I did'nt catch his surname. I was disappointed, because I read a previous concert review by someone in the group who referred to the support act sounding like The Cranberries. Joshua played (solo at the piano) from 20.00 to 20.25. Roxy's show started at 21.20h The hall was'nt sold out, thats correct, but I don't know how many tickets were put on sale. I'd guess that it was probably around 80% sold out. Nevertheless a great attendance for various reasons. I was last there in 1992 to see U2, and even then the hall had free spaces. For Roxy's concert, the sitting was structured like a horseshoe, with standing room in the middle. The cockpit was obviously in the centre, way back from the stage. H. Soetemann" Subject: [AVALON] RM Munich indepth REVIEW Do I ever wonder more than words could say??? Yes. This is what you probably weren't waiting for - my impressions on the Munich show (I returned only last night) from row number one. I thought it all was "a big hoax - hehehe" (B. Eno) until SOUTH DOWNS faded into that good old party chatter and the curtain was removed, to reveal Roxy with Bryan (and Colin, of course) on keys (moving to centre stage and back) playing a great version of RE-MAKE/RE-MODEL, a bit shorter than the original, but con brio. STREET LIFE ensued, during which I found myself in tears (not for the last time during this show), being so moved by the fact it was really ROXY MUSIC playing there. During LADYTRON Phil was going wild on his solo, absolutely spellbinding. Andy's oboe was a bit back in the mix at first, but this showed it was a performance by human beings, not a lifeless affair. WHILE MY HEART IS STILL BEATING benefitted from Manzanera's and Spedding's guitar atmospherics, as well as Thompson's drumming, which gave the later material a more hard-hitting feel. OUT OF THE BLUE, Lucy's great solo, Julia Thornton on keys for this. Paul Thompson drove it along with his drums. I loved Colin's piano intro to SONG FOR EUROPE, which emphasized the Europeanness of the song. During Andy's solo at the end, Bryan was standing at the left side of the stage, face turned to the curtain in his white tuxedo, every inch the man who lived the regret expressed in the song (yep, I know some might say, it's all a bit cheesy). MY ONLY LOVE - Ferry on keyboard, singing very heartfelt and soloing on keyboard - those impressionist tinkling lines make him a unique keyboard player, I could listen to this for hours -, before Spedding kicked in with his blue-ish solo (no, Sara Brown's soul vox were unnecessary here, but she was good otherwise). OH YEAH - BOTH ENDS BURNING, both excellently played - IN EVERY DREAM HOME A HEARTACHE featured Colin on spooky organ, Lucy doing violin sonics, Ferry, with his silky voice, giving a wonderful rendition til' the band comes in and lots of people singing the backing vox. TARA - so touching with Andy's saxophone and Lucy Wilkins' violin (the only other musicians were C. Good on piano and, maybe unnoted on the list before, J. Thornton on keyboard pads). In tears again. During MOTHER OF PEARL Manzanera broke a string, but was quickly provided with another guitar to join in with Spedding for some minimalist guitar licks during the second part, Ferry giving an excellent performance, whilst Julia Thornton provided detailed percussion (xylophone kicking in after the "a simple tune" and staying). The acapella line was done twice, incidentally. JEALOUS GUY followed, Bryan's vocal and whistling in very good form, Paul's drumming giving it more of a hard edge. Bryan took that organ solo on EDITIONS OF YOU, after which they inserted some Spedding soloing as well, so Bryan could return to the mike in a relaxed way. Lucy twiddling the knobs making me not miss Eno. VIRGINIA PLAIN - first encores LOVE IS THE DRUG (Sara Brown delivering very good harmonies) & DO THE STRAND. Then, we watched them all walk away to the dense and spherical sounds of FOR YOUR PLEASURE, as mentioned before on this list, a great way to end the show, displaying where Roxy come from, the treated piano delay repeating as Colin Good quits the stage after Ferry, Mackay, Manzanera et al. had departed one after the other. The curtain came back on, INDIA was played from tape (as outro), and it was all over. I knew from this list what was going to be played in all likelihood, but to finally see them in real life was one of the most overwhelming musical experiences I ever had. They're all in good form and it is clearly evident that this is a band not in it for the money only! It was so wonderful to see them, Ferry, looking a bit exhausted at times, but very involved, sometimes very moved - his inimitable phrasing and quirky stage moves (his voice features less shouting nowadays, for sure, but his velvety vocal cords enhance the melancholy aspect of the music so well), Manzanera being better than ever, as if he had waited for years to excel in those songs again, Mackay, reserved but awake, with a hint of irony now and then (I seem to have observed), Thompsons driving drumming and and and - I could go on for ages but will stop now. It's a bit sad when you remember this is the last chance to see the greatest art pop band of all times, and they were very rocking, certainly this must be a better touring band and set than on all the "2nd era" (Manifesto and onwards) tours. The audience was quite enchanted for the most part, although probably not everyone was expecting the emphasis laid on early Roxy, but this was superb in my mind. A wonderful show and worth travelling to Munich. I am happy to see them again in Berlin and Hamburg in September. I should really stop now. If you've read this far, thanks - Christian ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 28 Jun 2001 12:38:19 +0100 From: "C. Yuk! Having to vomit, after having one's eye pricked out, is an additive injury to be avoided at all costs. Perhaps, all is not safe - beware of anyone revving a drill who is dancing in front of you at a RM gig - just might be Neil Jones, D.D.S.! ;0) KBP ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 28 Jun 2001 14:26:07 -0000 From: "Andrew Shearer" Subject: RE: [AVALON] glasgow boot name You can't have "Pathetic I Know" as a name! >From: Jocelyn Fiske >Reply-To: avalon@smoe.org >To: "'avalon@smoe.org'" >Subject: RE: [AVALON] glasgow boot name >Date: Thu, 28 Jun 2001 15:02:01 +0100 > >How about > > > >Glasgow Kisses and Boomerang Misses > >or > >Clyding So Far > > > >Pathetic I know > > > >-----Original Message----- >From: tommy peters [mailto:tom@cpl593h.fsnet.co.uk] >Sent: 28 June 2001 13:58 >To: avalon@smoe.org >Subject: [AVALON] glasgow boot name > > >"Just another night with the boys" . You could have spend your time better, Christian. After the gig we went to the artists-exit and after half an hour waiting they came out. One by one, walking to the bus. So we had time for a little chat with everyone. And they took the time to pose for a picture. They were all very nice and relaxed. Julia even recognized us from earlier gigs, she is so sweet. We were right in front of Phil during the concert, I was wearing the Siren-T-shirt, maybe you saw Renate & me. Thanks for your excellent review of Munich. My review will soon be at www.beam.to/remake-remodel . So, come to the Ahoy', Rotterdam, September 13th. It will be unforgettable, kind of A Mad Affair, including an afterparty of Re-make/Re-model somewhere in Rotterdam. Every night was special, they never played the songs the same. All the solos were always different , (very unlike the Avalon-tour). I had a great time with many of you Avalonians. You were all so very nice people I will never forget you. (I won't forget the Roxy-gigs either of course).
