My very simple opinion on the matter: It is a rock and roll concert. The only reason those seats are there are for you to periodically rest your feet during the slow songs. If the lead vocalist sits down to play piano, then you sit down. If you sit down while the lead singer is dancing, then you will look like those squares at the Rainbow Theatre during the "Editions of You" clip in the Total Recall video. (unless of I know there is a lot of disdain barely hidden on this list for Mr. Ferry's solo work, but as much as I am a fan of The First Five, I really really love the song "Boys and Girls." It's often weird to see lyrics typed out--I always "read" this part as You've got no sense of fun But you know I've won It's, as my friend Neill likes to point out a phonological ambiguity, and that colors my own hearing of the song. I think the woman--if it's a woman Ferry is singing about and not himself--is much more complex and interesting than just a painted coquette. I don't think the only, or even the natural, foil to the shy, decadent, vulnerable, dark persona Ferry presents in his music is a woman who lives only on the surface and only for pleasure (but not to say that the latter doesn't play a role). Because I always hear "one" as "won," and because "you're no fun" is often the natural response to someone who has been thwarted in some endeavor, and because I believe Mr. Ferry's sense of irony is alive and well, I've always thought of this lyric as rather darkly humorous, ironic, and languid. He's chiding her, but after his victory. And we know she's let him win. Then again, I happen to think the most, uh, satisfying seductions are ones which involve a (playful, to be sure) sense of mutual capitulation, so you should salt my interpretation to taste. But,oh at last, I can take these bloomin' high heels off and get back into my lurex trainers. After two weeks suffering for their art, my crimson tipped tootsies can discard the entire foot care department of Boots and breathe a welcome sigh of relief. Ah the pleasure and the pain... how sweet. Now where to begin. After returning to 1,054 e-mails (I kid you not) I have been thankfully reminded of nearly every step of the journey via M. Reece's unusually lengthy opus/ae, so I won't bore you with the details other than a few memory meanderings. How I've survived locked in a car for the best part of a week with Johnny Reece's raging libido I don't know. If it's not swimming pool eyed waitresses (spawn of the undead according to Ivor) it's "come on Fiske, get your camera away from Andy and shoot off a couple of the lovely leggy brunette high-stepping right there!" Then of course there was Ivor. Unbeknown to you brethren our Ivor is a man of many voices (most of them the same) as we found out. As we wend our way cross country, he moved effortlessly from a deep Dublin brogue to Northern Irish at the non existent border ( identifiable only by the pay before you dispense petrol you bastards sign), and then through every bloomin' Irish county dialect. Mike Yarwood meets Alan Partridge. And Chris. Lovely, lovely Chris who was elected saddest man of the afternoon as he proceeded to sing My Little Girl note and lyric perfect. We Four Whistling Amigos amused ourselves for hours (well days really) tickled by synchronised incontinent cattle, tooth destroying kids sweets, unfeasibly massive Causeway meals and the fact that Speddo seemed to get more and more gassy as the tour progressed. And you know, I've never had so much fun. These 3 are a joy to travel with and I hope you never get the chance to find out for yourself because it would mean I haven't got a seat in the car. Great memories too of Trez, Raymond and Vanessa brow beating me into experiencing the Dublin Cultural tour with a visit to a wonderful old Dublin tearoom and a trip to see the Book of Kells (and a fab designer clothes shop). The concern for my failing health from Mister Suave Martino who encouraged me to try a herbal remedy- Black Velvet, by the pint. I didn't feel any better, but at least I didn't care. The prank pulled on Fedder Stockman Inc as they wittered on about Ferry out Enoing Eno as South Downs followed on pre gig from Music for Airports/Film/Spare Room only to find it came from us. That was actually a tribute to Jonathan who campaigned so long and hard to have this as the first Roxy number. Damn, missed an opportunity to clean up on the betting stakes there. The standing around done up like dog's dinners in the middle of the scuzziest dockland pub in Dublin and being reminded of the shot of Ferry drinking with the Geordie regulars in his ex-local in Jesmond. Oh, and on and on and on and on. Every moment a treasure so rare. Every step of the way littered with portends. The Roxy Cafe just outside Carrickfergus, Virginia Pl. round the corner from our Glasgow hotel. and best of all Amanda Queer appearing at a gay Newcastle hotspot. The regret that I hadn't replicated my special Eskimos and Geordies T-shirt at Newcastle (I could have really cleaned up!) All the lovely lurking lurkers whom I suspect will lurk no more who introduced themselves to me around the country. And as we were drawing to the end of line, the bonkers Dutch, all the Davids on the list, Ole, Betsy et al. And of course, my partner in crime John O'B - I wished you lived in London mate. Names too many to mention, but all have a special place in this pantheon of Roxy history. And as for the concerts themselves, I think that requires a separate post. Now, please excuse me while I pop over to Bryanferry.com and sort out those little gits who had a go at me in my absence - oh, life is good!! I guess the irony of the statement is important (didn't irony sort of come into fashion in the 80's anyway?). This is great news as it will give Virgin another crack at totally f***ing up the distribution, as they did to great effect with the non-release of Le Grand Rex. Maybe they will play a blinder and release only on Betamax, now that would narrow the target audience. Now don't forget punters, ask the shop assistants if they have a copy UNDER the counter as it sure as hell will not be on display (and forget asking in a Virgin store as that would be silly wouldn't it!) Then again on a lighter note they may have sacked the responsible distribution manager like a dog. Do you really want to discuss, here....on the list....the contents of what I REALLY contacted about? Jeeeze! I don`t!! After you posted your terms my only off list comment to you in regards to trades was that I wouldn`t trade with you under such terms and we parted with my stating I wouldn`t bring this up again and assuming you would let it drop as well. I then contacted others off list, who ALSO know what we REALLY talked about, and asked them to also drop it. At this point, it`s a good idea to let this whole episode die out once and for all before this goes too far! I`m deleting all messages on this subject from here on out. Have a life!
