MSQ" and "CPL 593A" were taken. (I met their owners at Bryan's last gig '99 in Chicago while waiting for him behind the venue - another mean feat as the venue was in the dodgy Uptown district.) I called while in Notts but only got your service. The head security (El Jefe to you - nice Blofeld scalp-top and muscles)- man in Dublin remembered me from backstage at '00 MOTORHEAD in Chicago AND GAVE ME A PASS!! Met the wounderous Paul who remembered me from my "E"'s and Byran who remembered "that Lady from Chicago with the "Jealous Guy" acetate (NEGATIVE COPY OF 7" VERSION from Strawberry Studios plated in alunimum)-"You know that this is a different version, dear" and signed it. "E" me for Manchester backstage gossip and goodies for trade.
