I felt strangely uneasy. A virgin trip through the dark netherworld of retro sci-fi detoured via 20's glamour. You've got me girl on the run around, run around. Nearly 30 years later I'm still running all around town. But in Dublin the strange uneasiness returns for the first time in tours. Can they do it? Should they be doing it? Maybe I shouldn't be doing it. Disappointment is a heavy burden to shoulder. Would the doyens of cool leave me cold? The curtain gave no clue of what to expect, the double headed insignia of the Austro-Hungarian Empire replacing the single headed Speer influenced eagle of the scarlet draped Rainbow Roxy years. The lush ambience of South Downs swept over us, a false sense of building intro. The curtain was up, the thoroughbreds were at the line and they're off! A statement of intent. No lurching soloists on this entry, a band in full flow, cracking it out evenly. Powered from behind the skins by a man with enough energy to light the entire national grid. Ah and there was our stick insect, now metamorphosed into a full blown jazz-girthed honker. The bug-eyed guitarist (unfortunately bearing an uncanny resemblance in the tour programme to the Yorkshire Ripper) now a genial giant in maharishi scarf. That voice still disjointedly unique quivering from behind the keyboards. The so-called charasmaticless tuxedoed performer returning to the lounge lizard glitz of yesterday wrapped snugly in one of Anthony Price Prince of Chickens latest fab raves. Looking good, sounding fine. The old Roxy drama trotted out from the sidelines in the shape of PVC'd bereted walkers for Street Life, the holier than thou mothers toying seductively with their pearl necklaces for Mother of Pearl, the Lulu like ludicrousness of the Both Ends Burning boppers stamping out the forest fire of madness raging on stage and finally the high stepping chorus line of Love is the Drug and Do the Strand. All the old moves were there, only this time they were a little older. The Editions of You Andy duck walk encouraged from the front rows to become just "Andy! Duck!" The wobbly Ferry one legged keyboard playing, he's going....he's going. The additional bars to let our man make it back to the mike. No longer do we clock Mr F's shoe size during See La Goulou, as he sedately offers a knee-up. The new stage craft of Manzanera's manic solo on Ladytron resulting in him losing his guitar strap - every night. Oh it's a pantomime! The whole set a jubilant jig through the Roxy catalogue, top heavy on the early years with lip service to the Flesh and Blood and Avalon collection. But unfortunately diametrically opposed to the audience demographics. But what of the not so bit part players? Zev Katz an ideal foil to TGPT dynamite playing. A Bond baddie in Telly Savalas skin. Leaping lovely Lucy Wilkins a fan that stumbled on stage, picked up a violin and avoided the bouncers for the entire set. A whirlwind performance. Juliet, allowed little chance to sparkle other than in her sequined boob tube but a valuable jewel non the less, and Sarah Brown only given full reign in My Only Love where her silken diva vocals were allowed to soar and lost when only used to fill in F's failing higher register. And the inimitable Chris Spedding. The most bewildered man on stage. Caught yawning and feeling the effects of carbonated liquid on more than one occasion, but making his craft look effortless, doe like eyes looking to Phil like a lost puppy looking for approval. The man in black who once could take on a pack of mods on Brighton seafront, now as menacing as a mechanic on a trip to Graceland. And that word menace. Where was it? Make no mistake, Roxy can rock with the best of them. Better than most. But it was a jubilant, up beat, almost poppy return. There was no darkness. Just light. No Bogus Man, no Casanova, no Bitter Sweet, no Thrill of it All. Even the eeriest of all In Every Dreamhome was too full, the sparseness overtaken by years of tiered perfection. And no new arrangements from the brilliant Colin Good who transformed Chance Meeting and Sunset so innovately during the As Time Goes By Tour. Danger was the mood that originally tapped me into the sinister world of Roxy Music, today they are established, safer, acceptable. But non the less enjoyable. This was the Chinese meal of Roxy tours. I loved every concert, I savoured each mouthful, but 20 minutes later I was left wanting more. Roxy are still the drug. Hey, Midwestern Avalonians- I was driving from Chicago to Beloit the day before yesterday (don't ask why...) when I saw it along I-90: A fullsize Billboard advertisng the Allstate arena show. Yes, a highway billboard (west of the airport) with the faces of Mssr's Ferry, Manzenara, and Mackay (and Sade--they didn't get the whole thing to themselves) smiling down at commuters to the western 'burbs. Never thought I'd see the day... Andrew, thankfully back in Chicago ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ End of avalon-digest V6 #263 **************************** ======================================================================== For further info, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: info avalon-digest
