Roxy Music reduced to this. A stockbroker, a plumber and his mate. So times are hard are they, Bry? Relatively speaking, of course. And Phil, you seemed to be doing okay for yourself. Okay, so you chanced it once before, and with Manifesto just about pulled it off. But it was a close call, and if you looked laughable on Top of the Pops - coolly glam dudes turned minor celebrity squares - take a look at yourselves now! Apoplexy in the front row, quite likely. Sorry if this has already been mentioned, but at Wembley on Friday (22/6) there was a notice at the entrance saying that the concert was being filmed for TV/commercial purposes (the standard sort of wording about audience consent to being filmed etc..). It wasn't there on Sunday night and I definitely spotted extra cameras on Friday (ie other than those being used to project the scenes on the backdrop), including at one point one precariously balanced above Colin Good's head! If it *was* filmed then I hope the footage is used - live video/DVD coming up? I certainly hope so - although nothing will be able to capture the magic of actually being there. I only (!) saw 3 shows and they were outstanding - far, far better than I ever dared hope back in those damp, dark days of winter when the tour was announced. It is clear that real effort has been put into making the gigs special - style, lighting, set design etc. On Friday I took my niece along (age 15). She loved it - said it was "classy". In particular she was enthralled by Andy's sax and oboe playing - which is interesting, as that is what first struck me back in those early days when I was about the same age. Contrary to some comments here and elsewhere I don't think Bryan's voice has gone - yes, it's different and deeper, but definitely still there and I thought he was singing well, especially in Mother of Pearl and SFE (glad the sore throat scare proved unfounded - although when he spoke on Friday there perhaps was a hint of him having a cold). Everyone was on top form - it is wrong to single out anyone as it was a total group performance. There was certainly no loss of atmosphere on Sunday despite the smaller audience - if anything there was something "extra", the sheer exuberance of the band was catching and they seemed to be thoroughly enjoying themselves. It was good to hear Bryan's "thank you" speech for the end of the UK leg (and he definitely said something about "hope to see you again soon" - wishful thinking?). I am not ashamed to say that I felt a shiver down my spine and tears were pricking my eyes as, one by one, they left the stage on Sunday night. I hope it's not the last time, but if so - what a memory. Sheer magic - thank you Roxy Music. My very simple opinion on the matter: It is a rock and roll concert. The only reason those seats are there are for you to periodically rest your feet during the slow songs. If the lead vocalist sits down to play piano, then you sit down. If you sit down while the lead singer is dancing, then you will look like those squares at the Rainbow Theatre during the "Editions of You" clip in the Total Recall video. Jane, Thats great news about the filming, I look forward to the DVD/CD, but a shame about the loss of ITIS & MTT which of course will not bein it. I was sorry to have missed the last show in the UK, but I may have witnessed the last airing of MTT ever, at B'Ham the previous Sunday. - ----- Original Message ----- From: Jane Collard To: Sent: Tuesday, June 26, 2001 1:59 PM Subject: [AVALON] Cameras at Wembley? > Sorry if this has already been mentioned, but at Wembley on Friday (22/6) > there was a notice at the entrance saying that the concert was being filmed > for TV/commercial purposes (the standard sort of wording about audience > consent to being filmed etc..). Heather you would remember. A genius. Wally Wood was great. He said that 99% av everything is rubbish, but the figure probably is higher for TV. It may have been about himself as two different people. I've always thought that song reflected his sadness about the passing of his father to whom the album is dedicated, not necesarily about the death, but about the way Ferry felt after it, contemplating his own mortality and trying to fathom his role in life (I'm a stranger in your town). But then it could be about sherbert dips! ;-) SimonG >>> "Heather M. (unless of I know there is a lot of disdain barely hidden on this list for Mr. Ferry's solo work, but as much as I am a fan of The First Five, I really really love the song "Boys and Girls." It's often weird to see lyrics typed out--I always "read" this part as You've got no sense of fun But you know I've won It's, as my friend Neill likes to point out a phonological ambiguity, and that colors my own hearing of the song. I think the woman--if it's a woman Ferry is singing about and not himself--is much more complex and interesting than just a painted coquette. I don't think the only, or even the natural, foil to the shy, decadent, vulnerable, dark persona Ferry presents in his music is a woman who lives only on the surface and only for pleasure (but not to say that the latter doesn't play a role). Because I always hear "one" as "won," and because "you're no fun" is often the natural response to someone who has been thwarted in some endeavor, and because I believe Mr. Ferry's sense of irony is alive and well, I've always thought of this lyric as rather darkly humorous, ironic, and languid. He's chiding her, but after his victory. And we know she's let him win. Then again, I happen to think the most, uh, satisfying seductions are ones which involve a (playful, to be sure) sense of mutual capitulation, so you should salt my interpretation to taste.
