I thought it was a great performance of an excellent selection of songs. I have a question, though, for anyone who has watched the DVD AND has checked out any of the RM shows currently in progress. There are several songs that are common between Bryan's last solo tour and the current RM tour(Oh Yeah, Out of the Blue, et al). How are the two versions of the same songs comparing? I really liked the DVD but am hoping that RM is rocking out a little more(at least that's what I would expect). Anyone have an opinion on this? Thanks. Watch this space! With this in mind, I'd like to make a small proposal regarding CD trees. This seems to be the first official confirmation (as opposed to the suggestion of a possibility) that a live album is forthcoming. Until we know the content of this album, perhaps the BBC2 Glasgow broadcast -- which wasn't the whole show anyway -- should be the last CD tree for the time being. Obviously it wouldn't do us any good, and waste a lot of time, to pass around an audience recording of (say) Newcastle, should the live album turn out to be a full recording of Newcastle. Perhaps we should just see what's coming out officially before we close the gaps. (Other than Dublin, of course. Since that show wasn't professionally recorded, we could fill in that gap if anyone wants to share.) - --G. _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com ___________________________________________________________________________ The subliminable footer says: To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 27 Jun 2001 14:20:48 +0100 From: "terrypaulrigz8c" Subject: Re: [AVALON] Three songs... I am assuming (not presuming, not knowing) that when Sam Phillips was promoting and producing records by Carl Perkins, Elvis Presley and Jerry Lee Lewis, his intent for the audience was something other than sitting down politely and (as recent concertgoers have attested) complaining about people dancing. If you're going to argue that point, then state a counter-argument or get off the pot. Otherwise, what was the point of that stupid post? Complaining that I've dared express an opinion without solid evidence from the source? I mean, do you actually have a contrary opinion, or were you just looking for a scrap? It's obvious that many people want to dance, clap, whatever at a concert. It's also obvious that there is a reason why people pay more money for a better SEAT. For a better view and a better concert experience in their way of thinking. Neither is better, each is different. Concert promoters who are aware of the difference create different seating arrangements for different bands. There is even a concept of General Admission, imagine that! A concert where everybody pays the same and everybody gets a chance to stand and dance or whatever. There is also an infrequently used dance floor format, where people can get up and DANCE! Imagine that! The Roxy shows are not General Admission, nor are they Dance format. They are reserved seating and people pay for a chance to sit in a good seat and see the show. You have to consider the band and the audience. Andy no longer duck walks. The majority of the people I saw at 5 Roxy shows were over 30, at least. Quite a few grandmothers, I might add. For my case, I'm over 40, yet I like to dance. However, I respect other people's rights. Nothing is more annoying than getting a good seat with a great sight line to the stage, and then having 50 people from the cheap seats rush into the aisle and stand for the entire concert in front of me. Or, you're 50 feet from the stage, just settleing in and from the first song, everyone in front of you jumps up. You've just impacted my rights to see the show, which I paid for. At punk shows, I want to stand and dance. At geezer shows, I like to sit and watch, get up and applaude and sit down again. As for a few in here that talk about 'how it looks' when people sit during a show where 'they think' everyone should think like them and dance, I say that you need to get a little self-confidence and you won't care how you look. And, with a little experience, you might respect other's rights to enjoy themselves as they see fit. I saw Roxy at the NEC B'HAM and yes it's a much harder ( thanks Paul & Phil ) sound than the BF DVD, in fact it's just more ROXY MUSIC. Am I the only one who thought the DVD was a wasted opportunity?. No extras, very short and poorly filmed. - ----- Original Message ----- From: To: Sent: Wednesday, June 27, 2001 1:43 PM Subject: [AVALON] Bryan Ferry in Paris at Le Grand Rex(domestic)is out! > Hi all, > > Just wanted everyone to know that BF in Paris at Le Grand Rex is now available domestically. How are the two versions of the same songs comparing? I really liked the DVD but am hoping that RM is rocking out a little more(at least that's what I would expect). If only this were a Led Zeppelin list... but it's not! No, THIS particular band caused me to trek across to the outer fringes of London, not once, not twice but THREE TIMES! You've heard about it from others already, but here's what I thought... FRIDAY - never been to Wembley before, so seeing as we were coming straight from work we decided to take the bus (we being me and Kirsty) which took forever! About 70 mins later we arrived at the Wembley complex where we kept going down the wrong roads, then finally at the arena shortly before 7.30pm, finding a group of dodgy looking gents loitering outside. Oh sorry, the usual Avalonians! Wemberleeeee - what a dump. So, why was there a lacklustre feeling to Friday's proceedings? My own particular reason is that I'd been at work all day and although I tried my best to enjoy it I was a bit tired, and more than that, the security were putting me off! The Bob Hoskins look-a-like steward was pacing up and down ALL through the show, he and his cronies were doing their best to stop people having a good time, and although they never had reason to apprehend me (because I'm so well behaved) they were still very off putting, their heavy hand techniques ruining it for many. Nevertheless, Roxy put in a good solid performance, but not quite hitting the highs of Sheffield. I was on the 7th row so was able to take in the whole thing a bit more and spent most of the night watching TGPT. The journey home was a drag - 90 mins by bus and taxi, from North to South-East London. Note to self - DRIVE TOMORROW. SATURDAY - checked the map, fairly straight run, I just have to fight my way through central London. I spent the day really looking forward to this one, a Roxy tape played in the car as we followed a vague route to Wembley (follow the brown road signs). The car park may well have been a steep #8 but it was well worth it to avoid the hell of public transport! Tonight meeting in a bar beforehand just up the road, Sherrington's - a curry house with cheap drinks and friendly staff. The carpet and general decor was very similar to my gran's house c.1978. The buzz outside the arena was good, so what happened inside? The most static audience I have ever seen. As previously mentioned, the Dutch party and various Avalonians were having a great time in the block A4, but as far as I could see the majority of people in A3 (my block) and A2 remained seated, the few who wanted to have a good time were targeted by the miserable stewards, and if they didn't have a go then the miserable buggers in the audience did their best to spoil it. I knew that this situation had the potential to really wind me up especially when the guy behind insisted on kicking me and slamming my seat into my legs all the way through, but I was defiant, I was there to have a good time, enjoy my favourite band and sing along with them AND I DID! Unfortunately the evening was ruined for many people, even Bryan was getting pissed off with the situation. A very good performance though, depending on how much "other things" affected your enjoyment. A few comments heard throughout the show: - - "the stage was better for Whitney". - - "he didn't do that one with Jerry Hall singing, you know that one?". - - "I wish George Michael would do something". Oh dear. Special mention must go to the hideously out of tune intro to For Your Pleasure, with Ferry coming in on completely the wrong key. SUNDAY - the final ever Roxy show in the UK? Who knows, but what I didn't know was that I had a front row seat for this show. Would I survive? It wasn't the security that bothered me but being in very close proximity to the speaker stack did cause concern, especially the thought that TGPT may hit his skins soooo hard that it would extract a lung from my body! It didn't, but I was breathing well afterwards ;-). From the first note of Re-Make/Re-Model the audience was up on its feet (as far as I could see) and Roxy responded by turning the most powerful and accomplished performance I have seen or heard on this tour, from start to finish an absolute triumph. Andy was controlled and confident, A Song For Europe and Tara both high points for him. Phil was well up in the mix for a change, the solo for Ladytron wilder than ever, contrasting with the sparse but stylish twang on For Your Pleasure. Bryan's voice was stronger than it had been so far and he was dancing, laughing, playing off all the other musicians, he even did a funny little dance round Andy as he lifted the roof off with his Editions solo. And then Paul Thompson. He has been consistently brilliant but even more so on this night. He is the glue that holds Roxy together, the engine that drives them on. Without him the sound would not be Roxy, it'd be Ferry with special guests. And then it was all over. The three nights at Wembley may have revolved around the same set list (so rigid in fact that you could set your watch by it) but it was incredible to witness how different the performances were. I thought by Sunday both myself and the band would be a bit tired, but absolutely not! It was the opposite, I'm just left wondering what I'm going to do with myself this weekend... It was great to meet everyone, some for the first time (in person at least) and some not for the first time! Let's go round again... (If only this were an Average White Band list. But it's not).
