Was at the Video suite yesterday morning, hassling to get a definite date for getting all the remaining batches of Vids back, to mail out to you lot ! Good news on that front, as the entire last 4 batches (VHS Rhapsody, VHS Penthouse, NTSC Rhapsody, NTSC Penthouse) are being delivered to me next Wednesday afternoon, 4th July. Therefore, a fun time ahead this coming weekend of putting covers & inserts into cases in preparation, addressing rather a lot of envelopes, and filling out reams of those little green customs forms. So, mail-out frenzy it is next Thurs 5th, Fri 6th, Sat 7th - the whole damn lot will be on the way to you. All USA and similar far-reaches from here will go by surface mail. Sincere apologies for the delay, it's been a rather busy time, but I place the blame for the delay partly on the Video suite being extra busy at this time of year with loads of orders of 'summer wedding videos to copy'(really), and partly on a bunch of fifty-something guys deciding to tramp the boards at the same time. Not that I'm complaining much about the latter. Enjoy the Vids. Reecey... PS This will stand us in good stead for when we start on the next new Video, the following week. (JOKE.) Buch" Subject: Re: [AVALON] This thing called Roxy First of all, that was a great post, Jocelyn. Very evocative. But no Casanova? It's too bad. That is one of my very favorite songs. Roxy Music - I could only apply the word darkness to them in the subtlest sense, not even the Bogus Man or Dreamhome make me recoil the way a truly "dark" band does. Those songs are much too ambiguous to be dark, and Roxy Music always seemed just too...together. Maybe it's that I don't understand quite what is being narrated in "Bogus Man," or else I'm just too jaded by the kind of music I knew as "dark." I always equated darkness with bands that were trying to be obviously dark, such as Nurse With Wound or Ministry or the Swans or the Velvet Underground or anything Stiv Bators ever did. Then there were acts that weren't necessarily trying to be dark in the goth sense, but just were dark, like any of the early punk - New York Dolls (because of heroin, and because they just seemed to be permeated with rotten, dirty decadence of New York) or even Richard Hell, because of his sort of aggresive street-kid persona that never really seemed like an act. Lots of other early punk bands were dark, obviously the Germs, Sex Pistols, even X. But with Roxy Music, even when they sing about "Trash," or "Bitter Sweet," I feel like I'm listening to the perspective of the worldly intelligentsia, the voyeur who flirts with the raw and decadent side of life, but never goes too far into the gutter - darkness as one of many themes that is sprinkled throughout their work just to give it depth. I always saw Ferry as more voyeuristic than gonzo. Sorry about the tangent. And again, nice job, Jocelyn. You really captured the mood. What exactly did he say? On a similar theme, has anyone ever seen Bryan do a 'Parkinson' type TV interview in the UK? I'm convinced he did one circa 1980 on a Saturday night Russell Harty show or suchlike. I just saw in the Boston paper an ad for the July 17 show. It read July 21 sold out and they will be performing many of their classic songs including Avalon, More Than This, Both Ends Burning, If There Is Something and Love Is The Drug. This song list would have been true had this same ad ran earlier. We will just have to wait and see.
